More of a conference venue/wedding venue on a big compound. Many smaller buildings for different purposes with lots of parking. I was surprised the room was actually great for me, and very spacious, but my friends got smaller rooms. High level of security. Reception staff/management was very poor, they had no clue how to handle a group of 100 foreign guests. Food was average, but I have to say that I ate the best Malva Pudding ever in this hotel! Nothing next door to this hotel, but Mall of Africa is like 15mins by car. Buildings which are 3 floors have no lift, so I had to drag my suitcase up. My biggest drawback is that rooms have doors with space which allows noise from the corridor to come in. Hotel was good, but some staff are lazy.

I stayed at the new oxford house building of midrand convention centre which they call boutique hotel and charge premium. Rooms are white and spacious, but toilets quite small in some rooms (changed room so i know).

But the rooms in oxford house have no room service, no phone, no generator. During 5 days stay, for two days there was no power after 9 pm for two hours.

Hotel reception is based in old antique style building accross the garden. They are not connected by intercom with new building and had no clue that there is no light in oxford building. Had to call from my mobile as there is no intercom phone inside the room.

Parking space is adequate with nice garden. Good for evening walk, as outside its very deserted.

Staff is otherwise good rather innocent, but you dont get that hotel type feeling even after paying R1100/- per day tariff.

Dear GauravG1583 Thank you for your review. We have come under new management and much is being done to uplift our standards. So for example you will be pleased to know that Oxford House now is linked to a generator so if Eskom has outages Oxford House is not affected. This applies to all the guest rooms, venues, dining venues, restaurant, reception and kitchens Kind regards Kaylene

At our arrival it was clear we made a mistake, and although close to Gallagher Estate... Do not let that be the reason you book here. The first room 2e received was so small and had no window... O ja And do not let them tell you there is different rooms with different rates.... Let them tell you what you booked. Then we were told that the water will be cut off the next morning at 6 due to water restrictions.... Not their problem I know but what is their continuing plan going forward. The first night was impossible to sleep... The noise of people arriving and leaving their rooms was unbearable. On afternoon I had to walk onto the hall and request people to lower their voices. The first morning waking up before 6 not to be the one not to get water.... We got a bigger surprise... There was water but no hit water. We called the front desk and was told maintenance will check it. No hope. We went for breakfast and the tables were not cleared quick enough and no cutlery was on the tables. The flies were sitting g on the food and everything was covered in oil. The second night was even worse..... There was a horrendous noise from pipes in the middle of the night for hours.... I am done this place will never see me again and I will never recommend them even if they were walking distance from the venue. The place is old and needs a fix up as well.

Dear Caron Thank you for your review. I am sorry you didn't let reception know that people were being noisy. We have 136 rooms and could easily have moved you to a quieter room. Moreover we do have a brand new boutique hotel on the property and new guest houses so could so easily have accommodated your requirements. I am sorry you experienced our beautiful village when our entire area was suddenly hit with water shortages however the good news is, Jojo tanks are being installed so this problem doesn't hinder us as it did when you were with us. We have taken your comments very seriously and addressed your concerns Kind regards Kaylene

The check in process was very simple with super friendly staff. One guy stood out for me his name is "Essential" he went out of his way to ensure that our stay was comfortable. The rooms were fairly clean and had a nice mini bar fridge.

The downside was that they didn't have microwave ovens in the rooms, Essential sorted us out through the restaurant. The wifi login tends to be troublesome, I'd prefer they improve on that or find a simpler way to secure it and still allow flawless connecting.

I loved the gardens and the set up of the houses. The rooms were very clean and cozy. Essential was of great help every time when we had questions. The beds are comfy and the gym had everything I needed. The food was also of great value. I had a wonderful stay.

Staff that have no manners or hospitality training... Difficult check in. A 'welcome' letter that detailed more 'fines' for breaking the rules than an average prison... Horrible room with complimentary water that was opened and half drunk. TV that was mounted at a neck breaking height. Dirty bathroom, Intoxicated guests running riot and partying in the car park (Sunday afternoon). Totally unwelcoming environment and a complete maze of disparate half finished buildings and clutter... Not what I needed after a 10 hour flight.... Just awful...

Dear Steve M, Thank you for taking the time to share your review! I'm sorry to hear that your experience at our property didn't meet your expectations. Your concerns have been raised with the management team and have been investigated. We have adjusted our processes to ensure our guests check-in experience is improved. We have also addressed the housekeeping processes to ensure that all our rooms are clean and ready when our guests arrive. While we do our utmost best to ensure that all our guests enjoy the facilities available, sometimes, our guests behavior is out of our control. Saying this, our security has increased on busy days to try and control any unruly guests. Kind regards, Collette

