Quarters on Avondale is a newer, sister hotel to Quarters on Florida, which is a short walk away. The two hotels are very similar -- but just be aware there are two with the same name, to avoid any confusion.
The hotel consists of some renovated traditional Durban residences (which means large covered verandahs to let in the breeze but keep out the sun). The renovation is very tastefully done, with soft cream tones throughout and comfortable furnishings in the rooms. The bathrooms are first class. The location is excellent, close to the Florida Rd area with its restaurants, bars, and entertainments. There is secure parking for guest vehicles. The hotel restaurant, named Jam, is absolutely first rate and I recommend it highly. The staff are friendly and helpful.
If you book, it may pay to try various hotel booking sites in addition to the hotel's own sites. I found huge variation in the prices quoted for the same room, with the price on the hotel site significantly higher than I was able to obtain elsewhere.
Overall, this is a really superb property and an excellent place to stay in Durban.

I booked this hotel since my favorite in the city was fully booked and upon arrival was adamantly told I had booked at their sister hotel in Florida even after I showed the receptionist my booking confirmation she argued that the lady booked me into the hotel in Florida, then only to be told she has to check the rates and see if there is availability, later to find out that there were just two guest that night . Adhere to what I wondered my booking confirmation that was prepaid or her insistence that that piece of paper didn't matter a bit. Eventually after showing her the distinct print out with my finger as if teaching a first time child to read she finally got it and checked me in to my room. No apologies. The room is well decorated but the carpets were dirty in places and the "balcony" or whatever it's meant to be was dusty and full of bird feathers and droppings" , no soap or lotion or shampoo in the bathroom after asking housekeeping which took a whole while to respond they brought all the requested items. No turndown service and the room and bed were small. Breakfast was decent to get you going but nothing to shout about. Check out procedure was reasonably smooth but no thank you or smile. No wifi and the free computer provided for guest was slow and the printer didn't work. All I can say is bad management. Noisy in the mornings, the hotel is reasonably priced but can do with better management structures. I would give it a pass.

This was my second stay at this hotel. I found the hotel to be neat and attractive. It is well situated, away from the city centre, but with easy access to beach, Moses Mabida and ABSA Stadiums. Florida Road with its wide choice of restaurants.

We had a great room after moving twice - once because they didn't read the reservation for twin beds and once for noise - ask to be in the out building. Joel in restaurant was awesome. Cynthia at the desk was less than helpful - no map, no help with tours, no one extra hour for checkout and attitude.

Very nice place to stay. Comfy and cozy. Staff very friendly and helpful. Shops and restaurants close by. Not to far from Durban's main beaches. Good breakfast as well. I would recommend this hotel any time.

Recently spent a couple of nights at the Quarters Hotel on Avondale Road, an intimate place to stay off the beaten track, well appointed, clean and great staff. Breakfasts were great. In close walking proximity to Florida Road night life. Well worth a stay.

We stayed here one night after an overnight flight from the UK. The hotel is well located near the stadium, city centre and restaurants of Florida Road (a 2 minute drive) and easy to find, even after a long flight!
The staff were very friendly and arranged a visit to the Sky Car for my mum's birthday which was a lovely surprise and got our trip off to a good start.
The rooms are comfortable with a lovely big bathroom. However the wifi didn't work and the TV had only 2 stations, which wasn't an issue as were really only there to sleep. We were also next to the road which was noisy at night as were the pigeons on the roof. The room was showing a little wear and tear but clean.
The restaurant was closed during our stay, but the breakfast was very good and in a lovely building, a shame the hotel don't make the most of it.
Overall the staff and location make this a good place good for a stopover.

Room Tip: Try not to get a room at the back as the road can be noisy.

I really enjoyed my stay at this boutique hotel in Durban. It is well located on the Berea - close to the highway to the airport and close to the north beaches. The hotel and the rooms are tastefully decorated and the room was very comfortable. Unfortunately the restaurant was closed and arriving late from the airport this was a bit inconvenient. However, I was able to have dinner at the sister hotel - Quarters Florida Road - which was not far away. My only gripe relates to the allocation of the room. The hotel was quiet when I was there and I was allocated a room furtherest from the amenities, restaurant etc. I would expect that if a hotel is empty you would give the 3 guests you have the nicest rooms available?

Stayed for two nights and found the staff extremely friendly and helpful.
I've stayed in other small hotels in Durban and found the Quarters to have a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere. Very quiet setting even though its in a very busy part of Durban.

I look forward to staying here again.

My fave Durban hotel (either this one or Quarters Florida Road). Love the smell. The decor. The location. The opulence. The service. The size of rooms and bathrooms. The linen. The baroque decor.

Avondale's restaurant was pretty appalling (no wonder I was the only one there) and the carpets in the hotel need a damn good clean. It would be great to have somewhere (a shelf? Table? Anything?) to put stuff on in the bathroom.

Otherwise it's just great. Love my sleep overs here!
