An amazing find in the Jo'burg area, this hostel is in the heart of Soweto.
Prior to my stay, a main concern was safety - this was not an issue at all. The property was secure, and there was no problem walking in the surrounding area during the day. There was a fresh dinner prepared each day which was amazing, served with an explanation of what each dish was. The room was very clean and comfortable. I opted for the private room with bathroom, which was great. I took one of the offered walking tours of Soweto, very informative, just what I was looking for. If I need to include one suggestion for improvement, the water was turned off unexpectedly in the area, and it was a challenge finding a bucket/pail with a bit of water to wash hands, etc. Fortunately, the water was flowing again the next day. And, there is also a very comfortable area across the road to sit and have a drink and watch the passerby's.
Overall, I would highly recommend Lebo's for a solo traveler or couple.

Started in the early 2000’s Lebo saw a need for a backpackers for tourists as tourism slowly infiltrated Soweto. It may be called a backpackers but in my opinion it’s far more than that . It is impeccably clean and attention to detail is perfect . Enough plug points in rooms, sanitizers , great adherence to COVID regulations and smiley, friendly staff. Breakfast was a traditional South African breakfast and filing . There are bicycle , walking and tuk tuk tours. I chose the tuk tuk tour and really enjoyed mingling with the locals and being part of their energy in this vibrant township . My car was parked safely over night and I had no reason to question safety at any point. Wished I could have stayed longer. Both Lebo and his wife Maria are fantastic

this was our fav place in joburg by far! it was one of the only places we stayed in SA without spiky gates and security yet we felt totally safe and relaxed. lebo's seemed to be a big part of the community and they certainly did soweto proud!

the staff is lovely, the facilities are clean and spacious. the food is delicious, definitely get the lunch/dinner, the chefs are wonderful and the food is true south african gold (also for vegetarians like me).

the walking tour also exceeded our expectations! we didn't know what to expect, but it was amazing. the tours guides are locals with high energy, lovely people, great storytellers, everything you want in a guide. we went around and saw the real soweto, from very poor areas where we tried delicious food from a local vendor, to the vilakazi street with a heavy history and beautiful memorial. you really respect the community (for example you don't go and stare through the window of desmond tutu's house because people actually live there) and you can support local vendors if you want to. a delicious home cooked potjie lunch is included in the tour, you sit outside in the lovely bar/restaurant area.

they even let us shower after we checked out before we left for the airport, which they really didn't have to do and most hostels wouldn't allow that. the hospitality is wild.

must go experience it :)

We had an amazing 2 night stay at Lebo’s in the double room with private bathroom. All the rooms looked very comfortable and shared bathroom facilities were spotless. You felt very welcomed and all staff were caring and lovely. We did the 4 hour tuk tuk tour which we thoroughly enjoyed and an eye opener. Having a local of Soweto made it more personal and was very informative. Interacting with the locals was a highlight, particularly all the children wanting to wave and say hello. All meals were delicious and the grounds very lively and a great place to sit and chill after a busy day.

Thank you all for a great stay.

Hey there, we stayed in Lebos Soweto Backpackers for about a week and we find this place is an absolute gem. It's more of a hotel then a backpackers. The staff is great and always tries to make you as comfortable as possible. Definitely try out their typical African Dinner Meals and explore the area by doing one of their guided tours of Soweto.
Greetings, Wasili and Sylvia

We loved our stay at Lebo's and only wished we had stayed longer! I would recommend at least two nights. We had a double room with private bathroom which was very comfortable and great value for money. The food was also absolutely delicious and very reasonably priced.

Lebos is not only a place to stay, but a community project with a great ethos. Every staff member was so kind and welcoming, and we had a fantastic tuk tuk tour with Lebo's younger brother where we learnt so much about Soweto. Our guide also tailored the tour to our interests as I had expressed my interest in gardening, so he took us to see a local aquaponics farm just down the road which was fab.

Spending the evening outside by the fire, chatting to other travellers and cuddling Molly the cat was also perfect.

Thank you Lebo's!

I had an incredible experience at Lebo's. The staff were so friendly and went out of their way to make guests feel welcome. The four hour bicycle tour was also very well done. As a solo female traveler, I was a bit nervous about the location at first, but I felt very safe and taken care of the entire time.

If in Johannesburg you would like to experience the real Soweto, Lebo’s is the place to base yourself to take advantage of a range of highly rated tours. We did the 3 hour walking tour led by a very knowledge Sowetan born resident which gave us the opportunity to experience all aspects of Sowetan life right through from the pre-Apartheid era to present day. We stayed one night and benefited enormously from the Soweto experience from lovely accommodation with a wonderful outdoor area, home cooked food and freshly prepared pineapple smoothie. We joined the team and other residents for the evening braai above the hostel in parkland lit by candlelight which included an outdoor documentary on the power of poetry illustrating the effects of “freedom on contemporary South African society” which we found to be very thought provoking. The Staff of the hostel and the residents of Soweto were very welcoming. If you can find the time, don’t just do a tour but stay overnight and enjoy all it has to offer.

Lebo´s is a great place to stay! Everything was very well organized and uncomplicated: Pick up from airport, room, meals, tours. Staff is very friendly. The property is colourful, safe and a great place for relaxing. It is wonderful to learn about Soweto on eye level, talk to locals and experience this very important place for South African history for yourself. You haven´t really understood SA if you did not visit Soweto. lebo´s helps you do this in a passionate, fun and educational way. Thank you!

I booked the 2 hour Tuk Tuk Tour with Lebo's at the last minute. They were very accommodating and arranged a tour that fit my schedule, which was late in the afternoon. I was concerned that two hours would not be sufficient to really get a thorough tour. I have done tours in the past but was traveling with my sister who had never been to SA and I definitely wanted her to experience Soweto before we headed back home. This tour was very comprehensive and I do not feel like she missed out on anything. We were able to tour only in Orlando West but our guide, Tshepo Matsile, was so knowledgeable about the history of Soweto and SA in general that he filled us in on so much that I do not feel as if she was shortchanged in any way. We were able to hike up to higher ground in Orlando West and were able to see the vast expanse of Soweto and Joburg and Tshepo covered everything I learned in prior tours in his comprehensive history lesson. The Tuk Tuk tour was fun and allowed us to be up close and personal to the people and areas we were learning about. It was much better than being in a van or car. I truly admire Tshepo's knowledge, patience, and sense of humor. He was such a nice guy ! So was Tammy, the young lady at Lebo's who handled all the arrangements and made the tour happen for us. I highly recommend Lebo's Soweto Backpackers! If you are not short on time as I was you should opt for the 4 hour tour, but trust me the two hour two left us feeling as if we had not been shortchanged in any way. Great people!

Being on the walking tour of Soweto with Chico as a guide, and having the chance to meet Sowetan's and learn about life in Soweto was a privilege. I hope their tuk-tuk tour is as good. We have just started our trip but this will be one of the most memorable days. Chico not only offers a wealth of information, but also presents this information in a way that is entertaining and heartfelt. Enormous thank u to Chico & Lebo's for making this experience possible!
