Established in 1998, Irene Country Lodge, Autograph Collection® was built with the vision of providing visitors with an AUTHENTIC FARM experience in a modern elegant urban facility. The owners envisaged a haven of peace and tranquillity in the midst of the city where their love for farming could be shared. What began as a small boutique hotel in the meadows has grown into a countryside experience as additions to the property such as the Camdeboo Day Spa have been done in keeping with the overall farm feel.

Fantastic hotel and stay. Beautiful, large and stylish rooms. Set around a lake. Food lovely in excellent restaurant setting. Contemporary and comfortable. A special experience. Good lakeside walks where we observed many birds. Wish we could have stayed longer.

I am traveling to Johannesburg for business and have Bonvoy Gold Elite status. Apparently that did not mean much because even though my executive assistant confirmed the reservation the day before, I received a cancellation notice from them while I was in flight. Thinking it was a mistake, I showed up to check in. In fact they had my paperwork but then could not find my reservation and had no explanation other than they are fully booked…totally the worse experience I have had at a Marriott property yet!

The attraction of this hotel is its lakeside bird sanctuary. The rooms are spacious but now dated. Basic things are provided like a safe and tea and coffee making. There is also an iron and board for the traveller. Limited toiletries of poor quality. The lakeside walk is worth a 15 to 20 minute walk round. We would call this a good one night passing through place. The only facilities to dine appear to be at the hotel. We need to make a special mention on the staff. At the bar the bartenders had an attitude of you are only here one night. He was unpleasant and edging on rude. We found most, but not all, staff to have the same unhappy customers service attitude and charisma bypass or lacked customer training.

The setting and location are second to none. Fantastic breakfast overlooking the lake, rooms are superb with great facilities, high standard of cleanliness. The only criticism is that the duvets are heavy and make for an uncomfortable night. Just a small thing though. Didn’t want to leave, would highly recommend.

