We stayed over at the lodge in December. Even though we arrived late our cottage was not prepared properly for our arrival. There were no pillow cases and the pillows were stained brown. There was only one towel that was dirty and clearly too old as it was worn thin. The couch was torn. The side tables were falling a part. There isn't a shower. The blinds on the door was torn. The place was infested with flies which were probably attracted to the filthy kitchen counter and wet, dirty dishes packed into the cupboards. The tv made such a loud hissing sound that we could barely hear the show we tried watching. There was a leak in the bathroom. The manager was not concerned with our complaints, such a pathetic excuse for a person in the hospitality industry. HATED IT!

The place is horrible. Nothing works. Not even the DSTV. The new manager is very lazy or just eats the money. NO inventory was given. Units weren't clean. One was missing a fridge. breakfast was about the only good thing.Service was horrible and they had one guy working about 4 jobs. Braai'er, Waiter, DSTV Repairman and pool cleaner. The other Women Double as receptionists and chefs and waiters. They have a terrible staff shortage and a bad attitude.

Nothing positive about our weekend there. Rooms dirty, bedcovers dirty and smelly. Lights not working, lampshades torn and tacky. Cushions on bed, postal stamps are better to sleep on. Every complaint is answered by manager that he has just taken over, only to discover he has been there for 7 months, enough time to fix any problems.

Arrived on Friday and was blown away by the tranquility of being at the riverside. Room was in great condition and quite spacious! However, we went there to relax, so the family spent much of our time on the river bank, just relaxing and enjoying the peace... The staff, including General Manager, Ricardo, receptionists Lerato, Caroline and Martha and even the cleaning staff (Zanele, I think her name was) and the kind lady at the bar ( regret I did not get her name :-) ) as well as the assistants, had really gone the extra mile to make our stay a really enjoyable one! The kids were free to run around in the safety of the complex. Even friends visiting were also impressed! Thanks Tropicana for an excellent experience. Will definitely go back there!

What an aweful experience we had. This place is a pit hole.
When we arrived I sat on the sleeper couch to discover it was broken and landed between two pieces of wood. The place was filthly, the bed side tables had not been cleaned or wiped for who knows how long, thier were still old coffee or tea stains on them as well as on the coffee table in the lounge. The bed linen was disgusting, I had to ask them to remove the linen and replace them with clean ones. The on suite bathroom lights didn't work as well as no bedside lights. I had the shower door fall on me when taking a shower. The basin in the bathroom was blocked. They don't give you bath mats you have to request one. There was a drying up cloth in the kitchen which I thought was a floor rag. Why is this place still allowed to trade let alone as a 4 star establishment. The grading council should take action against this. When we took a walk to the pool to have a swim it was dark green, I was informed that the pump was broken. All you get it Oh sorry, I will report it to the manager and he will contact you. Well he never did. We were supposed to spend 4 days we left after the first.

What a terrible terrible experience at The Tropicana River Lodge. They possibly bought their 4 star rating or it may be from the arc ages- which is very possible as the place is decrepit with No customer care whatsoever. Our weekend at their hotel kick started with a very loud party which continued into the early hours of the morning - with no intervention from hotel management. Oh yes and don't even waste your time trying to dine at their restaurant as a 2 hour wait for food is quite the norm. There were actually diners who ordered Take Away Pizza from Debonairs and they received their food before we even received menus.

The rooms are not serviced, so your chance of getting clean glasses/cups and an empty dustbin is less than zero.

The cherry on top though, was that the establishment had a wedding on the weekend we booked, which is fine except we were never informed of the same and to top it off the reception was 15 meters from our room. The noise was unbearable and when we couldn't even find parking we decided to cut our trip short and check out the same evening.

There are much better establishments in the area - Stonehaven on Vaal being one of them.

Do not waste your time with this place. You will end up being very disappointed.

We spent a wonderful weekend at Tropicana River Lodge in April. After reading reviews that were dreadful I was a little apprehensive - but was pleasantly surprised by the venue. Clean rooms, clean linen, comfortable beds, fabulous strong water pressure in the shower :-), friendly staff, nice views of the river - all in all a lovely weekend! We will be returning.

I think they should look at how this place got their rating! The gardens are overgrown with weeds, so is the tennis court! Sun loungers by the river have rotted so that you can not use them. No braai at our unit. Two bed lamps in the main bedroom, one without either a plug or globe, the other broken one hidden in a cupboard. The aircon's knobs were broken so you either had full aircon or nothing. Toiletpaper looks like a rat has been at it. Dirt swept from the unit left on the grass outside the unit. There is a safe in the cupburd, but no safe key provided. The kitchen light only works if the patio light is off and visa versa. Do not be fooled by the pictures on their website!

I share Herna's comments. We spent the previous weekend there. The room was tacky. The curtains were dirty, as well as the table cloth. There was no kettle , but cups and coffee. There was only a light above the bed and one in the shower , the rest of the light fittings were hanging from the ceiling. No light at the mirror if you wanted to put on make-up.There was no tv or radio in the room. The dust and dirt was just swept out of the room and lay infront of the door- that was obvious as an empty toilet roll greeted your first entrance. The Staff was loud - chatting to one another. The whole place is in dire need of an upgrade and the owner is Angolan- not even in the country.Do not waste your money on this place, rather look elsewhere like Stonehaven or for other places along the river; otherwise you too will be disappointed.

I read the 2014 reviews after I booked and paid the deposit. I was really worried. I could not phone the resort because none of the phone numbers were active!! After a visit to the resort, I was happy that the pictures on the website was a true reflection on the facilities. It was all we needed for a nice family gathering. The garden, the pool, the parking, the walkways are in top form for a winter garden. The chalets were clean and the beds were comfortable and warm. The staff is really something. From security, cleaning, gardener and reception were all EXTREMELY friendly and helpful. We felt like royalty in the resort. We had a great experience and will for sure visit again. The only frustration was the telephone lines that was not working and we had to communicate with staff through their private mobile phones. The phone numbers on letter head of the invoice were not functional, and the website is way outdated showing partnerships that does not exist anymore. Therefore, the 5 star treatment we received from the staff deserve support from the owner to fix the phones to secure the jobs of the staff with more bookings. To the owner at this point....1 Star Rating for marketing. This can kill a very nice resort with wonderful staff.
