My family and I had a very memorable 6 night stay at the fabulous Balalaika. This country style hotel in the heart of Sandton has been around since the mid 1940's and has outlasted so many establishments in Johannesburg. Having recently undergone a refurbishment, the rooms were really well furnished, and overall, the hotel looked light and bright and refreshed, and having breakfast in the gorgeous garden setting was a real treat. I wanted to say a huge thank you to Kalika McAlpine, Shannon Blyth, and the team at Balalaika, for the warm welcome they arrange - to arrive in our rooms and find the treats that had been arranged was such a lovely and unexpected touch. From the time we have arrived, the Balalaika team were awesome. - from the always prompt responses to all the emails and questions I had prior to our trip, to the warm welcome and continued service excellence we received at the hotel. THANK YOU for making this trip a memorable one. We will definitely be back when we visit South Africa again.

During checkin an advanced payment had to be done just to prevent additional costs with frigobar or laundry. I travelled in business and not aware of and get surprised when they asked for. for lucky I had this money and payed in cash. During checkout I asked for the reimbursment and the staff tried to reimburse in rand but I refuesed just because I had paid in usd. After many bla bla bla and phone calls they decided to reimburse my usd and not ZAR.

The team can be quite frustrating from security and housekeeping to the front office. The roof leaks and the layout feels like a maze, making it easy to get lost while trying to find your room. The staff lacks basic client relationship skills, customer service awareness, and the ability to ensure a comfortable stay. I would strongly recommend choosing an Airbnb instead of this hotel, as the frustrations during your stay may lead to regret.

A rambling, comfortable hotel with responsive staff, offering quiet sleeping rooms, a tasty buffet breakfast, laundry services and a shuttle to Nelson Mandela Square and shops. The Balalaika in Sandton offered a welcoming shelter for us after two wonderful weeks in Madagascar and a plane ride from Tana, its capital to Johannesburg. It allowed us a good jumping off point for bus tours of Johannesburg and Soweto, as well as visits to local art galleries and a jazz club.

I attended a training workshop at this hotel. The staff were so friendly and helpful, from the reservation stage, to arranging airport transfers and during the stay.
The meeting room presented the perfect training environment. The meals were very nice with a nice presentation.
The room was nice, quiet and clean.
The complimentary shuttle to the city center every half hour was an icing on the cake.

My family wanted to stay in Sandton central. I wanted to add to my Marriott loyalty points so picked this hotel.
Firstly, the parking is not on premises and comes at an additional cost.
I also took the package deal, which includes breakfast and on arrival I was told it doesn’t include breakfast. Still not sure what the package deal then includes, if the app says stay for breakfast. That is how it works at the other Protea hotels I’ve stayed at.
The reception area and other entertainment areas are renovated and nice.
The rooms were awful!
Our bedding was stale, discoloured and had spots on. Same with the second room we took for our children. The shower leaked so in our children’s room, that after the first shower, my son used ours. Which also leaked, but not as badly. So we all had very quick showers as not to flood the place. Bathrooms are ‘renovated’, but old and old fashioned.
After a long trip, this destination was a disappointment.
We will never go back to this hotel. May be conveniently located in the CBD, but not at all a good experience for us.

We needed to spend one night back in Johannesburg and selected this location.
I would describe this location as a good Sandton location, about two blocks from the mall and Mandela Square.
This was our first and only stay in a Protea hotel. It was…different. We were visiting from North America and chose this property for its location, and because we are Marriott Bonvoy members. We were expecting something of a Marriott-caliber hotel.
What we got was an odd mixture of outdated buildings, coupled with decor and attempts at ambiance with a richer feel. So the lobby was nicely done. Where it exceeds most Marriott properties was in the landscaping and public areas which were frankly lush and almost tropical, with nice pool settings!
But then, where this hotel lost us was in the room. While I think we were upgraded to a large room, it was, and I don’t know how to say this nicely…ugly! Though it’s been recently repainted, the decor is from the 70s, and the bathroom from the 60s. In short, it needs a good refurbishment!
Public hallways have old 1970s-style carpeting with sections of brown terracotta tile floors. The whole ambiance is just an odd mix! Almost like it’s trying to be something it’s not…but could be.
But let's give credit where credit is due. The staff were wonderful! Everyone from the front desk team, to the bellmen, and concierge. All were very friendly and accommodating with a customer service drive and eagerness to please!
While I doubt we’ll be back to South Africa (it’s just too far for people from the West Coast of North America to travel to regularly), if you have business to attend to in the Sandton area, this hotel likely serves a useful purpose. If however you are looking for something with a bit more style and modern amenities, we stayed at the African Pride our first three nights in Johannesburg (see my review for that property) and would certainly recommend them.

Very safe- Centre is inter-connected to the hotel and the lifts!!
Not sure. You can take the Gautrain from the airport to Sandton, and take a taxi from there.
Alternatively, you can take an Uber from the airport directly from the hotel.
Or you can contact Tessa at the hotel: 0027 11 322 5000
