Epitomizing the legacy and endurance of what has become known as the grand dame of the Vaal is the progressive reinvention of present day needs and client experiences. The site where the Riviera on Vaal Resort is situated today was initially built as a kiosk to service pleasure seeker to the river who were popping down for a swim, boat ride or picnic on the banks. American film maker, entrepreneur and developer, Isadore William Schlesinger, fell in love with the area and built a pristine hotel and the doors to the hotel were first opened on 29 August 1936. Sunday dinner and a movie became a hit as South Africans did not have the privilege of television until 1976, the Riviera on Vaal hotel was the place to be and be seen. The hotel, survived the devastating floods of early 1975, when most of the low-lying areas of Vereeniging were completely submerged in water, including most of the hotel grounds and the entire adjacent golf course. Used to be a great hotel and well managed, but it is definitely in need of upgrade in facilities as well as management. Extremely expensive for what you get. If what you paid for was all included it would be great, but everything is extra. We rented the conference room for half a day and had to pay extra for coffee and tea service, for projector, for 10 minutes after use exit even though the doors were open and we were standing outside. Not a good place to have a conference and everything is marked up by 100%. You can see it used to be a great facility but it isn't anymore, even the safes in the rooms are not fixed to the wall or working.

I stayed in the Garden suite...I think I would have preferred to stay in a standard room. Carpets and curtains were stained, bathroom was in a bad shape, tv didn't work properly, couldn't phone reception as you couldn't dial out. Dinner wasn't too bad but breakfast was below average and felt like it had been cooked the night before in bulk and served to the guests the next morning, bland and tasteless.

Front desk and support staff were very welcoming and generally friendly. The pool area was also amazing.

However the hotel has not been modernised. WiFi was not working, aircon very old. In the kitchen: no green tea, no bananas, no chilies, no health bread etc. They basically have glorified chefs who clearly don't know that they are there for the customers. We were also served pineapples that were off! The bathrooms are way too small.

The boat ride was a good experience that left a good taste in my mouth something that the kitchen couldn't really achieve.

I wouldn't go back until the place has been upgraded and the kitchen service has been improved. Only if the owners could see the amazing potential of that place!

We had a fantastic romantic weekend away me and my girlfriend, Check in was fast and efficient, Anna explained everything in a very professional manner IE breakfast and dinner times. We walked into an cool refreshed room. with a romantic turn down
The 4 course dinner on Friday night was extra romantic with the set up around the pool under the stars. Waiters were prompted and friendly. Nathi ( the General Manager ) came around and introduced himself and checked that everything were in order.( we felt very welcome) Desire the Asst GM also greeted us and all other guest.
Breakfast were fresh and staff and management were always there to assist. Dumisani and Piet stood out,
Saturday we went to the newly opened Inyama Grill house for dinner, again staff were friendly ( Agnes, Yolanda) and food was appetizing and good value for money.
Overall still a fantastic hotel and only an hour from Pretoria, a real gem.

Keep up the good work Nathi and team

Firstly we could not change our booking following a government lockdown change as Hotels.com could not get hold of a manager to authorise. The Wifi connectivity at the hotel was virtually non existent, if you managed to connect. The room smelt of wet carpet, and you were in undated with flies and mosquitos after opening a window to get some fresh air. Our room was rodent infested. We were transferred to another room but then there was no hot water and we had to use kettles to bath. When maintenance came the next morning, they did not wait for the door to be answered and let themselves in at 8am. We were told the hotel was closed for over a year. Dinner was a mess. Crumbed mushrooms came with sweet chilli sauce and not tartare sauce as per the menu. Ordered Cajun Kinglklip but got battered hake with cheese sauce. Because of curfew, the corrected meal had to be delivered to our room and then that came with cold veggies straight off the original plate. A lemon meringue "pie" ordered the next day was a tartlet and came with chocolate mousse as the restaurant had no ice cream and whipped cream would take "too long". The last morning housekeeping arrived at 8:30. The tv reception in the room was bad on most channels and they were limited to start with. When asked for something for compensation for the inconvenience (not a cheap hotel) we were offered a dinner but owing to previous experience we had made alternate arrangements. We were told sorry, there is nothing else they can do. Be warned.

This iconic and old hotel established in the early 1930's reminds one of a scene from a Hollywood movie. The views are amazing and the boat rides tranquil. However the hotel us in need of some upgrades and the staff in the restaurant need to be quicker with servicing customers. Good experience for a day experience and one night stay. The hotel definitely need to consider expanding their menu as well. Overall a beautiful place if you can overlook some challenges with with the restuarant.

Having stayed at Riviera on Vaal many years ago, I did think the hotel needed to be upgraded and refurbished.

Having said that the hotel has and is still undergoing various refurbishments.

I stayed in a refurbished room which was extremely spacious, modern, great decor and fantastic views of the gardens and river.

The hotel is situated in a great location, beautiful and well maintained gardens and a golf course.

There are various activities for adults from wine tastings to golf & a great spa.
A small kids play area with regular boat rides cruising along the river.

Great venue for corporate functions, occasions and outdoor events.

The food was good while the service was average.

Overall, once the hotel has been completely renovated and refurbished, I would recommend a visit to experience the new offerings they will introduce.

The parking area is clean, but in need of maintenance. The outside of buildings need maintenance. It is recognised as costly, but the gain in attractive apperance is well worth of the cost. It may soon need an extensive refurbished. Staff at the Reception desk are Extremely Friendly and Helpful. Senior Staff are visible, introducing themselves and offers Assistance and Support. This is what makes for a Welcome and Appreciative feeling, Thank You! Rooms are clean and comfortable, but also in need of upgrade and maintenance. Staff at the restaurant are friendly and delivers Good assistance and Services. Dishes are well prepared and good quality. Amenities and facilities are adequate. Overall guests can expect And Experience a wonderful stay!

TERRIBLE TERRIBLE TERRIBLE doesn't even begin to describe our first time and surely our last time experience.

They charge R195 for a so called "buffet Sunday lunch" the food were horrible, can buy that same food from Spar around the corner and theirs taste much better with a good variety, this place surely can't call themselves a hotel because from all the places serving a buffet they are the worst by far and a big waste of money and time. Their so called manager also are no use because when you call him to complain he doesn't even have the ability to attend to a complaint.

Their bathrooms were so dirty as if it wasn't cleaned in a few days time with paper on the floors and toilets not flushed.

That place is a disgrace to say the least.

Reception area is a joke, seating area couches are stained then no aircon. Receptionist's also need to learn what customer service is all about. Only one lift working.
We got the go ahead to our room, to discover that our room was not made up THEN NO aircon.
Had to change our room. The shower and bathroom is quite revolting. (I am stressed about climbing into the shower), the hanging space is fighting with a safe in it and a rod/ wall. So our overall starting point has been one of dissatisfaction.
As a South African I am embarrassed by this once beautiful hotel. We are having Christmas lunch here and quite frankly am dreading it.

What happened to this hotel?
