Detailed Reviews
I spent almost three months at 1322 Backpackers (July, August, September). It was fantastic. The owner (Yzelle) and the staff treated me like a family member. Everybody was really nice and helpful.
The rooms are clean and the location is perfect (safe area, Gautrain station and shopping center within walking distance). Nice outdoor facilities, interesting people to meet.

If you are going to stay at a backpackers in the Gauteng area, stay here!! The backpackers place is just 500 meters away from Hatfield Gautrain station, where you can really reach Pretoria, Jo´burg and the airport fast, easy and safe. The place it self is nice with a pool, bar and continental breakfast included. The Hatfield area is also a nice area to walk around and is quite safe becuase of the bars and students frequent it.The family who runs it is very nice, helpful, caring. One of the best places in South Africa to stay at..

I found 1322 through Trip Advisor, and I'm delighted I did. I stayed in three different hostels whilst I was in South Africa, and this was, by a long way, the best. Yzelle (the owner) and Maj (the other member of staff) were both fantastic. I left after 6 nights, but ended up coming back for my final 3 nights in SA because it was so good. I stayed in a few different rooms, all of which were nice, clean and functional.
In terms of its location, it's also ideal. Hatfield is a pretty safe suburb of Pretoria, has a good night life about 10 minutes walk away, and the Guatrain (the new, very safe, train to Pretoria, the airport, Sandton and other parts of Joburg) just round the corner.
Price wise it's also very reasonable, 9 nights there cost me in the region of £120. They also have a laundry service and a nice bar. There were always people about, and it had a very friendly atmosphere.
I can't sing the praises of 1322 loudly enough.

Definitely won't go back to this backpacker. I've been coming here for 15 years this time around I slept on dirty sheets the owner trying to over charge me for a room twice quoting me a much high price for a dorm to what the other guest were pay. I don't know why but that's it for me.

We stayed here for 3 nights in February before going to Mozambique. Yzelle, the owner, was incredibly friendly and warm, and I enjoyed chatting to her about South Africa and our travels around the continent. She gave us lots of information about the area and went above and beyond to make our stay a good one. She even sourced me a license plate (I had been collecting them from each country we visited on our route) and had one of her old ones for me when we arrived.
We stayed in a private room with a bathroom which was incredibly comfortable and clean.
The honesty bar was a nice touch and it’s in a safe nice area. The pool is also really nice.
Wouldn’t hesitate in staying here again. Lovely people and great stay.

I love this place, i've stayed there 3 times (2013, 2014 & most recently November 2015). The owners & staff are so kind, welcoming and friendly. Everywhere is clean, tidy & well presented.
I've stayed in 3 different rooms (a dorm, a private room & a cabin) all have been clean, tidy & comfortable. The bathrooms are always clean, the kitchen is very clean, tidy & has a lot of space so your not crammed in with other guests when making food etc.
The sitting area outside is lovely, great for getting to know other guests or to have a braai (BBQ). The bar is always stocked up, the TV room (where the Wi-Fi is) is warm & comforable.
1322 have the most amazing dog, he's so sweet & likes to be fussed, they also have 2 lovely cats.
Quite simply i love this place, it would get 20/10 from me it's really that good. Highly recommend 1322 if you want peace, quiet & relaxation. The pool is lovely too,

We had a great stay at 1322 backpackers and even extended our initial stay. We had a lovely little wooden cabin at the rear of the property which was comfortable and cosy. The bathrooms were nice and clean, great communal area including kitchen, large outdoor table and an honesty bar.
Monique was wonderful, on our second night she arranged a lovely braai for anyone interested, and also arranged a day trip to the cricket which we thoroughly enjoyed!
The location was great, in a quiet street just off the main road but within walking distance to the local shopping centre with supermarket and restaurants etc.
we have no doubts recommending this as a wonderful place to stay in Pretoria and would absolutely stay again!

