One of the first guesthouses to open in the Rosebank Region some 19 years ago, Liz at Lancaster has built a strong reputation based on excellent personal service, great comfort, convenient location, seclusion and privacy. Given recognition for this in 2011 with an AA Accommodation Award for ‘People who go the extra mile’, an AA Accommodation in 2012 for 'Traveller's best value', Liz at Lancaster was also voted a finalist three years in a row in the AA 2010, 2011 & 2012 Accommodation Awards. We are included in Greenwood Guides Handpicked Accommodation. But perhaps most telling of all are our guest comments: ‘We loved the peace and privacy – we didn’t even know there were other guests here.’ ‘Craighall Park is such a central location – under 10 minutes from Rosebank and Melrose Arch and less than 15 minutes to Sandton Central. Even Parktown and Joburg Central are easily accessible – it took us 12 minutes to Wits.’ ‘Superb service and such comfortable spacious rooms’. ‘The on-site transport was a real added bonus.’ ‘Your Joburg information booklet in our room was amazingly helpful and useful.’ It is a mere 12 minute ride from O.R Tambio International Airport to the Rosebank Gautrain Station which is only 3.5 km from Liz at Lancaster. You can either pick up your rental car when you arrive at the station, or phone us for a transfer – a real added convenience. With 7 very private individual units all with separate entrances and kitchenettes offering self-catering options, Liz at Lancaster is ideal for long stays whether for business travelers or for those relocating. Rates drop for weekly and monthly stays. There are 2 standard spacious double rooms (25 & 30 m²), 3 studio flatlets (55 m²), and 2 one-bedroom cottages (80 m²) each with separate living/dining room and open plan kitchen. All lead onto their own enclosed courtyards where you can enjoy your privacy on a warm Highveld summer evening while sipping at a sundowner from your mini-bar. During our chilly Jozi winter months you will be warmly snug with under-carpet heating and electric blankets. All units have shower and bath, ample well-lit work areas/dining tables, separate sitting area, broadband WiFi connection, flat screen TVs and DSTV with own decoders (25 channels), overhead fans, convenient luxuries like hairdryers, toweling gowns, radio clock alarms, luxurious cotton percale linen, a house branded range of natural toiletries and on-the-house E-spring filtered water. Delicious breakfasts are served to order on the breakfast patio which opens out onto the garden in summer and is warmed by a roaring log fire in winter. There is ample secure off-street undercover parking. We offer a same day laundry service and on-site transport at very reasonable rates. All credit cards including Diners and American Express are accepted. Liz and two staff live on site and are always at the other end of the internal intercoms. As Liz taught Art History and Heritage at Wits University for 25 years, she keeps abreast with cultural events and has quite an extensive library. A further bonus of staying at Liz at Lancaster is the convenience of the neighbourhood shops at the end of the block: a 7-7 grocery store, a chemist, restaurant, etc.

Detailed Reviews
We were fortunate to find Liz at Lancaster Guest House. From the moment I made the reservation until our departure, Liz was helpful. She and her staff are capable, kind and knowledgeable. They made our (too short) stay easy and comfortable. We had a late flight from Johannesburg on the day we departed. Liz made it easy to store our luggage so we could change clothes and reorganize before going to the airport. She provided airport pick-up and drop-off.

Thank you Road127941. Your stay WAS very short but I'm just so pleased that it all went off well. The things that you mention are what make for a smooth stress-free visit : direct and immediate contact between you as guest and me as establishment owner/manager; safe and hassle free airport collection and drop-off; value-added conveniences like late check-outs and being able to leave luggage safely. These are things that a photo does not show! And are things that are often overlooked when dealing through a third party booking site. Thank you from all at Liz at Lancaster: Liz, Mr T., Catherine and Thandie

This was a lovely "home from home" guesthouse. Liz and all the staff were very welcoming on our arrival and during our short stay. The room we had was very spacious and clean with a kitchen/dining/lounge area, a large very comfortable bed and a nice little leafy patio area which was great to sit out on an evening and enjoy Liz's house red wine! The breakfasts were excellent and cooked to order. Mr T was a very safe, careful driver on our trips to and from the airport and also for the short journey to Rosebank. Liz has a wealth of information about the area and further afield and this was invaluable to us. Thank you, will see you again in July!

Thank you Gillybopz for this wonderful feedback of your stay here. We are pleased you were so happy staying here. We get such excellent comments about the service levels, the wonderful privacy, the value for money and how "there is everything that you need". But so many of these comments are made to us and not on TripAdvisor. So thank you for sharing this with everybody. Mr T gave a big appreciative smile when I gave him your feedback. We certainly look forward to see you in July From us all at Liz at Lancaster; Liz, Mr T, Catherine and Thandie

Spending three weeks in a guesthouse felt like a challenge, but at Liz at Lancaster it turned out to be anything but. Liz and her exceptional staff have created a personal and caring atmosphere that is instantly welcoming. The self-catering accommodation, with its well-equipped kitchenette and private courtyard, is spacious and comfortable and the attention to detail speaks of Liz's long experience in the hospitality industry. There are enough hangers in the wardrobe, enough hooks in the bathroom, enough plug points (and every conceivable type of adaptor) for even the most plugged-in visitor. With Joburg suffering an intolerable and extended heatwave, the attractive pool with comfortable loungers placed in the shade offered huge relief and the birdlife attracted to the feeders in the immaculate garden added to the ambience. Great breakfasts served on the patio are an added pleasure. What's not to like?