I booked the Romantic Pamper Getaway for myself for 28-29 December. The booking went smoothly, thank you to Elizabeth in this regard. I booked and paid extra for a picnic lunch on 28 December and specified that I was vegetarian. We arrived at the Lodge and checked in – the process went smoothly. We were asked to choose a spot for our picnic so that they could set up for us. We chose a spot and the blanket and cushions were placed there and we were given the picnic basket which contain a number of boxes each with different food in them. When we unpacked the picnic – the main part of the meal consisted of two chicken rolls, two chicken kebabs and a salmon trout wrap – there was no vegetarian option. There were 2 fruit kebabs, dried fruit in a container with the nuts and biltong, cheeses and four (4) biscuits to eat with the cheeses and two boxes containing a variety of sweet treats. We went for a walk around the lake and discovered a dying duck lying in the flower bed. My friend went back to the restaurant and informed a female manager who initially laughed at him. When he told her he was serious, she mumbled something and walked off. He eventually gave up waiting for any feedback. When we returned to the spot after walking around the dam, the duck was still flaying about in the flower bed. He informed one of the male managers in the restaurant who said he would get someone from maintenance to attend to it. Our room was lovely despite smelling of cigarette smoke when the door was closed, as a result we left the door and windows open whenever we were in the room except when we were sleeping. We had booked for the gin and milkshake experience – I received three mini milkshakes – a peppermint crisp one, a banana one and a chocolate one. The banana one really should have been made with real banana and the chocolate one was terrible. The gin experience consisted of a waiter placing three bottles of gin on the table and informing my friend that he knew the first two (the pink gin and the standard gin) but he didn’t know the third one (the Rooibos gin). My friend was provided with a glass containing ice and a few pieces of fruit into which a single tot of the pink gin was poured along with the pink tonic. The waiter then disappeared then reappeared some time later and poured the standard gin and blue tonic which he again spilled. By the end of the tasting he had spilled each drink he poured and would disappear and return with a cloth to wipe the table. No serviettes were provided at any stage. Thankfully the view made up for the poor tasting experience which is a misnomer as there is no experience – you are just tasting three gins. The television sound was on and was quite loud and this was competing with loud music that was playing too. Can't understand why is such a peaceful setting. At some stage during the afternoon, we were informed that the dinner was not a buffet but a la carte. As I looked through the menu at dinner time I realised that the dinner menu was the same as the lunch menu I had seen earlier in the day. I was looking forward to a proper meal at dinner time e.g. a vegetarian lasagne or ratatouille not a lunch-type of meal e.g. fish and chips, burger and chips, etc. I also realised that most of the meals contained chilli or a spicy sauce. The napolitana sauce contains chilli here. The quesadilla contained a spicy sauce. When I asked the waitress if I could have a napolitana without chilli, I was informed that I couldn’t. I asked about the quesadilla and she said they could put the sauce on the side but then I wouldn’t have any sauce in the quesadilla. I eat fish/seafood when travelling if there aren’t suitable vegetarian options. At this point, I opted for the calamari as a starter and the fish and chips as a main. Both of these dishes came with chips – the chips were terrible, I don’t know if the oil is old or if the chips had been standing around after being cooked. I left most of the chips I received with the calamari and all of the chips I received with the fish. The calamari was tough. No tartare sauce was served with either dish and we had to ask for lemon wedges. The fish arrived but the flesh looked very strange when I cut into it and it was full of bones. It did not taste appetising and I thought it was undercooked but when I broke off the opposite end of the fish which was crispy, I realised that the fish was off, it smelt terrible. I returned the dish and the waitress asked if I would like something else which I declined. My friend was happy with his steak. I ate the vegetables that accompanied his steak after sending them back to the kitchen to be cooked as they were raw, the carrot was as hard as a raw carrot and the baby marrow was obviously raw, these were accompanied by raw peppers. It was barely cooked when it returned. We declined dessert. We were informed that there was a limit of R590 on the package at dinner time but indicated that we were happy to pay more, although I’m glad we didn’t as the food was definitely not worth it. The food was expensive and definitely not what you would expect at a 5-star hotel. The duck had died in the meantime but was still lying in the flower bed – we checked after dinner. The romantic turndown in the room was lovely. The room was quiet and dark and we slept well. Breakfast was average definitely not a 5-star offering. Thankfully the view made up for it although playing loud Christmas music on a continuous loop in such a tranquil setting is ridiculous. The dead duck was still lying in the flower bed. Thankfully, the spa saved the visit for us. We had a lovely massage in a peaceful setting and swam in the pool afterwards. I would not recommend this hotel, it is definitely not a 5-star offering. The spa is excellent though. Stay elsewhere and visit the spa. The staff are mostly friendly and helpful and the location is amazing but they are sorely let down by your food offering. If you decide to stay here, eat lunch at the Dairy across the road as the food there is so very good and eat dinner elsewhere too. Maybe at one of the restaurants at Southdowns or Irene Link Shopping Centres or the Bistro in Irene Village.

We have spent a few days here before heading to safari tomorrow. The lodge is beautiful. We had 2 lovely spacious rooms with lake views and the accessible room was great for my sons needs. We arrived to a lovely treat gift and letter for my son (who we have brought to Africa for his wish trip) The staff are all really friendly and helpful. The food in the restaurant is really good and good prices. The grounds are beautiful and its really peaceful, which is just what we needed. The spa was lovely I had a full body massage that really relaxed me and helped get rid of all my aches. We will definitely be visiting again and spending longer. Thank you to all the staff that made our stay special.

I stay in the area but was hosted at the Lodge for a work trip where we all stayed at the same venue. It was an excellent experience – and I have to say, I wouldn’t mind taking a holiday there even though I live in the area! The staff were friendly, helpful and in good spirits. The room was large, tastefully decorated and had very thoughtful, useful touches for visitors. Clean, comfortable (especially the bed) and with every amenity I would want. The restaurant food was excellent and the gardens and pond were lovely. Overall, I would highly recommend this venue.

We stayed 2 nights at the lodge after a long flight. The rooms are large and well appointed and the staff were very helpful. We asked for an early checkin and they got the room ready by 11am. They also had constant power provided by their own generators

The location of this hotel is beautiful. It is only 25 minutes from Tambo but feels many miles away. Marriott has recently acquired these hotels and this one needs some work. The service and staff was adequate but rooms are dated and tired. Our room had an old dingy AC which did not work. They bought a fan from the 1970’s that was loud and bad to help get air circulation. The weather was pleasant but we could not open the door because there was no net of any kind and it was a ground floor room. The shower stall looked like was curving in. Breakfast was adequate and the grounds are nice for a walk around a nice lake.
