Temporarily Closed Zulu for the place of calling, Ubizane Wildlife Reserve is situated a mere 4 Kilometers from Hluhluwe Town and is on the access road to Hluhluwe Umfolozi National Park. Ubizane Wildlife Reserve is an invaluable location for any tourist to experience wildlife while traveling in the surrounding area, including the Greater St Lucia World Heritage Site. Ubizane Wildlife Reserve is situated in the heart of Zululand, but is only a mere two and a half hours drive from Durban's King Shaka Airport. With an expanse of 1200 hectares, this privately owned, low risk Malaria reserve is teaming with wildlife, some of which include: Giraffe, Wildebeest, White Rhino, Ostrich and Zebra, as well as most antelope species. Not to mention the bird life which includes over 450 species! During the start of a brand new era, Ubizane renovations and restorations were undertaken on a large scale , with the emphasis on returning the glory that has stood for more than 50 years and improving with the resources that our advanced modern society has to offer.

We had some family come from the UK and decided to take them on a game viewing trip. We booked two self catering units at Ubizane for two night and found that these were extremely good. The rooms were spacious and the bathroom very clean and spacious. The kitchen was well stocked with cutlery, dishes and pots so you don't need anything from home. Oh, perhaps take a braai tong with you as our room did not have anything. Was quite funny turning everything on the braai with a egg spatula but it did the job.

It is a quick trip from Ubizane into Hluhuluwe game reserve. Our visitors enjoyed themselves tremendously. A trip to the nearby Leopard park/retreat is well worth it. You get up close to the animals and can get photos.

Spent our management team getaway here.
It was a great experience, and the staff and management are lovely people.
I hope to visit soon.
Best part was the walk to the rooms in the trees, and crossing paths with wildlife on the walkways.

stayed here for one night in the zululand tree lodge, food is amazing and staff very helpful. was welcomed with loads of animals at the entrance to reception then had a nice cold drink waiting for us. i would say no tv in room and to bring games or books we had nothing to do so we sat at the bar drinking all night.

The staff are unprofessional and seemingly untrained. Had a manager that thought he was our best friend and was very awkward.

Good location. But use outside facilities. And eat out. Definitely eat out.

We do not get the positive reviews. Everything is overpriced (2 times too expensive in comparison to other stays). All staff members are unfriendly. They have wildlife but everything is a management road and you are not allowed to drive on these roads. Why not? We have no clue.... The cottage is also too expensive in comparison to other places. Last but not least they do not organize activities or are able to bring you in contact with activity organizations. If you are looking for a places to stay more nights we would suggest to choose another place!

I have been coming to Ubizane Tree Lodge since I was about 4 and I really cherish my memories from this place. The staff are friendly and helpful, the rooms are very comfortable and luxurious, the food is delicious, and (above all) the setting is spectacular. A must stay for all visiting the Game Reserve. The only negative is that it is quite pricy. P.S: Hamilton is a fantastic guide who is very friendly and has superb knowledge of the bush. If you are going on a drive into the park, ask to speak with him first.

We stayed for 2 nights, I must admit the place was very pleasant, clean and safe, the staff were always helpful and the game ranger was really good, if I had any problems it would be directed towards the cuisine, it could have done with a touch of upgrading.
That said, the whole experience was very good and I would have absolutely no problem in recommending this place to others.

the good:
-we stayed at the Safari Lodge; very nice accomodation; wildlife like deer and warthog passing by your window!
-decent buffet
the less good:
-staff in the restaurant really too submissive sometimes
-terrible game driver Hamilton; was it the death of Mandela that offset him, i don't know but he drove like a maniac, never said a word during the drive; drove in circles numerous times while we could have explored more of Hluhluwe, and i can go on; almost drove a child from the street at speed of 90+; this guy has issues
-plenty of staff around but we were there for 3 days (full board) before anyone approached about how we were doing; not very customer oriented!

in summary; stay there but do a self drive in Hluhluwe if you have a 4x4; it's a much better experience

Loved our two night stay here - best place we have stayed during our two weeks here in South Africa. Tree lodge rooms were very comfortable, king bed with mosquito net, large deck on which to sit and watch the nyala, Impala and monkeys below. Plenty of storage space for clothes, fridge in room, air conditioning. WiFi only available in bar/restaurant area which was fine, although charging 150 Rand ($10) for 1 gig is a bit pricey. The first 500mb is free per person but that doesn't go far when uploading photos. Nice open sided restaurant and bar area overlooking a pond with crocodiles and Weaver birds, and we took the short walk to see the Ostrich. Food was good, especially breakfast with eggs cooked to order. We did two game drives with Alan who was very knowledgeable. The first drive was inside Ubizane's private reserve and the second was inside the main Hluwe-luwe park. Fortunately we saw a tip from a previous reviewer on wrapping up for the early morning drive along the main road from Ubizane to the Hluwe-luwe park entrance - definitely take warm hats and layers! We saw lots of game both days. Wish we could have spent longer here and had more game drives!

We did a guided walk with Alan. Alan was knowledgeable and showed us lots of interesting plants and told us about their customary uses. We got up close to a group of giraffes and gnus and zebras and impala and nyala and waterbuck. The fever tree forest shines.
