Not great. Not 5 star. Amenities poor. Old TVs. Noisy. Staff not friendly. Not presentable or forthcoming. Old. Tired. Coffee in fridge was 11 months old. No Netflix or smart TVs. Beds not comfortable. No King or Queen beds. Aircon ok. Security system didn't work. No decor. Sheets were clean. Towels clean. Safe was working.

We were there just overnight but enjoyed our stay. We loved where it was situated, basically on top of a giant luxury shopping mall. The room was good, the bed comfortable. A great suite if you are there on extended business because it has a full kitchen.

During our recent stay at the hotel, my expectations were unfortunately not met, largely due to what I found to be significant oversights and, at times, concerning behavior from some members of the hotel staff. As someone who has had the privilege of traveling to over 76 countries and has been a guest at numerous top-tier hotels worldwide, I believe I have a comprehensive understanding of the standards that one should anticipate from establishments that pride themselves on excellence in hospitality.

The experiences that stood out during my stay were not in line with these standards. From the onset, the reception was less than warm. While I understand that everyone can have an off day, in the hospitality industry, it's paramount to ensure that guests feel welcomed and valued. Regrettably, this was not the impression I received.

Further, there were several operational glitches that marred the experience. For instance, our room service orders were either delayed significantly or mixed up on more than one occasion. Additionally, basic amenities that one would expect to be replenished daily, such as toiletries and towels, were often overlooked. These might seem like minor issues in isolation, but when combined, they paint a picture of a system that is not functioning as seamlessly as it should be.

Moreover, during our interactions with the hotel staff, there were instances where their behavior left a lot to be desired. Professionalism, in my opinion, extends beyond just performing one's job duties—it encompasses how one communicates, addresses concerns, and ensures that guests are having the best possible experience. On several occasions, when we raised concerns or made requests, the responses we received were either dismissive or lacked the necessary urgency. This was not only surprising but also disheartening, considering the reputation of the hotel.

Furthermore, the general ambiance of the hotel did not resonate with the relaxing and refreshing experience one would expect. Whether it was the noise levels in the common areas, the upkeep of the facilities, or the lack of attention to detail in areas such as dining or leisure activities, the overall feel was that of a place that was not operating at its peak potential.

Now, I do not write this review with the intention to disparage but to provide feedback that could be constructive. The foundation of the hospitality industry is built on the experiences and feedback of its patrons. While the physical aesthetics of a hotel play a role in its appeal, it's the intangibles—like service quality, staff behavior, and operational efficiency—that truly define a guest's stay.

Given my extensive travels and experiences, I found the current state of affairs at this hotel to be notably different from the premier service I've grown accustomed to at other renowned establishments. I believe that potential guests should be aware of these issues, as they could impact the quality of their stay. Moreover, I sincerely hope that the management takes this feedback in the constructive spirit it's intended and makes the necessary changes.

While the location and structure of the hotel hold promise, there is a pressing need for improvements in various operational aspects and staff training. Until then, I would be cautious in recommending this hotel to those who prioritize a seamless and high-quality hospitality experience.

This hotel was an absolute disaster. Check in was good with front of house promising breakfast would be delivered to the suite at 6h00 as we had to leave at 6h30. At 6h10 the following morning the front of house had no idea of the order. It eventually arrived close to 6h30. The hotel indicates it has an on site restaurant. It does not. Breakfast is at the Da Vinci suites. The breakfast selection is that of a 3 star facility. A small buffet table. Cooked breakfast was shocking. A chef who presented a poached egg that looked like a fried egg and then tried to tell me he uses a poaching cup. What 5 star chef used a poaching cup and then the egg has the same thickness and look as a fried egg. Poached eggs are meant to be cooked in a bit of boiling water.
Room was clean, well equipped but tired. The draws in the one bedroom cupboard could not stay closed on their own unless the cupboard door was closed. I was offered a move to the Michaelangelo Towers but opted to stay as this hotel has a lovely balcony. After I complained the staff were rude particularly at reception which is disappointing. I suggest that you give this hotel a skip and perhaps it’s sister properties too. If I was a director of this hotel group I would have a good look at the competence of my team and do some self reflection too. A dismal experience and nothing 5 star about it

You would think being in the heart of Sandton would be amazing. But we had not been able to rest after a long trip coming from London. The Hard Rock Cafe plays the loudest music until early hours of the morning. Than you get people shouting and singing loud on the square. When you call the reception and ask them what can be done, they took forever to answer the phone and said they can't do anything. I would not recommend this place if you want to have a peaceful sleep.

On top of that, the hotel is old and tired. Not sure how they are still rated 5 stars.

From 23:30, construction work starts in the Mandela Square, Sandton. It ends around 6:30 am, the next morning. Jackhammers fires away relentlessly, and workers throw rubble onto a truck, which eco’s through the whole square. . Workers shouting, to be heard over the digging of the jackhammers. We informed Reception on countless occasions, but alas, nobody would make the noise stop. Stay away from Raphael Penthouse Suites, should you require a good night’s rest. It won’t happen here.

I've been at this property now for a couple of days (have now uploaded photos) and whilst on day one I was delighted by the square footage, the room having a lounge area and washing machine, by day three I have come to the realisation that this property doesn't supply the basics and is in dire need of deep renovation.

Whilst its a decent sized space, the biggest issues are:
Shabby sofa / furniture that is worn and lumpy and must be replaced with upholstery and buttons falling off.
Fitted wardrobe is off its rails and doesn't close properly (this could be so easily fixed before a guest arrives).
10+ year old TV connected to an SD DStv decoder (not PVR, Not HD) via composite cable and a 14 inch CRT TV from the 1990s in the bedroom - so easily replaced without needing full room renovation .
Rain water flooding into room and making carpets wet
Shower head can't be moved downwards and away from the shower door causing flooding of the bathroom. Again something that can be easily fixed.
No Iron or Ironing Board in the room, despite having a washing machine, this property doesn't even provide the basics of an iron and ironing board which can be found in almost every other hotel worldwide.
Limited privacy as the whole length of the space has full length windows with the curtains not fully covering the windows.
Light switches and other fixtures and fittings falling off or broken.

Despite this, staff have been friendly and generally helpful, but for the price this place is hugely disappointing and doesn't meet basic standards for repair / and basic equipment etc. e.g. room TVs. There is little I can commend to anyone and I feel rather let down by the whole experience. I would no recommend staying here again under any circumstances as there are so many options at much better prices.

When we arrived at our apartment, the air conditioning was not working and the room was very warm. We reported this and an engineer turned up, fiddled with the controls and tried to persuade us that it was now working, it wasn't!! The furniture was worn and outdated and the whole apartment was in need of refurbishment. We were eventually offered a move to completely different apartment in a separate tower (Michelangelo Tower) which is owned by the same group. This was much better apartment.
