I booked The Concierge because I wanted to be near Florida Road, and because of the positive online reviews. At R945 per night without breakfast, it wasn't cheap but it wasn't bad value for a 4*-rated place in Durban. I was mistaken. The hotel is located opposite an overgrown, abandoned playground which, when we arrived, sported a group of desultory youths smoking marijuana. The gates to the hotel's litter-strewn carpark were wide open, with no security in site. I was immediately on edge. You certainly can't safely walk from the hotel to Florida Road, and there is literally no barrier/security between you and the street with the gate standing wide open. We were met by Mohammed, the affable and well-presented duty manager. He was friendly and escorted us to our room over a crumbling wooden walkway in bad need of repair. The first thing that hit me in the room was the musty smell. The second was the sight of the filthy, beige-but-may-have-once-been-yellow rug and the tatty, threadbare and stained armchair. The final straw was the coffee station, which still bore sticky traces of the previous occupants, confirming that housekeeping had barely made a pass at the room before we checked in, and suggesting that any hope of clean sheets was woefully optimistic. We decided to leave and stay elsewhere. Mohammed was professional about this and apologetic. He offered to move us to a sister-hotel in Musgrave, but we needed to be in the general area of Florida Road, so declined. He then offered to refund us, conceding that our complaints (security, cleanliness etc) had merit. We accepted the refund and left through the haze of dagga smoke emanating from a small group at the gate, which was still wide open and unsecured. We were glad to go. Rechecking the booking review site, I realised that all the positive reviews for this hotel were pre-Covid. It may have once been decent and worthy of the praise it received, but it certainly isn't somewhere I'd recommend now! Steer well clear - for the same money or less there are much nicer places in the area.

I went there for a couple of days and spent a whole week. Very comfortable and quiet, big rooms and nice environment. There is a cafe where you can have nice breakfast and lunch and people is really helpful. Special thanks to Abdul, Shakira, Vincent and all the staff in the Freedom café as well as room service. As a European, I would say maybe the neighborhood is not the best one, but I think insecurity is common all around Durban. Still, I felt this hotel like an oasis where you can rest. I would return without a doubt.

The Concierge is a little boutique hotel in Durban's Berea neighborhood, a few blocks off of Florida Road's restaurants and shops. While Durban streets can feel tense these days, Florida Road is safe, and ubering to and from the Concierge is completely safe. The hotel is brilliantly designed and laid out. Rooms are just lovely. Free wifi throughout. Tip: the courtyard-facing rooms are larger. We had the street-facing rooms because our family preferred an adjoining patio and they were completely comfortable too, however. Decor is lovely. We heard they are about to update which didn't need necessary given how appealing it is now. Staff are present and ready to help around the clock. Small number of rooms means exceptional service. The folks who run the hotel could work in any hotel in the world -- incredibly professional, helpful, fun to talk with, knowledgeable, warm and welcoming. The hotel is arranged around the Freedom Cafe, referred separately -- vegetarian, great food, beer and wine, open for breakfast and lunch, and dinner with special advance arrangements for hotel guests. The Cafe owners and staff are not hotel employees but seamlessly coordinate with The Concierge to make for a complete stay experience. The courtyard is leafy and shaded under a huge tree. The whole atmosphere is stylish, low-key, interesting, urbane, and delightful. I won't stay anywhere else when I return to Durban. My colleagues stayed at the Hilton downtown and had a completely different and much less delightful time while we were in town. Would not recommend walking to Florida Road based on staff advice but it's a $3 uber ride away. I was so glad to have gone off the beaten track and found this place! If they are booked they have two sister hotel properties in Durban as well--just call or email for information. Love this place.

Beautiful rooms with very secured parking past 2 gates. Staff were nice. But, 3 main problems 1. WiFi wasn't working through entire 2 nights there. Showed the staff that it wouldn't connect on all of my 4 devices. Staff said their provider said all is ok but it did not solve my problem. Offered me to use the lobby WiFi, but the lobby is not sheltered from the rooms and it was raining constantly. Had to purchase a data bundle at my own cost to ensure I had Internet coverage in the rooms. 2. TV wasn't working on the first night. Had to ask staff to reset. 3. Safe deposit box was not working all 2 nights. Staff said nothing they can do but put it with their lobby safe. Overall nice place let down by 3 key points.

We are in our mid 50s and really enjoyed our stay here. It is unusual but delightful. Our car was within the courtyard and we decided to walk or use Uber. We walked to the Florida Road restaurants twice and ate nearby the first night. I don’t know about other areas but we found it fine. We also walked to the Botanic Gardens taking in a bit of Gold Cup race day en route. Our breakfast wasn’t included but we were delighted with Freedom Cafe in the courtyard where the Smoked salmon Benedict was super
