It was my first time at this particular City Lodge Hotel. I think it is well located for business travellers who frequent conferences and need to be located not too far from the ICC, the beach and basic amenities. The staff was very friendly and you got a greeting with a smile whenever you passed any personnel in uniform. That's great. The breakfast waiting time was a nightmare though. I was there for 4 nights and breakfast each morning meant waiting in a queue (in a packed hotel restaurant) to get your eggs. One service personnel taking orders and walking back to scramble or fry your eggs - don't even mention the omelette orders. At one point, it wasn't worth it - I just grabbed a fruit and walked away. Lastly, I could hear the other two rooms next to mine CLEARLY. The song proofing is terrible. I could hear someone walk about, flush the toilet and have a conversation on the phone while I hear each word perfectly clear.…
After many years of staying at another hotel group, I once again returned to the City Lodge Group. Our stay at the City Lodge Durban was a very pleasant one. The road network around the hotel made it easy to get to our various destinations. The ease of getting there from Johannesburg and back was a definitely plus. Proximity to uShaka Marine World, Gateway Shopping Mall and Marine Parade was a definite advantage.
Fridge, fridge and fridge is a must in such hotel group. I have stayed for 3 night without a fridge that's a turn off. I can't rely on the ice cubes from the bar, where would I store my left overs being food or drinks. I am so disappointed to be honest. I regard Road Lodge as lower grade from CITY LODGES within the group so it means mustn't think of booking there since City Lodges can't afford just a bar fridge.
I like City Lodge Hotels. They all tend to be of a certain standard and you know what you are getting with this brand. With this in mind, I booked a 5 night stay in Durban. The property is well located for the CBD and Golden Mile and is generally safe. It is clean and the rooms are comfortable; however, silly issues emerged during my stay. Hot water failed on the Saturday morning, ok these things can happen, but they really should not. Front of house staff appeared disinterested. More seriously the telephones had been removed from the bedrooms. When I queried this I was given the comical reply “Covid protocols”. With respect, this is nonsense. Having stayed in City Lodge Hotels all over South Africa during the pandemic I can say that Durban was the first location in which phones had been removed to “protect” guests from a virus. It was ridiculous and, bluntly, a safety issue. Further, it is not consistent with the City Lodge brand offer. Otherwise, this was a decent property suitable as a Durban base for a few nights.…
