5. Our room was at 5th floor, the floor carpet was dirty with visible and a fowl smell
6. The curtain of the window on the corridor was so dirty that we couldn't even make out the original color
7. The orange couch there had visible stains, no one could sit on it
8. The furniture in the room had visible dust
9. The beds were very comfortable
10. The room was a 3 sleeper, but only 2 cups and 2 bath towels were in the room
11. On the day of our checkout, we requested a toilet paper roll at 7 am and we never received it till we left. And no one apologized for it

I had much more expectations from this hotel by looking at rooms. But it was not the case at all..

1. There were many cracks on tub bath.
2. Phone inside the room was not working at all. U need to go to reception if you need anything.
3. Few things were missing already ( Towels , soap etc. ) when we entered into the room and had to call and asked them which they delivered later on.
4. Out of 2 lifts , only 1 lift was working , and it was terrible. First of all we need to press button minimum 7-8 times then it will take you up to the correct floor. While going up , It was noisy and will give you horrible experience.
5. No parking.
6. No knobs or remote to control the A.C.
7. Staff was not friendly.
8. There are lot of other things which I don't remember right now. Sorry!!

If you still want to book this accommodation , Best of Luck !!

My husband and I had to go to Durban for professional reasons and were looking for a good but affordable accommodation. Albany Hotel is truly one of the cheapest hotels you can find in Durban. We paid 250 rand per person per night for a double room which includes a breakfast buffet. A few words of warning though...

If you check out the website (www.albanyhotel.co.za), you will see that the hotel is rated as a 3-star hotel. I'm not exactly sure why, but I feel like the hotel is more of a 2-star hotel. The lobby is quite small and dark. The same goes for the restaurant on the first floor where we eat our breakfast. The carpeting on all the floors of the building are outdated, looks like they've been there since the 1950's. The same carpeting is also in the room, which doesn't really help in making the hotel look modern. The room that we got was a little small, but I think it was because they added a small bed next to the double bed that was already there. The airconditioning wasn't functioning properly... we couldn't adjust the temperature and it wasn't as cold as we wanted it to be.

Also, the hotel is located in a noisy part of Durban. To be exact, the hotel is located at the corner of Smith Street and Albany Grove in the middle of the city center (the Durban City Hall is right across the hotel). Smith Street is very busy and congested during the day. While Albany Grove is a bit dodgy, especially at night, because of all the clubs and bars located in that area. We were lucky that we got a room on the Smith Street side... otherwise, we would have had to put up with all the noise from those establishments. It was also a good thing that the humming of the airconditioner drowned out the noise from outside.

Another thing to contend with is the lack of parking in the area. Unfortunately, Durban City is a bit like New York City. There just aren't a lot of good parking around. We had to pay 50 rand/day for parking at an adjacent building.

Despite all those unappealing things that I mentioned, the hotel staff were actually very friendly and helpful. Also, our room and the bathroom were both very clean... which is very important to me, because I'm quite OC about cleanliness (especially in the bathroom). The breakfast buffet was also very appetizing and well worth the money. We ordered room service for dinner a couple of times and were quite surprised about the size of the servings. I had a big beef burger with chips and veggies for only 50 rand. The beverages are a bit expensive though, so I suggest you buy your drinks from outside. Also, the room does not come with a fridge, so if you want a cold drink, you're gonna have to order ice cubes from downstairs or buy your drinks from a vending machine on the first floor.

In a nutshell, although my husband and I were disappointed in some aspects of the hotel (especially after seeing some of the pictures online), we thought that 250 rand was a pretty good price in that area. Most hotels in that area and along the beach cost almost 400 rand per person.

If you're in Durban for strictly business or on a tight budget and not really thinking of a romantic getaway, Albany Hotel is sufficient. If I were to go to Durban again and were still in a tight budget, I would definitely still reconsider staying at Albany Hotel. But if I have more money to spare or looking for a more pleasurable, classy experience, then this place will not be on the top of my list.

