You pay for a 3 star hotel but you get more. The staff were very friendly and make you feel welcome. Our hotel room had wonderful views of the see which was great to wake up to in the morning. The bed was comfortable, the television had DSTV (Satellite) and the bathroom was quite large. Breakfast was substantial and the hotel was VERY clean. The only thing I could complain about which makes them lose a star was the fact that we were approached by a time share sales woman who took up a lot of our holiday time, but that was only about an hour and we were out on the beach which is incredibly close to the hotel, literally across the road. All in all it was a lovely weekend and I would suggest staying at the hotel if you intend on spending more money enjoying yourself than on a bed!

I stayed at the Beach Hotel for two nights in June 2006. I'd made my decision based on the positive reviews the hotel has gotten on here, but I thought it was horrid. The carpet was stained, the door lock flimsy, and the bathroom dirty. They had problems with the telephone system, and I couldn't make any outgoing calls the whole time I was there. The food at breakfast was ok, but the service was terrible. A swarm of waitresses circled around me, constantly asking if I was finished with my bowl while I still had cereal in it and a spoon in my hand.

The area is also quite rough. Durban in general is a dangerous place, but as a woman travelling alone I didn't feel safe walking on the street, even in broad daylight. I've travelled in Africa quite a bit, so I wasn't expecting it to be Disneyland, but I was clearly a mark as soon as I came out of the hotel doors. A crew of young pickpocketers slept on the sidewalk in front of the hotel. I'd avoid this area and stay elsewhere. The Hilton is much nicer and safer, though more expensive.

Nice position on the seafront, good breakfast with quite an ample choice, friendly and helpful staff, spacious rooms, very affordable. The down side is that the rooms are very basic, would need quite a lot of maintenance and most important, not very clean. The towels and sheets we were given were dirty, bed cover also had seen better days....

We were charged more than quote, but we had to pay as we are from Cape Town and didn't have other accomodation. We had to pay extra for parking; was so bad you can hardly reverse in the parking area (in the basement). When we arrived back the evening, our paid, allocated parking bay was taken. When we queried this, we were told to look for other parking (which was not available). Breakfast : we'd had to wait 2hrs to be seated, so we had breakfast else. Beddding was filthy, my kids had to sleep on our bed as their beds reaked of urine. The carpets were dirty, aircon out of order, as well as the elevator..we couldn't wait to leave. I can't believe how this organisation was passed to operate as a hotel - filthy, delapitated...

The hotel staff was unfriendly especially the porters. The area is very unsafe, very dodge characters around- you couldn't just walk accross the road to the beach.
The bathroom was in a terrible state! White shower curtains were turning cream and had stains on it. The bedroom had a strong damp smell and bedding had a lot of fluffs which irritated my skin. Overall experience was just BAD!! I would not recommend this place to anyone!

The best example of just how bad this is, was the hotel manager telling us that they were not really interested in what we thought, as their target market is school kids visiting Durban. The place is really, really dirty. The bathrooms are unclean, there were cigarette stubs everywhere, kids running up and down stars and corridors, the lifts were out of order so we had to carry cases up 6 floors. The staff don't care at all. I am gong to request that ebookers remove from their listing as I would not want anybody else to be subjected to this hellhole. It is cheap, but rather stay at the Holiday Inn Express!!!

Please don't even consider staying here! The SMELL was horrifying. Grime can hide from the eyes but not from the nose!!!

The area is dodgy and rundown. Not safe to walk around at all. The pavements outside were crawling with crowds of howling people.

The hotel is badly run down and needs a major overhaul. In fact to get rid of that smell it would probably need to be completely gutted.

Once we were in our room we managed to make alternative accommodation plans and THANKFULLY got out of there within fifteen minuets!

What a huge disappointment with this so called hotel 1. They don't vacuum the the rooms when you're staying there 2. The windows in the rooms not clean at all u can't even see the beach nicely due to the dirt on the windows 3 they don't clean the toilets showers whilst you're staying there 4.there is this awful smell in the rooms yet alone when you enter into the hotel 5. Oh my the linen is just so dirty yet they claim there is housekeeping luckily when I travel I bring my own linen so I was safe 6. The curtains so dirty they were last washed I think 6 months ago 7.what type of a hotel that doesn't have a bar fridge 8.no parking for your cars not safe at all 9.its all dusty all over the room. And yet alone you do false advertising about this hotel no man put your act together and do something or just close it down.

Decor dated, breakfast buffet the worst ever. Sausages sour, no imagination. Same menu as 3 years ago to the dot. Salads prepared too long in advance. On arrival taking a shower, the water outlet fell of. NO parking. Windows so dirty you cant see through. Pity. It could be a great hotel agin. No interest from owner or personel. During breakfast, personell would gossip about you in their language. HALLO its the new South africa. Some of us DO understand your language. I felt pity for the foreigners staying there. That is their view of RSA

a recent stay at beach hotel,(durban) made me wonder how hotels get a 3 star rating. firstly the beds in my room had bricks supporting them (have pictures taken) and secondly incompetent staff. i had booked my stay including breakfast, and was humiliated at the dining room, in front of other guests and friends, when i was told that i had not paid for breakfast. when i went to reception to check what was going on, i was told that it was some one else`s mistake. no apology!!! i mailed the gm at the hotel, an till date, NO REPLY