I stayed almost 3 months there (feb.-april 2014).
First, the location: the Hatfield Gautrain station (very safe public transportation) is very close (about 10 minutes walk). It is very convenient. For example, you can go to Park Station (downtown Joburg in 45 minutes) or shopping to Sandton (about 30 minutes). You can also take the Gautrain buses to different places in Pretoria (like Menlyn mall). The Hatfield Plaza where you can buy groceries is a 15 minutes walk. At the Plaza, you can also find restaurants and bars. And good news, you can walk safely during day time (which is a plus, compared to many places in Joburg) ! At night time, it is always better to be 3 or more. Also, the sport campus of the Univeristy of Pretoria is very close. I went jogging there and you can also find a gym (you can pay by weeks).
Second, the administration: The owner is one of the nicest person on earth and a very good manager. I was travelling alone so she helped me a lot with advices. Because of the hard work of the 1322 backpacker team, the place is safe, clean and calm (it is of course allow to party, but always in decent limits).
Third, the atmosphere: I travelled quite a lot in SA so I've been in different backpackers. This place is different because you feel like home. It is a warm place, where it's easy to meet people, which is not the case everywhere. I was staying for my studies. It is also a calm place where you can work. Hatfield has a student vibe because of the proximity of the University of Pretoria.
Therefore, I highly recommend the place. You can find different accomodation possibilities (single, double, dorms - female only and mix). The prices are reasonnable. The kitchen is fully equipped (and big), there's a pool, a braai spot, a DSTV, free Wifi, the breakfast is included (bread, jam, cereal, milk), there's a plenty of bathrooms and showers, coffee and tea available all day/night and there's even friendly pets (cats and dog) !

We recently spent 2 nights at 1322 Backpackers and I just wanted to say how Thank you for a brilliant stay. The lady who run the backpackers was helpful and really welcoming. The room was comfortable and clean and the kitchen/bathroom facilities were immaculate. The grounds were well maintained. Compared to others hostels in Pretoria - this hostel is streets ahead. Excellent value for money and the staff were top notch.
Thanks for an awesome 'home away from home'

I ended up staying here after ridding the Shosholoza train which arrived at Park Town 8 hours after it was meant to, meaning it was dusk when we got there. That being the case I didn't really want to leave the train station so I ended up deciding my best bet would be to use the Gautrain to my advantage. I found this hostel was close to Hatfield Station so, knowing nothing else about the suburb, I decided to go with it.
As it was late I decided to ring before I arrived (unusual for me, but given the circumstances...) and luckily they had plenty of space for the time I needed. I asked if I could walk from the station to the backpackers, the lady who took my call advised that it was doable but a taxi might be a better option given it was dark. Being short on money and having already been through some tougher situations I decided to brave it. I was tired and walked there as quickly as I could with no incident.
Because the train had arrived late I didn't have time to draw any money so I didn't have enough cash to cover the cost. The lady who ran the establishment (I'm so sorry I've forgotten your name, you went on Holidays the next day so I only saw you once) was very understanding and said I could pay the bill the next day. She showed me where the kitchens, tv room, bathrooms and finally my dorm were before I put my gear away and settled at the bar. The bar area is quite nice (you can smoke at the bar!!!!!) expanding out to a covered braii area with plenty of table room. The bar staff will happily wet your whistle with there being a tab system in place and they'll even order you a meal.
All the facilities i found to be very clean and tidy. The internet was the best I found in Africa with the speeds allowing for more then one user to be on it at a time. The suburb as I found out over the coming days is home to a University and is very much party central. During my time there they blocked off the main streets and had a big street party which was a nice surprise. I found I had no trouble walking home each night at silly hours (2/3/4am) and would advise those worried about the security of Johannesburg to consider just getting the Guatrain to Hatfield.
Overall I found this place to be very pleasant and laid back, weren't heaps of travelers there but mostly foreign students/academics studying at the local university which was quite a nice change of pace. Would recommend to all!
