There isn't much to like about the Henry George Guesthouse other than the price. After that, it all falls apart. The staff are deliberately unhelpful and weren't willing to even call local taxis. I would also recommend avoiding the breakfast (cereal is the best option) which consists of overcooked eggs and bacon that tastes like plastic. Very disappointed.

I'm not the type that likes to complain. Accommodation experiences depend on your personal preferences. So I'm going to try and write this as objectively as possible and you can make up your own mind.

If you were hoping for any kind of garden or greenery whatsoever, forget this place.
If you are planning to work and need a stable (non-wobbly) desk at which to do so, well, at least ask for it because non-wobbly desks don't come standard.
If you think that adding R50 to your daily rate in order to get a full English breakfast should mean you get to sit in a dining room (not in the hallway / passage at a 4-seater table), maybe this is not the place for you.
Also if you think this breakfast should not arrive lukewarm, with the yolk of the egg broken and cooked until powdery, and with cling wrap over, or if you wanted brewed coffee instead of Ricoffy and a sugar bowl with old sugar crusted on the sides, consider some other place.
If you want to be told that you need to pay the full amount up front (instead of finding that out when you're tired and hungry and arriving at your hotel) - well, now I've told you, so I guess you don't need to write this place off.
If you don't like to hear every word, phone call, and line from the movie the receptionist is watching in the evening and early morning, definitely don't choose room number 7 which is just above the reception area. Maybe the other rooms are better. I did ask her to turn the movie down and she did, but she couldn't turn the ringing of the phone or the speaking of newly arrived guests down. It's just a badly designed layout.
If you would not like to stay at a place where a previous guest (me) asked to borrow the microwave in the kitchen, discovered insects crawling over microwave and kettle, and was told nonchalantly by the receptionist that they are cockroaches, maybe Henry George guest house is not the place for you.

That's my experience.
There are some good aspects... the bedding etc is perfectly clean... the cupboard, though the shelves are of uncoated pressed wood, is clean... the bathroom seems newly refurbished. So if that's all you want - go for it. I've told you the specific things that may put you off.

Room was book for a week 26/3/2017 to 30/03/2017. I called to confirmed booking and payment made by our office, to be told by that I had to pay for accommodation on arrival.

I checked in on the 27/03/2017, after clarifying booking and payment with HG management and our office. I stayed in room 3. Shower door handle was missing, towels were no clean, bed sheets stained and duvet cover edges were dirty.

The morning of the 28/03/2017, arrived for breakfast at 7:15, to no cereal and bread. When I asked where the dining room was, I was pointed to a little corner table, behind the reception area, which is located in the passage to the guestrooms. My response to this, " You people are not serious!". Needless to say, I checked out, and got the office to find me alternative accommodation. This place will never see me again.

My stay was for 3 weeks at Henry George. I was in Pretoria for training at PAN African Training. The bigger rooms upstairs had been fully booked but was made comfortable with ground floor rooms. The Manager Mr. Opesan was very particular about our comfort, the breakfast; he went out of his way to provide what we asked for. The receptionist Abbot was great, would call a taxi every time we needed. Laundry girls were good at their job and rooms were clean. The 3 weeks were spent will minimum hustle. My recommendation is provision of dinner so guests do not have to eat out.

Room Tip: Upstairs rooms have better facilities and view. Outside rooms get noisy because of the bar.

The guest house was visited in November 2015. We arrived at night and only to find out we were given rooms which we did not requested during the bookings. It's like they don't even keep a record of what the guest requested for, they just give out rooms to whoever checks in first. When we explain to the receptionist that we are not happy about this, he just said "you will have to manage it". We stayed in room 2, OMG the curtain rails are about to fall, the bathroom window stay is broken, the shower taps falls off when you open the tap, the TV did not work, what a terrible experience.
The breakfast was worse, you are never asked how you would like your eggs. No....you find everthing prepared already, boiled egg, vienna, OMG that colour, I couldn't eat it and the bacon, oh my...you find the plate wrapped in plastic on a table for four, the table was so small you can hardly place everything on it. The apples were not fresh. The lady serving the breakfast was not even wearing uniform.

When we checked out, we informed the receptionist that the tv did not work and oh my...she was not helpfull at all instead she was so defensive and saying that it worked "people who checked out a previous day were watching it".

The place needs proper management and staff needs to be trained. I wouldn't advise people to stay there, myself I will never go there even if i'm stranded, i'll rather sleep in my car.

It was a new yet rewarding experience to stay at this guest house. The owner was very helpful on the first day. He had guided me with directions as to find the place i was looking for.The reception Elizabeth was also very supportive through my stay.My stay at the guesthouse had made me realized that things had change for the better in our beautiful country.I experience a sense of unity amongst staff and the visitors to the guesthouse which i felt good and proud about.