We stayed in this hotel the first and the last day of our holiday. By the name I thought to find an Italian atmosphere. However, the whole place is decorated with Thai element. This can work, exept that the white lights in the bedrooms are awefull and not cosy at all. It all felt really strange. Maybxe it is better to stick to one continent. The rooms where clean and the beds where good. But on our last night we had only one pair of towels in stead of two pairs. The first evening we could order dinner. But only 4 dishes out of 10 could be prepared. We chose a beef lasagne. This ''thing'' covered half a plate and looked like a pancake. It even didn't taste like lasagne. The restaurant was a room next to the reception witch had the same white lights as the bedrooms had. I felt like having dinner in a dungeon! We could not go to our room fast enough and go to sleep. Hoping the next morning would be better. Breakfast was served in the same dungeon. They have a wonderfull coffeemachine, but they dou not use it. Breakfast was ok, but nothing more than that. The last evening we spent there was really terrible. I would not eat there any more, but because we where so tired, we decided to give them an other chance. Again we sat in the dungeon. There was a little buffet but we had to eat a la carte. We both liked a beef curry, but we could only get the cicken curry. We asked for 2 glasses of red wine, but there were no more open bottles. So we could thake a whole bottle or some white wine. We asked for 2 dry white wines, but the waitress than came back to tell us there was only a sweet rose. After 30 minutes we finally got our drinks. A beer and a Savannah. Why can costumers don't get what the order just because there are no more open bottles. Can't anyone open a simple winebottle? Then the curry was served. The waitress came in with 2 ice cold plates with curry and rice covered with freshcling film. She did not even bother to take it of in the kitchen! Our dinner was cold and tasted like nothing.
The next morning we had breakfast in a beautiful room with big round tables that can seat up to 10 people. Also not really cosy when you are sitting there with only 2.
Maybe it would be a lot better if they would run only one restaurant for the whole establishment and try to run it like it should be! Next time we will look for an other place to spent the night.

Dear Nijlen I have read your comments very carefully and yes you are right we do have beautiful dining halls. Here is my considered response to your observations 1. Midrand Conference Centre is a village of venues and guest houses and whilst some are in the Thai style, others are indeed Italian in theme and inspiration. I am sorry you didn't get a chance to explore our 10 acre garden village 2. I regret that you didn't mention your feelings about the rooms assigned to you whilst you were staying with us, as we have such a choice that you may well have found something more to your liking 3. I took all your comments about the Bistro very seriously and immediately took action. For example, as an interim measure we revamped the menu and stock control. A more senior chef was hired to supervise the kitchen and our clients have been enjoying the Bistro food since then. In terms of the decor, your comments were well made and we called in an interior designer. And currently we are in the midsts of renovating the Bistro in totality. I think you will be pleasantly surprised when we launch our new restaurant. The menu is also undergo another transformation for the launch I do hope we will have the opportunity to welcome you back one day and show you what we have been busy with. In the meantime, I thank you profoundly for taking the time to write about your experience. Kind regards Kaylene

The room was dirty, tiles broken and not enough bedding to keep me warm on a winters night. Used toothpicks and used floss was outside my door. Poor restaurant, cold food and no 2 point plugs available. I had to buy a 2 point adapter to charge my phone for R100 at reception. Really disappointing stay.

Hi Our brides, their families and guests all agree with you that Midrand Conference Centre is a beautiful venue for a wedding and they usually give us the highest accolades for service, and food taste and presentation for our weddings. Yours is one of the first exceptions we have had. I do want you to know that a review like yours is as important to us as the many rave reviews we get for our weddings As you know we have addressed your concerns directly with you as soon as we knew you weren't happy and have outlined our response below *It is industry standard that all weddings have to be paid for prior to the wedding *Your six wedding guests did in fact eat as witnessed by our senior management *Back up food was made and was available to bring out as required during each course, but it wasn't needed. *We understand you were disappointed with the dessert and have improved the recipe I am sorry that you were not happy as we strive to continually uplift the quality of our services. I wish you all the happiness and only the best in your married life Kind regards Kaylene

I was invited as a guest speaker to a conference at the Midrand Conference Centre. I had to spend the night at the venue prior to the conference to allow for an early start. First impressions were poor. We were asked at the gate to drive through the venue to the opposite end where the lodge is. The route does not inspire confidence. Behind buildings, part staff areas, and generally dilapidated buildings....
A pub greeted us at reception. Now generally this is good right? Not here! The pub is right there in reception and the movement of people in and out of the pub disturbs the professionalism of reception. Completely impractical!
The room was the the real joke. In a Tuscan style building decorated with Chinese artifacts and strange paintings. The bathroom had mold on the walls, the extractor fan was so load in the bathroom I couldn't hear myself think. The lack of Windows did not do the moldy odour any favours.
Breakfast! Another joke! Two large tables set for breakfast. So basically you find a seat amongst strangers and request their permission to join their party. Huh?
Seriously? No professionalism here. No thanks!!

Dear HeinDG, Thank you for sharing your review! We're sorry to hear that your first impressions of our venue were poor. Our property not only accommodates conferencing, events and stay over guests but our adjacent property (the area you drove past) is home to our long term guests, rather than staff. Our bar area is indeed in our reception area and we have found that many of our guests enjoy the convenience while waiting to be checked into their rooms or to conduct informal meetings. The concerns you have raised about the mold and extractor fan in your bathroom have been addressed and corrected with our housekeeping and maintenance departments. Thank you so much for raising this. Unfortunately, the decor in our rooms is not to everyone's taste. We do however, have 8 guesthouses and a boutique hotel on our property that over various decor and room options. We encourage our guests to share their special requirements and requests with us when making their reservation so that we can take this into consideration when allocating the rooms. With regards to your food experience with us, we have addressed this with our chef and a number of changes to our breakfast menu and set up have been implemented. We do hope that you will return and share your experience with on-site management team so that we can understand our guests individual requirements better. Kind regards, Collette
