Cradle Moon Lakeside Game Lodge is the resurrection of the previously beloved Heia Safari Lodge, founded in the 1970’s and the brain child of the dogmatic Franz Richter, which, after his demise, unfortunately fell into difficult times. Under the new ownership of Andy Dott and Kelvin van Niekerk, this spectacular hidden gem set under the Zwartkop mountain, is now being restored to achieve its’ full potential as the most sort after eco activity hospitality destination within the urban edge of Johannesburg. Although major renovations are taking place, care has been given not to alter the unique nuances of the original character. Set within the 1500 hectare Cradle Moon Conservancy, all owned and controlled by a handful of like-minded landowners, we are able to offer a secure and pristine natural experience for both young and old as well as both the ultimate athletes or those just seeking a breath of fresh air.

So, after having an amazing 5km run, we decided to go to the current restaurant where they served us cold tortilla wraps, which took about 45 minutes to arrive. Not everything on the menu was there. The restaurant was run by one waiter.

Beautiful, serene lake. Hiking tracks are marked well. The 10km track that we did was lovely. Nice views, Zebras & Impala's greeted us, we saw the giraffes when driving out. Definitely worth coming back for more.

What was expected to be an amazing birthday celebration for my husband with our friends and family turned into a disaster , with absolutely no compassion or consideration . We arrived to a dim and dingy venue which looked like a step back to the 80s and not in a good retro way ! On arrival at 1pm there were many empty tables which looked like they had not been reset from breakfast or maybe the first lunch seating . Our booking could not be found for the party of 10 including 4 young children , leaving my party in panic and set us off to a bad start . A table was quickly set whilst I found the confirmed booking via email . I was also told that we could not sit outside as the monkeys steal the food off the tables . Once seated 3 old dirty menus were placed on the table and eventually after requesting numerous times our drinks order were taken . 45 minutes and drinks were served - well some of them . Finally after staring at the menus and watching the restaurant full up whilst trying to place our food order we were told that many items were no longer available in the menu ( thanks for advising us on arrival ) Food order placed hooray but after 2 hours still no food had come to the table , but what did come to the table was the poor waiter to share with us the bad news that some of our orders would not be fulfilled as they had run out of our second choices . By that stage we were all very hangry . Some guests left without eating , I left with the kids who were so passed being hungry to go and hopefully pass some time on the canoes at the river . We changed into costumes put on our cream, stood in a queue and were then told at the water sports were closed as there were hippos in the water at that time . Really ???? . The staff member also told us that the owner doesn’t care about the safety of the clients or invest any money into equipment . Their boat seats 15 people or so yet they only have 8 life jackets . Yikes . Upon leaving the river we were called to say that lunch had arrived . That would be a total of over 3 hours from when we placed the original order . And the most shocking thing is that we received a completely underwhelming half hearted sorry from the so called manager ( if you could call her that ) and hardly any compensation or feel good factor . And then we still had to pay a R50 fee on exit for the Reserve facilities fee which no one reminds you to pay on leaving so you drive all the way to the exit gate to be told you have to drive back in and pay your fee . What an absolute disgrace of a place .I just feel sorry for the staff who seem to be very unhappy and feel the same way about this venue and restaurant : This officially gets my “kak” stamp !

It is actually with great sadness that I write this review. As a group we come together once a year to celebrate the birthday of our great friend. He always makes the day an 'event' for all of us. Researching, booking the entertainment / venue to make sure that all his guests are happy, and we can enjoy the time together. This year we spent the evening at Cradle Moon Lakeside Game Lodge. Upon arrival I was treated with disdain, arrogance, ignorance and lack of professionalism by the lady at reception. Sending me to two different directions because she didn't know and could not be bothered to figure out where our event was booked. Taken aback, I decided to visit onsite 'Deli'. The sign on the door clearly indicated 'Open'. When I entered, the cashier asked me to leave, since he was in the process of 'cashing up' for the day and I was intruding. Disturbed, I left deciding to wait outside until the rest our party arrived. When we finally left on our game drive, where we booked two full vehicles for a 'night-time' game drive. Our guide proceeded to tell us we have selected the worst possible time to take a game drive since we are not going to see any animals. 'Great' selling point. Our second vehicle did not even have a torch to shine a light on the animals for the other half of our party. This is by far the worst customer service experience I have ever had. Do not support Cradle Moon, unless of course you want to feel like you are doing them a favour by parting with your hard-earned money, since they clearly don't need the business if my experience is how they normally treat their guests. There are many other lodges in the same area that provide superb service.

We stayed at Cradle Moon Lodge for 6 nights and thought that is was fabulous. The game reserve does not have any predators which means the animals are free to roam and some come right up to your hut as they graze. The lodge runs a game drive in which we were able to rhino, zebra, giraffe, warthogs, wildebeest, ostrich and impala. The setting on the lake is beautiful and tranquil. The restaurants are great and the staff very friendly and helpful. Thanks for a most memorable week.

I cannot understand any of the bad reviews! The service is outstanding. Food at both restaurants is absolutely excellent. Rooms dated, but clean with large and comfy beds. Separate room for kids in the family chalet. We loved our stay so much and can’t wait to go back.

We held a small memorial for my brother at the venue, and my partner and I stayed the night. From the get-go, the arrangements were wonderfully handled by Marleen. She understood our needs and was amazing about considering our budget. We were given the Zebra Room for the 'formalities' and tables were blocked off for us on the patio for afterwards. I travelled from Cape Town so had not seen the venue myself. When I realised how far the bar was from the room, staff jumped to our assistance instantly and brought in a table, drinks and ice buckets. The platters ordered for the deck were delectable and service there equally impressive. I had asked to be given a heads-up on the bar bill as the evening wore on to decide whether I would have to move it to own tabs, and I was (and I didn't need to). Our rondavel was exceptionally comfy and our late arrival for the buffet breakfast did not faze staff. We were allowed to order off the menu as part of our B&B charge. The final bill, including gratuity (though we tipped the serving and bar staff cash as well) was less than I had expected. It's a lovely venue, and understandably busy on weekends, but that did not intrude on our enjoyment. It seems a fabulous place for families and celebrations, with lots of activities on offer and a beautiful lake. Sadly, we did not see any wildlife up close (I think the noise levels were a bit high at the time) but certainly many tracks and we did disturb a herd of something walking back to our room in the dark. I would highly recommend the entire venue. Thank you to all at Cradle Moon for your incredible attention and kindness. My brother would have thought it the perfect spot for his farewell.

This is by far my favourite hiking spot! Fun and doable hike. The trail is also kids friendly. Friendly restaurant staff, the food is great. Plus there's an option to sit outdoors, beach vibes... Everything is about the place is a vibe. However, the drinks menu can be improved.
