After reading a lot of negative comments, I almost cancelled my booking but then, I decided to go and see for myself. The place was not as bad as put, or I was lucky I got a good room. Knobs were working, lights were working and I was happy with the reception and service I got. Microwave was fine, they had an iron, fridge was superb, TV great.... I really failed to see what previous complaints were about.

I was disappointed with one aspect of cleaning though. There was evidence (gross) that the guest toilet had been used and not cleaned but only flushed. Some brushwork and detergent would have been good. The heaters are also not adjustable (or I was ignorant). Either on or off.

The neighbourhood was peaceful and quiet, didn't walk about but went to Sandton Shopping Mall, where you can shop for literally anything. This is a good place to stay and I would recommend it. I am happy to answer any questions you may have too..

We stayed one night in late April, our first night ever in Johannesburg and in Africa. We would have stayed a second but had to go to another hotel from which we were leaving on a tour early next morning. Glenalmond feels more like a motel than a hotel in that is has small blocks of discrete apartments set in landscaped grounds with plenty of parking space. Our apartment was light, spacious, clean and well-appointed with a lounge-dining area and full kitchen. It was also good value, and management was helpful, happily storing our luggage safely for a day and calling an Uber for us when we left. However, the apartments are getting a little worn and our stay was marred by a series of small things that reflect insufficient care/maintenance - the electricity kept flipping off (we think related to the aircon as it stopped doing it once we put that off), we couldn’t turn hot water on in shower so had to have a bath which neither of us likes, and the smoke alarm battery was so low it was bipping all night until we removed it.
The hotel is located in Sandton, about 10 minutes walk from the Gautrain station (new, clean, safe, easy to use public transport). Sandton station is on the direct line from the airport and is also one stop from Rosebank, the location of the office and start for the Hop On Hop Off City Sightseeing bus. We found this HOHO bus the easiest way to get safely around the city for international tourists new to the city on a short visit. It also runs a free shuttle between Rosebank and Sandton (stopping at some of the larger hotels, as well as the Gautrain station) in the morning and evening (see their website). This all works well in daylight hours for a stay at Glenalmond, when walking in Sandton is deemed quite safe, but recommendations are not to walk after dark. In autumn it is dark around 6pm and it is difficult to get back from the day's sightseeing by this time. The hotel no longer runs its own shuttle to/from the station, so, while not be an issue for Uber users, for others it is a bit challenging to accomplish the short section from the station to the hotel after dark (we walked it once with no issues, but it is daunting with all the warnings).
The hotel will organise a pick-up from the airport (cost 600ZAR) but you can easily use the Gautrain if you are prepared for the 10min walk to the hotel. There is apparently a supermarket quite close to Glenalmond but we didn't use it as it is in the opposite direction to the station. Instead we used one at Rosebank which is very close to the HOHO bus stop.

You have to keep in mind that this review is being written taking the cost of this accommodation into consideration. If you're looking for luxury accommodation, look elsewhere. That said, for the price and area of Johannesburg (Sandton is probably the safest and most up-end suburb in the city), you'd be hard pressed to find better accommodation than the Glenalmond.

The staff is very friendly and accommodating -- even before our arrival, they made arrangements for transportation to await us at the airport (which we paid directly to the driver), and for two day tours (the Cradle of Humankind and Soweto) at very good prices.

The rooms are small fully furnished (including kitchen) mini-apartments with a living room (with TV + cable) and balcony, and one or two bedrooms, with air conditioning in the main room. Note that the one-bedroom comes with a single double bed (the two-room has a double bed in one room and two singles in the other), so if you need a different arrangement (e.g. extra mattress or folding bed in the bedroom or living room), make sure to let them know in advance.

The bathrooms are not super-modern, but acceptable and reasonably clean. Showers have good temperature and water pressure. There's even a washer and dryer guests can use at no charge (just bring your own wash powder).

The hotel has a pool as well. We didn't make use of it, as it was a little cool (winter-time...), but I'm sure it would be nice in the summer.

Breakfast is served in the "Coffee Shop" next to the reception (and may be included in the room price, depending on what you reserved). It's a reasonable breakfast in South African style, with warm food (eggs, mushrooms, sausages; on one of the 3 days we spent here they also had bacon), and muesli/cereals with fresh fruits and milk or yogurt, and of course coffee and tea.

The hotel is quite safe, bring situated in what is generally considered the safest residential location in Johanbesburg, and like most other hotels and private residences in South African cities, surrounded by a security wall. As it's generally considered not safe/unwise to leave the premises after dark, there's an entire menu of restaurants from which you can order deliveries to your room (at reasonable prices), via one central number -- you get the delivery within 45 minutes.

During the day, you can go out and it's a short (~15 min / a little over 1 km) walk to Nelson Mandela Square and the Sandton City Mall, apparently the largest shopping center in the city.

All in all, taking into consideration the cost, a good accommodation option in Johannesburg which I can recommend.

