From 23:30, construction work starts in the Mandela Square, Sandton. It ends around 6:30 am, the next morning. Jackhammers fires away relentlessly, and workers throw rubble onto a truck, which eco’s through the whole square. . Workers shouting, to be heard over the digging of the jackhammers. We informed Reception on countless occasions, but alas, nobody would make the noise stop. Stay away from Raphael Penthouse Suites, should you require a good night’s rest. It won’t happen here.
We were there just overnight but enjoyed our stay. We loved where it was situated, basically on top of a giant luxury shopping mall. The room was good, the bed comfortable. A great suite if you are there on extended business because it has a full kitchen.
I've been at this property now for a couple of days (have now uploaded photos) and whilst on day one I was delighted by the square footage, the room having a lounge area and washing machine, by day three I have come to the realisation that this property doesn't supply the basics and is in dire need of deep renovation. Whilst its a decent sized space, the biggest issues are: Shabby sofa / furniture that is worn and lumpy and must be replaced with upholstery and buttons falling off. Fitted wardrobe is off its rails and doesn't close properly (this could be so easily fixed before a guest arrives). 10+ year old TV connected to an SD DStv decoder (not PVR, Not HD) via composite cable and a 14 inch CRT TV from the 1990s in the bedroom - so easily replaced without needing full room renovation . Rain water flooding into room and making carpets wet Shower head can't be moved downwards and away from the shower door causing flooding of the bathroom. Again something that can be easily fixed. No Iron or Ironing Board in the room, despite having a washing machine, this property doesn't even provide the basics of an iron and ironing board which can be found in almost every other hotel worldwide. Limited privacy as the whole length of the space has full length windows with the curtains not fully covering the windows. Light switches and other fixtures and fittings falling off or broken. Despite this, staff have been friendly and generally helpful, but for the price this place is hugely disappointing and doesn't meet basic standards for repair / and basic equipment etc. e.g. room TVs. There is little I can commend to anyone and I feel rather let down by the whole experience. I would no recommend staying here again under any circumstances as there are so many options at much better prices.…
Nice appartement overlooking Nelson Mandela Square. The surrounding air conditioning a bit nosy. Easy accès to mall and restaurant. Room could need a revamp in decoration and appliance. Breakfast at the Maximilian restaurant
Short of staying at one of the other hotels in the vicinity, you couldn’t get any closer to the shopping centre & Nelson Mandela Square. Restaurants & bars everywhere. Stayed in a grand suite. Very grand indeed. Came with it’s only plunge pool & a family of pigeons, which made the place homely. The staff were just excellent, just couldn’t do enough for their guests. Only minute niggle, TV’s in either room need updating with DSTV connectivity. A pain constantly walking into the living room to change channels. Aside of that, just a great stay.
Quiet. Clean and beautiful. Close to all the action. The Hotel is hidden away from the noise and attention of the Michelangelo but still offers the same comfort. It is right on the square and surrounded with amazing restaurants and good shopping.
We are a family of four. We booked in at the Raphael Penthouse Suites on the SAT 20th April 2019. 1) When we arrived with a trailer, and baggage and 2 kids, I could not understand for the life of me, HOW CAN you let guests park "ON THE ROAD" where taxis and other traffic fly pass you, just missing you, to book in and off load? its does not make any sense to have it like that. My wife and children were at risk for 1 hour!! You have to fix the area where people get off, and it was raining !!! NO roof over your head, so we all got wet and so did the luggage. (not the porters fault, he did his best, its the setups fault.) 2) After an hour, got into the room!!! kitchen was nice, lounge was nice, thats it !!! BAthroom was dirty and sandy balcony OH NOW, i cant even write about it. room was smelling of cigarettes, fridge very dirty. air con was not working, (was told to cal maintenance) u just arrive from a long drive theres no time for that nonsense, (why was is not taken care off before)_ ??? tv remotes not working, Thats when i HAD IT !!! I must mention the 2 gentlemen in charge, very helpful, tried to make the mess of the hotel not seem so bad. I complained at the reception and I demanded to be transfered immedialtely, They then called the MICHAEL ANGELO HOTEL, and there, all was sorted. I was transfered to the other hotel, a quick walk throught the mall, and we were sorted out with class and speedy service. But I lost 4 hours of my 1 night get away :( Ill never stay at the Raphael penthouse suites again. "a concerned legacy hotel member"…
When we arrived at our apartment, the air conditioning was not working and the room was very warm. We reported this and an engineer turned up, fiddled with the controls and tried to persuade us that it was now working, it wasn't!! The furniture was worn and outdated and the whole apartment was in need of refurbishment. We were eventually offered a move to completely different apartment in a separate tower (Michelangelo Tower) which is owned by the same group. This was much better apartment.
Booked this hotel when they were running black Friday specials. The room at 1st seemed fine, couches were bit dated and arm rests were sinking, thought it's normal as this is a old hotel and is in need of maintenance/upgrades. Corridor had a bit of damp smell, then noticed piece of carpet was removed so assumed that was the cause. The bathroom pressure was ok but no hot water, asked the front desk to have resolved while we went for breakfast, apparently they did, the bathroom was dirty when we got back, but still no hot water. Front desk then gave us a card to use the a different room to go shower and that's when I realised the room we got was 1 of their bad/poorly kept rooms and there are much better rooms available, not sure who those are reserved for. Much better couches, proper hot water and good shower pressure.…
I booked the two bedroom apartment and the decorations and room supplies were outstanding , the space and cleanliness is awesome bathrooms were perrrfect. Besides having issues with the room tv’s channels not working and balcony and swimming pool dirty the rest was very pleasant. The thing I liked the most was the staff at Reception very friendly and helpful. I would only advice to keep an eye on the maintenance/cleaning staff and update the furniture and tv’s to make it even better
