Very nice boutique hotel in Johannesburg, few rooms make you feeling the only guest, and rooms are filled with all nice details to make them each different. Dining is superb, with internal kitchen and chef, only slightly slow at breakfast during peak hour. Very quiet and safe, continently close to the international airport

We finally could travel back to South Africa again and opted to stay in African Rock Hotel again. The food was superb as usual, one of the reasons why we like the place. For the first time we tried their massage facilities and boy did I feel good afterwards, should have done this the other times we were there. I spoke to the manager and heard he's building 2 extra family rooms, It was good to be back, starts feeling like visiting friends.

This is a wonderful hotel. The accommodations are top notch. The best part of the stay, however, is the restaurant. The food and wine are absolutely magnificent. We were there on 2 different occasions, once for 2 nights and then later for 1. At the first, I asked about local gins, which the bar did not have. But when we returned, she had obtained a wonderful local gin for me; an example of the personal attention. This hotel, as others have said, is a long ways from Johannesburg. If you are staying in the city for several days, you may not like the location. If you are just stopping off here or, as we did, staying for just 2 nights, this is a perfect place. Highly recommended. And don't dare think of eating anywhere else!

Hi there Aubrey, Thank you so much for the nice review, it means a lot to us all here. I am glad you enjoyed your stay with us and wish you many more happy and safe travels where ever they take you! At the moment our country is in lock-down due to Covid-19 thus the hotel is empty and closed. Crazy times but we will get through them and are looking forward to welcoming our guests again! Stay safe! Otti

We haven’t even checked out yet and just so thrilled with African Rock Hotel. It’s the perfect small boutique hotel with just 11 rooms. It’s just so cute with lovely rooms/bathrooms, and special amenities to enjoy. There is a quiet area upstairs with a computer, lovely pool in a garden, and the food is so delicious. The airport pickup was perfect, which is so appreciative. Please don’t miss this little gem with such nice people who really care. Will definitely return.

We stayed here for two wonderful nights after a two week safari in Botswana. We chose this place based on its convenient location from JB airport & their great TA reviews.
We stayed in room 1, a spacious suite on the ground floor, off their tranquil garden.
Comfortable & stylish, just what you would expect in a top SA hotel.
The service throughout was first class, the food was excellent & we felt safe & relaxed.
Late check out was greatly appreciated too. Would gladly stay here again. Thank you.

The beauty of this hotel lies in its grounds and its cuisine. In fact, I was a little put off by the cramped dining area and definitely by the gray carpet and somewhat tacky furnishings of Room 1 when we arrived at night. The next morning, I changed my tune. The gardens are thickly lush and well-tended. The outdoor tables are comfortable and, at dinner, a lovely fire crackled.

We actually felt like we had a private chef since the only other couple ate early before an international flight. We stopped by the homey kitchen to discuss her recommendations. My extremely tender springbok was from a local farm. The veggies were perfect as was the sauce. Dessert was delicious. My husband enjoyed his fish, not at all overcooked as can happen, and the papaya salsa served with it.

In the morning the lattes were excellent and my husband pronounced the everything omelette the best he’d ever eaten.

Not least, Dineo, the driver helped us with a pharmacy and optician in a very proactive, professional and persistent way. She’s a gem.

Hi there, Thank you for taking the time to write a review! I am glad your feelings flipped for the better. :) Just to add to your comments. Our dining areas are sufficient in size for our 11 suites and seat 30 patrons comfortably. The gray carpet is just that, grey with a speckle as part of the interior design. The tacky thing, you must have gotten from the deliberately distressed look as an interior design feature achieved by a specialized paint technic. Dineo is always happy to be of service and will help wherever she can. We are glad you enjoyed your stay with us and wish you many more happy travels. Best, the team at ARH.

Lovely small hotel with great service. The gardens make you feel a million miles away, the open fire takes the chill off in the evening.
Very well decorated with some original art works
Would definitely stay again thank you.

We only stayed for one night as a stop over but again a very good hotel.

We ended up here by happenstance after a missed flight connection to Botswana and could not have felt more lucky. The hotel is charming and cozy and very well appointed - lovely bedding and furnishings and extremely warm and welcoming staff. It is safely tucked into a gated community so one can even go for a jog. They quickly arranged a guide to allow us to make the most of our bonus day in Johannesburg and see the Apartheid Museum - which is a truly memorable, moving and educational experience. Calvin took good care of us and helped to really give us a sense of South Africa in our short time there. Dinner back at the hotel at the Blue Hippo restaurant with Chef Timothy was wonderfully good - excellent food with great service at a lovely table by the pool in front of a roaring fire place. A perfect first dinner on our trip. Breakfast the next morning was very very good, and a ride back to the airport was arranged to put us back on our way. All of us were glad for the unexpected layover and would build in another stop here on our way to the Okavango Delta if we are lucky enough to return this way.

This lovely boutique hotel within close proximity to the airport has a true african heritage and beautifully decorated.

The rooms are spacious, comfortable and has authentic african decor.

There is a spa, relaxing lounge area, outside patio area and great pool all surrounded by beautiful gardens and lush greenery.

The cuisine was great and the service was very good.

Overall, I highly recommend this boutique hotel to all travellers.

Just a wonderful place to stay! Very nice Spa, great food , special gift shop, extremely helpful and warm and friendly staff. We were only there one night , but will return again. We would choose to stay there instead of the airport hotel, it’s convenient and they offer a free shuttle.
