I don't usually write reviews but I wanted to share my experience. I shot into Durban for a business trip and found the Heron online.

I must say I was very pleasantly surprised. My friends kept telling me about all the really nice places in Florida Road to visit and The Heron is 2 minutes away from there so it was the perfect location for me. I ran my meetings during the morning and spent the afternoon by the pool. Durban is very hot and it is refreshing to take a dip and my room came with air con and all the usual stuff. In the evening I would pop out for supper in Florida Road and then back to my place. Joy was very accommodating and friendly. I felt quite at home and it turned out to be the perfect place to stay. Easy access to interesting places, lovely room, convenient location, swimming pool and aircon a must, internet and DSTV. Thanks folks for a really nice stay in a very hit Durban!

The caretaker of the property was great. Very personable and accommodating, as were the staff. Nothing was a problem for the caretaker, always willing to help, and have a laugh. The property is a lovely property, but it is obvious that maintenance work is needed.

The website photos are totally misleading - the actual experience is something totally different. Torn towels and sheets, filthy rooms, rickety steps and broken tables.... I am also reporting them to Satourism as their 4-star grading is a farce! We booked for 5 nights while attending the Tourism Indaba in Durban... booked out the next morning as I would rather sleep in my car than at the Heron. I have photos to prove my point which I will post on this site once I am back in my office.

The photo's on the website are very misleading. I met two couples who checked in expecting a 4 star guest house only to check right out again and find somewhere else.

Although staff were friendly and helpful, the room was musty and had a very unpleasant chemical smell. I had two cockroaches scuttling in the room. The bathroom towels were stained and frayed, the dstv boasts only the lowest bouquet, the chair leg was broken,no dustbin in the room and the worst was that the ceiling was so thin that it sounded like the person staying above me would fall through the roof any minute, and every time they walked around, it made my door rattle - it didn't help that they were up and about at 4am every morning.

I am a frequent traveller and work in the hospitality industry and my biggest problem with Heron is that it is most certainly should not be graded as a 4 star establishment.

I had selected this place based on pictures, reviews on the internet, and location - wanting something in Morningside/Berea with self-catering and internet for a business trip (I travel to South Africa for weeks several times a year). Sadly, the strong internet signal is the only thing that I can say anything positive about this place (which in South Africa is a rarity)! Joy is very nice and very accomodating, but the place is absolutely filthy. It smells musty, like cat pee, and the refrigerator had leftover food and food containers from previous guests when I arrived. The rooms have a fridge and kettle, but the kitchen is shared - it looks like the serveware and the cupboards haven't been used since the 1950s. Walls in the room had lovely spiderwebs and dust as well. I couldn't wait to get out of this place after one night.

Had a lovely time at the Heron Guesthouse. The manager/hostess, Joy was most helpful, friendly and welcoming. Lovely to chat too. The ensuite rooms, where I stayed upstairs are lovely (I believe there are rooms downstairs too), some have en-suite, jacuzzi style baths (stunning), great view over the city, delicious breakfast is served outside on the verandah by Joy and her team. The rooms upstairs are fully equipped for self-catering guests and there is a dining room area and lounge with TV for those who would rather stay in and relax. There is a computer with interenet for those busy exec's who can't stop working. Clean, fluffy, soft towels.Clean crisp linen, fully serviced rooms. What more can a girl ask for when looking for a relaxing get away or a business trip? Want somewhere simple, unfussy and comfortable to stay in - definitely recommend it. Oh, and there is a lovely pool to laze around on those hot, humid days. Great place, great ambience!

Hi

I am a visitor to this country! Surely they should roll out the red carpet when u arrive. Only to say that we booked out after 2 nights - a TERRIBLE experience (4 star rated BAD experience).

Arrived and told to pay up-front. The rooms walls are peeling, towels are bleached, not sheets, smelly mould on the ceiling, dust in bath, kitchen advertised NOT available or microwave, no phones in rooms, not phone available at reception for guest, pool filthy, no table/desk for executive to work, plasma tv noisy at night, cannot park your car in the space provided, hostess is argumentitive and no help what-so-ever. When we decided to book out as a result of this bad smell - we were told that we would loose 25% of our payment. If this is an South African experience then I rather stay at home. Pathetic and you get charged R500/night.

I cannot believe that we when you complain - thet attitude that you get from this woman. We enquire about the mouldy smell in the room and she only argue that no-one else has complained. I cannot believe that they have a four star rating.

DON"T STAY here you WILL waste your money and NOT enjoy a DURBAN experience.
