Green Gables is a peaceful & well established guest house which has a Cape Dutch country house ambiance. Our spacious, en-suite bedrooms are all individually decorated and have separate entrances. The sprawling, largely indigenous garden, with a number of private areas, is home to a wide variety of birdlife. Breakfast comprises of a self-service buffet with a variety of teas and coffees, fruit juice, cereals, fresh fruit salad etc. plus the cooked breakfast of your choice (i.e. all cooked breakfasts are cooked to order). Green Gables, being situated in Rivonia, is very conveniently situated for Sandton, Woodmead & Sunninghill. In addition there are numerous restaurants in Rivonia (within 1,5 K's of the guest house). By the way, all rooms have underfloor heating and the bed linen is Egyptian Cotton by Chrysalis.

The self-catering unit I stayed in was lovely and I had all I needed for my two nights stay. The room was beautifully furnished and it was a really comfortably place to relax in and to get a good nights sleep. It had a small kitchen and nice Lounge and Small Study Table if you needed to do some work. The staff and management were extremely friendly, accommodating and easily accessible.

It is always pleasant to stay at Green Gables. It gives you a feeling of being home. The location is perfect as it is in a very quiet area, however, very close to the shops, main roads and everything you need. The owner and host of the guesthouse personally prepare the meals and always ensure that it is to your satisfaction. Also, make sure you chat with the owner, the property has a very interesting history!

Room was not clean, kitchen not clean. Sitting area dirty. There was plumbers in my room when I got from my training and my stuff was open. No one even bother to ask if it will be okay. Dogs at the kitchen area seems under fed and flies all over them. Swimming pool and fish pond green. They really need to sharpen up there guest house if they want to attract more visitors. There was a terrible smell in the passage and food not near to standards for a 4 star guest house

Response from c H, Owner at Green Gables
Responded 16 Feb 2018
I am really not quite sure to respond, these guests had dinner while they were staying at Green Gables and so (as I cook dinner) they saw me every evening & every morning at breakfast and they said nothing to me. To deal with the various complaints in order: Room not clean; this is a very unusual complaint at Green Gables, all I can say is that a number of people have stayed in these rooms since these guests left and I have not received any other complaints. All rooms are cleaned on a daily basis. Kitchen not clean: the kitchen is an open plan kitchen so that I can talk to the guests when I am cooking for them so obviously they can see the kitchen. I have to query what defines dirty, I certainly only use clean pots and pans and clean the working surfaces as I work. In the 13 years that I have been running Green Gables this is the first time that this complaint has been levied at us. ' Sitting area dirty: by sitting area I assume that they mean the main hallway which all the guests use to get to their rooms. This is cleaned on a daily basis but obviously guests are using this area all the time. Plumber in room: If there was a plumber in the rooms what is the problem? if there is a plumbing problem I have to call out a plumber and obviously I am in the hands of the plumber with respect to the time that he can get to the guest house. MY STUFF WAS OPEN implies that my staff or the plumber opened MY STUFF; if that is the accusation it is very serious and I am surprised that no complaint was made at the time.. We do not open guests bags ever; if they were open they were left open by the guest. I have used Themba (the plumber) for 9 years and have always found him very trustworthy. I do not understand that no one asked it was ok; the staff go into all rooms very day. Dogs at the kitchen area: A) as a 4 star graded guest house we have a kitchen and dining room that are for the use of the guests only. Hygiene regulations do not permit me to allow my dogs in this area; to be clear, B) my dogs are never in the kitchen or the dining room. they are sometimes in the pool area adjacent to the dining room. Dogs seem underfed: this I can and do take exception to. I have 2 Ridgebacks Victoria & William; Ridgebacks are classified as hounds and are supposed to be lean. In addition to this Victoria is 14 1/2 years old (average life expectancy for a Ridgeback is 12) and William has won a couple of prizes at Ridgeback shows. Flies happen. Green Pool: the guest is perfectly correct; I have ben battling for months to get it right and have been getting professional advice from Brandon's pools and just have not been able to sort it out. However, the other day I decided to change the sand in the filter. On taking the sand out I found that the main pipe bringing water into the filter had snapped ( you could only see this with the sand removed) and so whenever I thought I was backwashing the pool I wasn't ! The pool company I use could not repair it and so I installed a new filter 1 1/2 weeks ago. Smell in passage: As I write this I am looking at the passage which has an outside door at either end and they are both open as they usually are during the day. Food; as I have said, in addition to breakfast, these guests also had dinner. Every morning at breakfast I ask guests who are having dinner,,what they would like for dinner that evening. SO. whatever they had was what they chose. Of course, that does not mean that the food was good or that they enjoyed it. However, I do have some idea what I am doing in the kitchen; I went to hotel school and spent a year in the kitchens of the Savoy Hotel in London. I cook all meals to order, I do not buy in pre-cooked frozen food. I do not only ask guests what they want to eat, I ask them how they want it cooked and that includes the vegetables. As I make a point of being involved in the running of the guest house and saw these guests on a daily basis, I find it upsetting that they left the gust house without talking to me about these issues, in particular the implication that someone had opened their "stuff".