Firstly the lady that was on the reception on the 29th September is very rude and racist, I came on the 29th and checked in when I went to the room there was no toilet paper and towels, I went to the reception and told her, she promised to sort it out but nothing was done I went back and approached her she told me to speak to the manager.

The room was dirty and scary hence I paid fully but they reception seemed not to be care. The remotes for air conditioning and TV was not in the room they told me I'll use manual. I went and inform them the air conditioning is not working nothing was done, I waited for the them to atleast bring toilet papers, guess what nobody can. The way I was so disappointed and un attended, I even decided to check out same day and look for another place hence I paid for Albany room and the was no refund paid to me hence no attention was given to me whenever I'm shouting for help.

The floor has got a carpet with a very bad smell.

I Will never ever book to this place, they only have good building outside, come inside you will see, and moreover racist receptionist.

I found this hotel on Trip.com I needed a family room and made a last minute booking. The pictures on Trip.com were nothing like the hotel. It's in the down town area and in the middle of the 'red light zone.' Which isn't suitable for me especially since I had my elderly mother and 7 year old daughter. The rooms smelled stale and there was insufficient towels. We arrived late and went to sleep. In the morning when we went to reception we saw people asleep in the waiting areas and strewn in corridors. The housekeeping staff didn't appear to have bras on as it was hot and we saw several of their cleavages showing between the buttons. Quite unprofessional and an altogether 'seedy' vibe. I paid 311 Australian dollars for two nights for the family room. I left after the first night there was no way I could have spent a second night knowing what I knew about this place. Terrible experience really

Be very careful when looking at the photos and description of this hotel online: one of the worst hotels that exist. Small and dirty bathroom, not enough towels for entire family, dirty carpets, curtains falling off rails, stained furniture, no remote for TV, NO PARKING, situated above 2 very dodgy and noisy bars. We had to stay as we paid, but we couldnt leave early enough the next day. Cheap price on booking.com- and now we understand why. Horrible place.

First of all the area is extremely dangerous! A robbery took place just outside the hotel as we entered. The carpets are absolutely disgusting and has a bad odor. Lifts are sticky and dirty. Bathroom is disgusting. There was dirt, including hair stuck on on rim of the toilet bowl. Towels were stained. I highly doubt the bedding gets washed often since it had a bad smell and stains all over the pillows, including human hair. The room had a bad odor. Bathroom floor gets really wet while showering as the glass door is placed on the wrong side! No mat provided in the bathroom. The hotel is very noisy. We woke up to what sounded like drilling and breaking of glass outside our hotel room. Unfortunately we had to spend the night there as we arrived later than expected and were lucky to get a booking into another hotel the next day. It was a total nightmare and waste of time and money.

Dangerous and crime riddled area
Loud music
No service
No towels
Dirty
Smells

This is the worst hotel we have stayed in during all our travels...
No parking at hotel you are told to go down a seedy drug filled alley which houses a club that is full of unsavoury characters... The club has music playing throughout the night with loud voices, breaking glass... Can't get a decent nights sleep.. Then you have a "curfew" as the parking closes at 11pm...
You can't get any towels.. You book for 4 people and get 2 towels... Pathetic...
Everyone who was booking in was in a state of shock at the hotel and we will definitely not be coming anywhere near this hotel again...
Such a shame booking.com has them on their website.
Staff just don't care and cleaning staff even less...

The pictures on the website are deceiving. There is an extremely noisy notorious tavern downstairs next to the hotel with drunk people in the alley on the way to the car park which is situated 200m away. The car park facilities cost an extra R50.00 and we were told that you cannot leave after 11 pm as we would be parked out and let back in at 5 am. There are prostitutes hanging around downstairs outside the reception area with the smell of marijuana lingering in the air. Although under renovation, the reception looked scruffy like a cheap motel. The elevators did not work properly either. The rooms smell musty and the bathroom is small and looked dirty. The only thing good was the 32" plasma tv mounted on the wall. Paid R400.00 deposit and balance on arrival but once we had a look at the room, we left. It was an awful experience as we then had to find accommodation at 9pm after a long trip.
