Response from Paul Hartley, Owner at Hartley Manor Guest House
Responded 3 weeks ago
We have had extremely hot weather which has been ideal for the breeding cycle of mosquitoes which seem to breed overnight. In the past fans have played an important way of control but alas.....they need Eskom power and recently this has been very unreliable to the point we have installed a solar back up unit to help cover the load shedding times which are compounded by the power outs in the area. Unfortunately, the solar installation that was installed has the second 5kw battery which was paid for and not delivered 2 months ago still in the container from China which is held up on the ship outside Durban. It never rains but it pours! AWA ! Africa wins again but we are positive the matter will be solved very shortly.....with the additional battery on its way! We did give the rooms a spray with mosquito repellent before the guests arrived but it seems it was only short-term effective. We have now placed cannisters in the rooms. As for the stained sheet, laundry is done by an outside laundry service. This was all explained to the visitor who, apparently lives in the Netherlands. It is a self-catering unit. In Africa, mosquito repellant is part of one's survival kit but we will address all these issues and we have a plan to live without Eskom like the rest of Africa. We are no longer a first world country but still well worth visiting for the adventure.

If it wasn't for the load shedding (which our hosts have no control over), I don't think we could have had a better stay anywhere else. It was comfortable & peaceful and the gardens are absolutely beautiful. Thank you Hartley Manor!

One of our worst ever experiences! An absolutely filthy and disgusting stay - I blame myself for not doing more homework on this place. Filthy to say the least, mediocre check-in facilities. No towels in the rooms, with bedding just dumped on the floor of the wardrobe. The poor onsite gentleman is the receptionist, cleaner and the chef - no fault of his own, but has no understanding of guest treatment!

Response from Paul Hartley, Owner at Hartley Manor Guest House

It is hard to respond to such an attack......cannot understand there being no towels and extra blankets are placed in the cupboards in case they are needed. We bring in staff from the area as and when needed.

Had a pleasant stay. Value for money however could be much better. No milk in room at the price one is paying should be inclusive. Shower head could be better. No lighting available during load shedding. In general at the price there could be more value.

Some of the staff did not turn up for work so the owner himself served us breakfast. He introduced himself as Nick and explained how he started his business and what the surrounding area had to offer.

Owner / staff are helpful and friendly. The rooms were crummy, and linen not cleaned. I'm sure if rooms are cleaned properly and checked, that they would have noticed the old blood I had on my linen (picture attached) The pillows could definitely also use an upgrade, as they worn and very uncomfortable. . There was a power outage on the premise from late afternoon, right through the evening, until we left the next morning. No communication or information provided as so why or when we can expect to have power again. It was not due to loadshedding, as the whole area outside of the farm had power. Needless to say, it was extremely hot in the rooms. Fan obviously didn't work, so we opened a window for air. We were attacked by an army of mosquitoes. The bug spray would have killed us before it will make any difference to the little buggers keeping us awake and aware of the heat. There was a candle, but not matches or lighter to light, so we couldn't make our way around the room. Phone batteries were drained. We left as early as possible, so missed the breakfast and cannot comment on that. All and all, I just think that the rooms are definitely not worth the price.

Very beautiful property situated in a very quiet area - beautiful garden with lots of birds. Very friendly and helpful owner. We loved our stay there. Two suggestions: Filter coffee at breakfast and ask the customers what they want for breakfast instead of dishing everything as everybody does not eat everything.
