Beautiful, tranquil and well located accomodation. The staff do not spare one detail. Zodwa truly was amazing. The breakfast was delicious and the reasonably priced accomodation was well situated within Sandton.

We stayed for two nights and were given the best of services. Very nice and clean place. It was raining some during our stay but we loved sitting on the porch (it had a roof) playing games at night.
We had the possibility to stay at the guest house after check out while waiting to go to the airport. During that time we were allowed to use the pool and also a shower, what a service! We would definitely stay here again if we are given a chance.

Amazing stay at Claire's and amazing service from Zodwa and her team. Fresh linen and always clean, neat and tidy. Immediately felt "at home".
Will definitely recommend Claire's of Sandton, Luxury Guesthouse.
Upmarket, yet cosy and secluded.

This place is beyond terrible. They treated us like criminals when we paid in full and our booking was confirmed.

We had family come up from KZN and we decided to join them at the guesthouse for one night. We booked via a well known booking platform, paid in full and received both the payment receipt and booking confirmation.

On arrival at the guesthouse, Zodwa met us at the car and we were called to reception. She then instructed us to go to an ATM and get cash to pay for our booking because according to her there was a problem with her system and our booking was never captured in her system, however, she had received the email from the booking platform as she greeted us by name when we arrived. We then had to call the manager, Samantha, who was not prepared to assist or do anything to try and resolve the issue and the onus lay on us to call the booking platform. We were extremely frustrated and refused to pay a second time.

I then called the booking platform to try and resolve the issue and during that time Zodwa took it upon herself to call armed security guards and instructed them to remove us from the property. She was shouting in the background and I was not able to hear what the booking agent was saying, despite us asking her to keep it down, she continued. I had to shout at Zodwa to ask her to be quiet so that I could continue my phone call.

The booking platform was friendly and helpful, and confirmed that they had in fact made payment to the guesthouse but also mentioned that they had a few other instances at the very same guesthouse where guests were refused check in.

The attitude of this establishment and its staff is absolutely disgusting and completely unacceptable. We are living in unprecedented times and at the very least we would have expected them to have integrity.

The bottom line is if the guesthouse is not willing to accept discounted bookings via various booking platforms, they should remove their listings altogether. Zodwa and her manager Samantha were very quick to call armed security, but had no inkling of assisting us with resolving the issue at hand.

What an absolute disgrace that Claire's of Sandton ruined our entire weekend and also the limited time we had to spend with family, never mind the trauma of the incident.

Response from Muhammad Rajah, General Manager at Claires of Sandton
Responded 10 Dec 2021
Good Morning. We as Claires of Sandton would like to state our side of the event. Our onsite manageress phoned me when the guest arrived after she tried to explain that we did not receive this booking. I tried to explain to the guest how the process works that we receive a booking automatically onto our system once it was made and paid to the booking site and NOT us. Nowhere as the guest accused of lying ,we mearly tried to explain how the booking systems/platforms work. NO payment was made to Agoda to confirm such a booking. We only receive payment from this specific site once the Guest has checked out, we can also not sort out payment the guest claimed to have made ,that is the responsibility of the guest self. I did offer the guest to make a booking directly with us and pay us directly whilst sorting out the claimed payment with the booking site. I think it's a bit unfair for the guest to claim that we do not accept discounted bookings as we put the discounts on the sites and receive bookings daily from various sites. We also received bookings from the guest’s family from KZN band they left us a raving review on Booking.com.and are returning this coming month for the third time. Our onsite manager did call the security to assist as she felt threatened by a very hostile male guest and the security officer was witnessed to this event. Please feel free to have a look at all our reviews on any of the booking platforms. You can contact me if any more information is needed, I can also try and get the security officer from that night to confirm what happened on site. Hope you have a wonderful day. Sam

After good communication via email and your review of Claire's, I was really looking forward to it.
Upon arriving at 4 pm at Claire's after a hellova trip from N Mozambique ( up at 3 am. this morning) we asked for a coffee
We were told that due to load shedding, that would not be possible
We asked for any cold drink . Response was that due to covid, it would not be possible. I was horrified that there was no caring or empathy. TripAdvisor's rating was certainly nowhere nearly correct G

We regularly visit family in Sandton and rather than oust a child from it’s room we prefer to stay at Claire’s, which is like home from home. A well-located, elegant guest house close to Sandton City and the Gautrain, Hyde Park and Benmore shops. Breakfasts are delicious and to order, the rooms comfortable and all look onto the lovely garden. Best of all are the staff - always the most personal and delightful of service! Yes... we will be back!

Having grown up in Johannesburg, I'd never had occasion to look for accommodation there before; having been underwhelmed by the look of the high-rise hotels (and overwhelmed by the prices) we were lucky to find this gem of a place, down a quiet residential avenue just a mile or so from Sandton City.

From the moment we were welcomed by Zodwa, the housekeeper, we were superbly looked after. Our room was spacious, spotless, attractively furnished and well-equipped with a fridge, kettle, complementary milk, tea, biscuits and so on. Like all eight rooms, it was situated just steps from the swimming-pool.

Unlike many B&Bs, the house has plenty of space to relax, including an open plan living/dining area, and a large covered patio scattered with comfy sofas. It's all so comfortable, quiet and relaxing that we had to tear ourselves away for the main event of our trip - a high school reunion.

Breakfast is everything you could wish for - from cereal to fresh fruit to a South African take on a Full English - all beautifully cooked and presented. The dining table faces a window which overlooks the back garden, where an astonishing variety of birds enact a daily pantomime around the birdbath.

Claire proved an engaging and informative host, and really made our day by allowing us to keep our room until 5pm on our final day. Much appreciated; I look forward to returning.

We stayed for one night for a break between flights. The welcome from Zodwa was warm and dinner was provided on request. Nothing fancy but it filled us up and saved us having to go out for dinner after a long flight. The TV made a crackling sound and when we brought it to Zodwas attention she was aware of the problem but stated she had not gotten round to having it fixed. Why then were we offered this room? The bathroom had a musty smell that we put down to not being aired well. The following morning we were horrified to observe extensive mould on the bathroom ceiling hence the musty smell. Again drawn to Zodwa’s attention who we felt was dissmissive and again was aware of the problem. We were not prepared to use the shower with a young child and an adult with respiratory problems and at our insistence was offered another room to get ready. The combination of these issues left us wondering about customer care that placed guests in a room with known problems when other rooms were available. The breakfast was the highlight of our stay and made up for the disappointments of our room but based on our overall experience we are unlikely to return.