My mother and I were visiting South Africa to see family in July, and decided to stay at the Glenalmond Hotel. After being put in a room that really wasn't very nice, the manager kindly allowed us to change room to one that was better, on the floor above. On our second night there my mother heard something whilst we were sleeping, only to find a man climbing through our window. She had to beat him out of the room before he could get in...who knows what would have happened if he did! The security guard on sight eventually came to our room and had a look around and suggested that it may have been a big bird....??, and only after my mom had asked him, called the security response company. The next morning when speaking to the manager he informed us that 'no incident' had happened according to both the external and internal security reports, despite them both seeing the footprints up the wall. What was most shocking however, is that the manager seemed to have absolutely no sympathy for the situation, and made it sound as if we were making it up. Needless to say, my mother and I left that day (despite having paid the full amount of 8 nights in advance), with a refusal from the manager to refund our money. With something so life threatening and scary happening, we have never been more disappointed with the level of service or sympathy from a Manager .. this also left us thinking it may have been an inside job. I suggest you avoid staying at this hotel.

Firstly when my family and I arrived at this hotel the first impression was really bad. Walking into that room it smelt like no one had stayed in there for years. Having travelled for 26+ hours all I wanted was to have a shower. The floor was so mouldy it made me feel sick I had to wear slippers in there plus the door was in shambles. When I started having a shower the shower head fell on me. DISGRACEFUL!

Furthermore when this hotel was booked we were assured that Wi-Fi would be accessed from the room free of charge and on attempting to connect nothing happened. Calling reception I was answered by a gentleman who told me that for Internet in the room id need to pay R290. On going down to reception I asked the gentleman if he could show me what plans they had. The plan for the price advised was wrong and when I questioned him he argued back with me. I finally paid R250 instead of the price advised beforehand and that wasn't the end of it. We got back to the apartment and tried to connect our laptops and it only took one device. When we called reception again the gentleman accused us for not telling him that we were connecting multiple devices. Nothing on the Internet slip mentioned charges to be per device hence why I didn't see the need to advice so. On seeing that I couldn't get through the rudeness of the guy I asked to see the managers first thing in the morning. The next day I went to reception to check why no one had come to see me. The lady on the desk said she had no idea that this had happened the night before as no one had mentioned it to her. I had to waste half an hour of my holiday time explaining that I had been placed In a pigsty of a room and explain the issue of the Wi-Fi all over again. No incident reports were written which means they wouldn’t care less if we got a concussion. Talk about good management and communication skills. All of this was resolved and we got room moved to a better apartment (and I mean 100 times better).

A few days later we asked housekeeping not to clean our apartment as we were spending the day indoors since it was raining. On attempting to wash the dishes water started spilling from the drain area. We then called reception to send maintenance to come and have a look since we didn’t know what was going on. A guy called Francis came with a lady who started scrapping a pan that was on the stove blaming my family for pouring oil into the drain and therefore blocking it. We tried to explain to her that we had never done the dishes since day one as we just left it for housekeeping to take care of. This lady did not care about that and kept verbally attacking my mum. We then called reception and explained to them that we weren’t comfortable with the behaviour of this lady. The lady was then sent up again and instead of apologising she confronted my mum about calling reception and complaining about her. After this the since was fixed but we didn’t even get any apology or explanation as to why the water was flooding the kitchen.

I could go on forever with how many things went wrong but overall it was a disappointing and waste of 11 days accommodation with my family. There were a few individuals who made us feel at home especially Jack (the French Fellow), the housekeeping lady who came to apartment 22 on Christmas day and Frank from Reception but the rest were really disappointing. I wouldn't come back at all to Glenalmond neither would I recommend it to anyone. It was a great location but there has to be a great review on service. If you do stay at this property just make sure nothing goes wrong with your room as they don’t know how to solve problems in a diplomatic way. Our dignity was stripped open.

Stayed while having a conference at nearby Sandton convention centre, after stayed for a few extra days to relax with some family members. The apartments were clean and modern, and excellent for the price. The entire staff, from reception, security and the cleaners were just excellent, they even went out of their way to bring us breakfast to the rooms, special thanks to Xolani for making our stay so great. Will be going back same time next year! Regards to the staff from the UK and Zambia!!

We enjoyed a nice evening in our 2 bedroom-2 bath space with kitchen, living room and patio! Though the property is old and a bit dated, it was clean and comfortable and wonderful for entertaining friends. The staff was very friendly and helpful and take pride in their property! Breakfast was very nice as well! We were able to walk to the Gautrain without luggage and it was a short taxi ride when we were carrying our bags! We were able to get into J'burg , Rosebank, and the airport by train and walk to several places in Sandton on the path across the street.

GlenAlmond Hotel is located in near to the heart of the city. You can not walk to office from here though so you need taxi. Room are nice and clean and peaceful. Tariff are reasonable. But few improvements hotel need do:

1) Rooms are on first floor without lift so there should be staff to take your luggage. It is common courtesy.
2) Hotel only serves breakfast. Dinner is the biggest drawback of this hotel, either you have call a delivery guy or go outside and eat.
3) You also need a bar where you can sit, relax and have few drinks in the evening.
4) If not above, there should be a vending machine you can buy chips, juice etc.

But overall, recommendable.

We apologise for the absence of a porter to assist with your luggage and have since hired one to do so.
