Spent just one night there a week ago; wished I had stayed longer. Charming hotel, lovely old building, helpful staff and superb fish meal (Dorado). I would happily go back there again; its a great place!

A lovely boutique hotel. Beautifully decorated and excellent service throughout our stay. After a very long flight we asked if we could eat in the hotel. Menus were brought to our room and the upstairs sitting room ( also immaculately decorated) was set up for a very personalised dinner for the 2 of us. The staff were friendly, helpful, informative...

Dear Sue and Dave, it was such a pleasure to show the REAL Durban to you. It certainly seems like your entire KZN trip was too short and my staff and I will be delighted to help you plan your next trip to again include some hidden gems for you to enjoy. We look forward to welcoming you back. Meleney

If I had actually stayed here I may have felt differently! I was in Durban for Tourism Indaba and had booked for 4 nights but was told, on arrival, that unfortunately they were fully booked for 3 of the nights and that they could only accommodate me for 1 night. They then offered me a room right next to reception...

Dear Mr. Newton, Thank you for bringing the matter to my attention. I've reviewed correspondence and noted that we replied both to yourself and the booking agent but it is clear that the message that we had been fully booked for at the time of your enquiry did not get through to you timeously. We are sorry that we could...

Beautifully appointed hotel close to all amenities in the Durban City Centre. Warm friendly staff welcomed us and our room was beautifully appointed and the peaceful setting and luxury fittings all made for a really wonderful stay.

This is a lovely guest house with superior fixtures and fittings, very nicely decorated with willing and friendly staff. However, during our stay it lacked the finesse of what I classify a boutique hotel to be. Little things like the hair dryer in the room not fitting any plug socket in the hotel, no shelf or light above the sink...

This was our first visit to South Africa and we wanted a quiet place in Durban for a night before our Safari at a nearby lodge. We wanted to find a hotel near the water, but now that I have visited the HUGE city of Durban, I know that the hotels "on the water" are actually across the street behind...

Everything about this small hotel was delightful. The staff were amazing, the rooms newly decorated and stylish and the area safe and secure. I will definitely stay again when in Durban. Staying there was a real "feel good " experience.....

It was my first visit to South Africa for a official reason but I wanted to get the taste of the country too. What better way but to stay away from typical high-rise hotels that you will find everywhere. At Saint James the surroundings are so serene and the decor is so tastefully done that you immediately feel at home....

What a pleasure to stay at the St. James. The room was tastefully decorated and very comfortable (the bed was a dream) and my husband appreciated the free wifi connection so he could work. The staff was very friendly and most helpful. We definitely will return.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Originally the home of Corobrick founder Robert Storm who built it in 1892, the guesthouse is steeped in Durban history and retains much of its old world charm. The 15 bedrooms are individually decorated in a classically elegant style with some having a view over the century's old St James church while others look over the hotel's peaceful garden patio. Being close to the trendy eateries of Florida Road, Durban's beachfront, major sports stadiums (Kings Park and Moses Mabhida Football Stadium), golf courses and Jameson and Mitchell Parks means all Durban's attractions are just a short drive away. The guesthouse is ideal for small meetings, conferences and private dinners and is well equipped to ensure business runs smoothly and efficiently. For business guests, the guesthouse is well-placed for access to the ICC, as well as quick freeway access to the Umhlanga Ridge precinct. ... more   less
