This place was almost empty except for some locals. Which was ok, except that the owner was very difficult to have a conversation with as he's one of those people who always knows better than you.

Otherwise, it's got a good location, near to the shops, and probably one of the safer areas in Johannesburg.

Thank you Tim Derek and Mike for a wonderful stay at your Lodge. The Kruger walking Safari and the Delta and Vic Falls where awesome. Friday night Braai (BBQ) where the best. I found Zoo Lodge to be very centrally located with taxis and bus routes avaiable on the road outside the lodge. Thanks again and keep it up.

I was here three years ago before this last trip to Johannesburg. A lot is the same, but some things are different. The same old same old is that there's no way to let yourself in and out; you have to ring the bell outside to get in (not there on my first trip so an improvement at least) or find someone with keys inside to let you out which is a bit annoying but not too bad. Also the same is that it's quite cluttered in spaces inside, and there is no working bar although websites would make you think there was. It does appear that many years ago there were two, however, but now there aarejust the physical bars themselves, their emptiness a reflection of the hostel's own mood.

New this time was the missing programs. Last time I was here the owner had a schedule of local activities such as tours and other things not ran by the hostel, and he made new guests keenly aware of these options with assistance to arrive at the starting points even. Now I was not told about anything, and the desk that once held pamphlets and brouchures was empty with only the sign stating where it once was.

The lack of activities was more a lack of a positive than a negative, but a huge negative for me this time was how a) they could not give me proper change (giving it to me later the first day and not at all the second) and b) one of the employees actually asked me to loan him money. I did so in good faith, but I knew I wouldn't be getting it back. The amount of money I lost in this was insignificant, but I am more disturbed by the lack of professionalism and basic respect for guests as far as this goes.

Overall, this hostel is far from great. It is a place to sleep, and not too far from the Gautrain station. I would wholly recommend one to just stay in the CBD instead, but if you would like to stay in the 'burbs, I'd advise you go elsewhere.

I am Leonid Blashinov from the Ukraine. I have been travelling around South Africa for the past 2 years. In this time I have spent time at over 100 Backpacking Lodges in South Africa. When I came to Johannesburg I stayed in almost all of the lodges in and around Johannesburg. About 3 weeks ago I came across Africa Zoo Lodge Backpackers and booked a dorm room. The dorms have their own toilets and separate showers en-suite. This is a first for me.This is the best backpacking Lodge in Johannesburg and is as good as any of better lodges I have stayed in in South Africa and far better than most. The lodge is very well located and the staff very friendly and helpful. The lodge has a beautiful back garden with swimming pool and large outside self cater BBQ area and bar.
I have really enjoyed my stay and would highly recommend this Lodge. I really feel at home here.
Well done Derek and staff.

I arrived from Jordan on the 3rd October 2013 and stayed at Africa Zoo Lodge which was recommended to me by a friend in Jordan. The management was very well organized and they did all my day tours and Safaris. I really enjoyed the braai at night. The lodge had a very friendly atmosphere and at the pool and braai area was great. Well done Derek. I will be back

As a senior designer in the engineering field one travels to where the work take you. On a two year contract in Johannesburg, I lived at the Africa Zoo Lodge Backpackers for the first 6 months. The room was a single en suite, always clean & tidy when I came off work. The lodge has a communal kitchen/dining area, a cool bar with a pool table & big screen TV. Outside there’s a swimming pool & bar/entertainment & braai area.

The owner, management & staff were always friendly, helpful & always busy as there were numerous groups & travellers coming & going. As a part time jazz musician I’ve invited various musicians for a jam at the lodge which always turns into a good party.

I’ve been roped-in to help with some of the larger groups too. If the lodge is not doing the braai thing, there’s music or the big screen. I haven’t had so much fun in long time. I’m going to miss all the friends made & travellers met. I will be back!!

I am Mr. S. J. Khumisi, the principle at Kgauhelo Public School and recently took a group of 40 leaners and teachers who stayed at Africa Zoo Lodge for 2 days.

We had a wonderful stay at your lodge. Your hospitality, warmth and welcoming spirit made us feel at home.

You gave us access to your kitchen even though it was not part of the package. The rooms are well kept

I as a principle am a gym fanatic. I had access to the gym training facility at the back of the lodge.

Keep it up.
