I recently spent a weekend at Hoogland Health Hydro. It was the perfect break from hectic life. They have spring water provided directly via taps throughout the entire space. The light hiking is very well guided. I was able to do close to three hours of hiking per day by joining the morning and afternoon walks. In the spa area, I personally appreciated the combination of dry sauna, steam room and cold plunge pool. The food is wholesome and satisfying. It is a very quiet space - no one is on their phone. The staff are awesome and the guests are chill and respectful of each other. I loved the experience and will be back again if I have an opportunity.

A 70's charm when things were built to last. Rustic and comforting like a grandparent's house. Things might look a little old, but they work. You can concentrate on what matters - you - with little distraction. An emphasis of quality over quantity is found within and out of the Hydro. Find a pause in a world that glorifies busy.

A good friend treated me to 2-day, overnight stay at Hoogland, she is a regular guest. We were warmly welcomed and looked after throughout.

I'd not expected to find such a beautiful location within an hour's drive from Sandton. The decor is dated but felt authentic, much rather that than a venue where one feels as though you need to look a certain way to walk through the door! The hydro facilities are well maintained, food is nourishing and plentiful, I bought some of the spring water home.

Felt thoroughly relaxed after 24-hours, hope to visit again soon.

I took 14 of my best staff members to Hoogland as a reward for all their commitment and dedication to the company. My team screamed with excitement when we arrived. The venue is absolutely amazing and my team members all enjoyed their stay immensely.
We felt like part of the family and I will definately recommend Hoogland to anyone who want to get pampered and enjoy nature.
Well done team.

Just the tonic one needs to escape the stress and craziness of the city and because of its close proximity to both Joburg and Pretoria it is all so easy. The setting is magical and the staff are friendly and accommodating without being overbearing. It is a great place to just chill and very down to earth....the walks in the mountains and the views are spectacular! The general game is a real bonus too.

There is plenty on offer with regard the spa treatments, hydro centre, exercise options, informative talks and more, but if you choose to do absolutely nothing except soak up the tranquil surroundings and let go....its equally as good.

The fact that it is a family run business adds to the experience and the genuine charm and the sincerity of their service and care. Thanks for an awesome stay ....I will be back.

There is a lot to be said about family run businesses, in this instance it is the perfect solution, from Annette's wonderful assistance with the reservation to Greg collecting me at the Gautrain, and Monica introduction and constant smiling face at all times of the day, to Dr Andrea attention to hospitality and the watchful medical eye, who explained in no uncertain detain why my watch should be removed and preferably not used again, to the wonderfully logical non prescribed eating times, let your body choose the time.
The estate with its three labyrinths a litt,le game, great staff and with a wonderful array of “water time” from a number of Jacuzzis to pools and my favourite "James Bond box steamers"
The talks and treatments were of an incredibly high standard and I will most defiantly travel from Cape Town many more times, the Kruger family have got it 100%.

Used to go to the hydro in the 1990's and back for the first time now in 2018. Nothing has changed - service and hydro and the rest as good as ever - food lovely and healthy and talks and activities fun and interesting. Unfortunately the rooms did not change either and still looks like it did in 1970 probably. Stunning place - but needs revamping without increasing the price too much - if at all possible. It is already an expensive outing!

I cannot fault the health treatments & hydro facilities at the Hoogland Health Hydro, however I was disappointed with the accommodation. The rooms were incredibly tired & the building in general had the feel that it was in desperate need of attention. I had to move rooms 3 times, as the 2 of the rooms I was shown were leaking, with water dripping onto the bed. The female member of staff at the front desk tried to lie & tell me that there were no alternative rooms, despite one of the therapists telling me that they were less than 50% full that weekend. I assume that this was because she couldn't be bothered to find me another room for the night. I found this disappointing, as the hotel advises that one's environment is essential for relaxation & de-stressing. Not sure how I was meant to sleep properly in a room where the bed had been soaked from a leak. The 2nd room I was shown had wires hanging out of the ceiling where the lights had been removed, & the 3rd room was also leaking. Also rather disappointing was the fact that you had to bring your own spa dressing-gown. This is obviously so the hotel can save money on laundering, but it meant that you were stuck with a soaking wet dressing gown for most of the weekend which wasn't very pleasant.

However, the massages etc were good. Despite this, I wouldn't return, as a spa weekend is just as much about the accommodation as the therepies if you really want to relax & this spa doesn't look like it's had any attention since the 1970s.

Response from Monia V, Manager at Hoogland Health Hydro
Responded 07 Jul 2014
Good Day Thank you for taking the time to write. Hoogland is much more than a spa, and we pride ourselves in this. My grandfather built the building, and it is not very modern or upmarket. It is homely and comfortable, and the sprawling space allows it to never feel crowded, even when we are full, one of the many beautiful aspects of the building and huge grounds surrounding it. It has been bothering me since reading your comments that your experience was tainted not only by the room, but also because of your perception. We were fully booked other than 2 of our single rooms which were under renovation at the time. I think there might have been a misunderstanding with the therapists as our average occupancy over the past year was just over 50% (steadily increasing), but during your stay, we were practically full. It was as disappointing to us that the roof of your room was leaking, as we had waterproofing touched up just before the rainy season, but I remember going to Sandton City and the floors even there pooled with water as the rain was heavier and more persistent than what we couple possibly be prepared for. We only had one of the single rooms available which was being renovated, and this was the one where some of the light fittings had been removed. There were no live wires though, and plenty of other lights. I believe that we explained this to you as best we could, and there was certainly no attempt from our side to lie to you, only to make the best out of a not-so-perfect situation in as little time as possible with as little disruption to your stay as possible. The bedroom, although very important, is after-all is a very small part of the whole experience at Hoogland. If you think back on your time with us, knowing now that we were genuinely fully booked and could not accommodate you in any other way, I hope you will see the experience in a new light. We are also continually busy with updating and upgrading the accommodation, a never-ending process of creating a homely, caring and healing environment in our beautiful Schurveburg hills. Regards, A. Kruger MD, Hoogland Health Hydro