Dear Travelfreak_7 What a wonderful generous and detailed feedback of your stay here at Liz at Lancaster. It makes such a difference for fellow travellers to know some of the detials which make for a comfortable and pleasant visit. You certainly did have some hot weather whilke you were here so, as you say, a dip in the pool helped during the hot afternoons. We so enjoyed having you to stay and hope that you will revisit us again. Take care and hopefully all the travel documentation will be fully sorted very soon. Liz at Lancaster was fabulous. The room was clean and had absolutely everything we needed for the night we were there. It was particularly nice to have a perfect cup of tea with fresh milk and a delicious homemade rusk in the morning. It was also very conveniently located for shops and restaurants. We had a quick and tasty breakfast in the morning in a very nice breakfast room. The staff were very helpful. Thank you.

I recently stayed here for a few days and it was fantastic. The room was spacious, spotless and has everything you need (and more!) The breakfast was great. I'm plant based so breakfast while traveling can be hit or miss. The area is really nice with shops and restaurants all nearby but the best thing about this place is the staff, they will do everything to make your stay as comfortable and enjoyable as possible and are super friendly. Highly recommended.

Dear Intronaut, I am sorry I missed you when you came to stay but I know that Nicole and the team looked after you really well. I was in daily contact so knew about your awful luggage woes. But Nicole was always following it up and I know kept you informed of the where-abouts or "lost status" of your luggage. What a dampener on a holiday. But I am so pleased that you enjoyed your stay here. Best Liz, Nicole and the team

The warm welcome from Catherine, Thandie, Mr T and Liz is like coming home.
We so look forward to a peaceful night’s sleep after the stress of our long flight, the delicious breakfast as we watch Eliot tend the beautiful gardens and the visitors to the busy bird feeders. Bliss!
Saying farewell is sad but we will be back.
Thank you to all at Liz@Lancaster for looking after us so well.

Dear SuzeSue2016 Thank you for taking the time and trouble to give feedback of your stay here at Liz at Lancaster. We love welcoming you back again. And to say that it's like coming home is the best accolade we could receive: all the comforts of home, without any of the hassle of cooking, cleaning and washing and with sunny weather and quiet, peaceful surroundings. The summer birds seem to have abandoned us temporarily or maybe they have just reverted to winter drab plumage! We look forward to your next visit. We stayed at Liz at Lancaster for a 12 day period during which I was recuperating from a medical procedure.
Liz's attention to detail is everywhere., from the manicured gardens to her delicious homemade rusks, We really felt pampered.
If you're looking for a quiet and relaxing accommodation, tucked away in Craighall Park, and a stone's throw away from the Hyde Park and Rosebank shopping centres, you cannot do better than this.
This was our second visit to Liz at Lancaster. And it was equally as pleasant as our first.
Thank you Liz for making our stay a "home away from home".
We're looking forward to our next visit.!!

Dear Nathan3051, It was SUCH a pleasure hosting you both again. I'm just so pleased that the separate living space meant that you could work when you needed to while your wife recuperated. And so good that with the wi-fi on a UPS and uninterrupted internet connection your business communications could continue smoothly. You were here the right time weather wise. Johannesburg had a very hectic Monday 5rh Dec. The garden which was looking so beautiful was shredded. But it will come back. And we have had so much rain since then. Take care and hopefully see you again next year. From all at Liz at Lancaster, Liz, Mr T, Catherine and Thandi

It his hard to describe just how good Liz at Lancaster really is. Everything from start to finish was just brilliant. Booking was straight forward and easy. Follow up contact from Liz was swift and spot on. The location is ideal and the area safe and beautifully leafy and quiet. The property itself is beautiful with a well kept garden and everything nicely presented. Everyone was very welcoming, helpful and friendly and this was something that really made the stay great. The room was clean, tidy, airy and had a lovely little patio area outside for when the weather was nice. If you are planning to stay in Johannesburg then this guest house really is the only one you need to know about. 11/10!

So when I arrived at my own suite in the beautiful garden with an enclosed courtyard just for me at Liz at Lancaster, I was more than impressed! So much attention to detail, everything you need, great bed, umbrella in the courtyard for moi the smoker in case of rain ... all at a very reasonable price. Thank you Liz!

Hi Carrie, Unfortunately I only have one room left from 31st to 3rd April - the blue room (R800 single and R950 double). The best would be to go to my TripAdvisor listing and see my email and web address ( I pay for a business listing so there is no reason why you cannot contact me directly). From the 5th April I have plenty of space but that is probably no good for you?

Dear Terry,

Dear Terry,
Thanks so much for your enquiry. We are between 26 and 39 km from the airport (depending on which route you go). We are in the northwest 'parks' area of the city whereas the airport is on the east of the city in a light industrial area. If you go onto our website and check the map and directions tab you can see more on the layout of the city and our location. Zac who works at Liz at Lancaster is a registered transport provider and does airport collections (R420 for the trip). If by any chance he cannot do I have other regular drivers who stand in for him. I look forward to hearing from you and hope you will come and stay.
