We arrived to Durban after spending a week in Cape Town and that was probably the reason why we did not enjoy our city experience as much as we could - we compared everything with CT.

So the hotel room we paid for aproximately the same price as we did for two level apartments in Cape Town was pretty basic with several noticable disadvantages.

To be fair I'll start with pointing out the perfect location - only few minutes away from the beach and the promenade. The area itself is calm and safe which is very important cuality in Durban.

The hotel and the room were not in the best shape. They were not bad, but more like a bit "tired". The room was rather big and concised of bedroom with dicent bed and spacious wardrob. There were another closet in the living room and huge sofa in fromt of TV screen.

What was disapointnig is lack of coziness. Kitchen kit did not have some pannels and even some floor tiles. Dirty windows did not bring additinal charm. And the noisy parties with loud local music around the pool were annoying.

The staff was polite, but I had a feeling they had always been some kind of uncertain how to comunicate with us. May be because they do not have many tourisits from Europe.

Booked 2 rooms. The reception only managed to pick up 1 booking on their site. After much delay, confusion and frustration they managed to trace the second room. Caused great inconvenience to us. I travel a lot and for the first time had to pay such high fees for parking on the premises. First impressions last and mine was definietly not the best

We had booked a room for 6 people as it was one of my friends birthday. When we got there to check in we had a problem at the reception as they were confused as to which room or rather unit we were supposed to go to but that matter got solved very quickly. When we got to the unit it was what they had advertised on the booking website but there was only 3 beds and there was 6 of us. We had to ask for an extra bed. There was no TV and no wifi(it was not working at all) . We were so disappointed as we had paid full amount to stay there for the weekend. What was worst than all was getting complaints that we mustn't talk as we are below the manager and surrounding permanent residents and they cannot stand our voices. We're weren't that loud because they said we can play music and stuff but we did not book to go and stare at each other we booked to celebrate our friends birthday not to get threatened to pack our things and go in the evening after 6 like we were going to be refunded. If they don't want noise then that building should stop bookings. Especially unit 24 as it is below the manager I advise that people avoid it as they won't hear the end of it. The stay was terrible as we were limited and went above our budget as when it gets dark we need to go out as we can't have fun in the apartment. The only good thing is that the stores are a walking distance such as spar and it is also a walkable distance to the beach.

Stayed here for a week as part of my RCI timeshare. We wanted to book a place in Ballito or Umhlanga, but as they were full we were given this place instead. Its located on the north beach, near the ice rink. The location is good, very central to everything. There is a Spar nearby, the beaches are only a short walk away. That's where the good things end.

When we got to the property, the gate was locked. We were told to park our car on the street and pay R25 a night for parking, even though my reservation clearly said "complimentary on site parking included". Apparently the management didn't understand this or care. It was not undercover parking either.

The rooms have been refurbished, but this doesn't hide the rats and the cockroaches. We saw 2 rats and several cockroaches running around the bathroom. When we called reception to address this issue, we were told this is normal and nothing can be done and we need to close the bathroom doors.

Next issue, the stove wasn't working, called management again. This time they sent someone up to the room to sort it out, and after fiddling with the stove for a few minutes he told us the whole thing needs to be taken apart to be fixed. We left him to do the work and went out. When we got back that evening, the stove was fixed, finally.

The accommodation itself is good but could be managed a lot better. It seems as though they rent out the apartments to people on a long term-lease, so they don't really care about people like us who only stay for a short while.

We had a great time in Durban, but I won't be staying at the Oceanic the next time.

This is my second visit to Don Oceanic and I reconfirm that their ordinary service and pot attitude makes you feel sad. I was given a parking bay but each day some other car was parked there. Every time I came back to hotel, same drama, same nonsense. For the first time in my life I was charged for late check out. What a shame. Lodged a complain but expect very little. Location is good and the hotel has good options but need to change their customer service approach.

I will start with the only positives - our room was reasonably sized, and we had a TV with DSTV. But its downhill from there...

The location leaves a lot to be desired due to the park engrossed with unnecessary sounds and people throughout the night and day. Nestled in a district of rubble and somewhat rundown shops the area attracts the sort of people that you would cross the street to avoid. The room not containing an oven has been a major inconvenience as it was not stipulated. We had wi-fi issues for the first three days staying at The Oceanic, our air conditioner failed to provide its' service even after we continuously requested it to be fixed. We also did not have a bath plug available when requested, a tropical ocean view was stipulated and we stared right into a set of buildings the entire time. The furniture was dirty and not looked after and there were several items from previous guests under our bed. The main bathroom is also filled with moisture because of the two windows leading into the center of the building, thus our view being a concrete wall and the above guests sewerage drippings reaching our bathroom. The worst while staying at The Oceanic was the need to pay additional costs for our car to be parked in the provided secured parking and because it was so expensive we had to park our car on the curb outside the hotel and therefore our back window was busted out with a rock by an unknown individual. Our stay was only pleasurable due to our own doing.

Our check in was delayed as the front desk informed us that they didn't receive the Bookings.com confirmation of the room number, which we believe shouldn't be the guests issue. We were given a room that was neat, yet a water leak was reported which we were told we were to receive a new room in the morning after sorting out the Bookings.com issue, which never happened (neither the move nor the leak fixed). We found cockroaches in our room over the few days we stayed there, which was unfortunate as the room seemed very neat, yet needs to be attended to.
We enjoyed the meals at the Oceanic and the location next to the ice rink was perfect. The manager Ian was very sympathetic and friendly yet did not attend to our grievances. We checked out one day earlier than paid for without compensation. For the four days we were there the coffee used on the first day in the apartment was also never replenished.

'Good day Elmarie Thank you for your truly constructive criticism, and offering me the opportunity to respond to this matter. We would like to apologise for all the inconvenience caused. We have been in contact with Booking.com. and have rectified and improved our communication with them, so hopefully this unfortunate incident will not happen again. In our desparate attempts to move you to another unit we failed, as unfortunately we were fully booked and would like to profusely apologise to you for that. Sadly our maintenance team could not repair the leak on the same day as the plumber advised that the room needed to be blocked for 4 days to sort out the problem. You did mention that our location is the best and our service is also excellent, thank you, Thank you, also, for meeting with me, I am so sorry that we did not fulfil your expectations, but would love to welcome you you back to restore your faith in our resort. Kind regards, Ian Moyo General Manager - Oceanic
