I was pretty disappointed with the Backpacker's Ritz.

There are some good points about the hostel, such as a lovely garden and pool area to relax in and also a nice little bar in the basement.

However, there are very few showers and toilets which I imagine could be a problem when the hostel is really busy.

We also had a really bad experience with one of the staff members. The hostel was having a bbq dinner one night and we approached the front desk to buy tickets for the dinner. The receptionist told us that she didnt want us to go to the bbq. We thought that she was joking and shrugged it off. Then she told us that she hates Australians and thinks that we are the most arrogant people in the world. She also told us that all Australians think the world revolves around them (?!).

We still thought that maybe she was joking until she said that she wished she could drop an Atomic bomb on Australia and wipe out the whole country. Nice.
I responded that she shouldn't want to do that seeing as we have so many South Africans living in Australia. She replied by saying that she wanted to get them too because they are traitors.

All in all, I wouldn't recommend any Australians stay at this hostel. Not unless you want to feel really unwelcome and hated.

Three of us stayed at this backpackers while in Jo'Burg and overall it was ok. We had a lot of contact with various staff over the few days we stayed and their attitudes ranged from polite and attentive to defensive and/or apologetic. We stayed in a triple room that was close to the front door and while the walls weren't exactly soundproof, it was comfortable enough that we all had a good night's sleep. The bathrooms/showers were clean enough, although perhaps not plentiful enough to service a full house!

The reason for the poor rating relates to the interactions between the manager (or perhaps staff supervisor?) and the staff - we became aware of him continually berating the staff and, whether it was justified or not, it was completely unprofessional of him to reprimand them in public (usually at the reception desk or communal tv area). It made us all uncomfortable, as were the other backpackers staying there, and to be honest, for that simple reason, I would not recommend staying at this accommodation to anyone else.

The ritz is an alarming prospect when you first arrive, with intense security precautions at the entrance. The place is clean, safe and the facilities were reasonable. We had a double room which was fine for the price; it's basic, but after 2 weeks of camping anything clean with a shower rated highly for us. Hot dinners are available and Internet access. Nevertheless, the reception staff were terrible - the manager was hostile and intimidating which really put me off the place - our mates went somewhere else because of it!

After a beautiful trip through SA we arrived in Jo'burg and were extremely disappointed about this hostel. It was the most expensive one on our trip but also the worst. Our room was small, had just a really small window and smelled like you are allowed to smoke in there. We got a different room the next day but it wasn't much better. After we paid 30R for the wifi code it didn't work on all the devices we had with us but OF COURSE the guy at the reception told us that our devices were the problem. The door to the toilet was not closing and the showers were not quite clean although the cleaning staff were really nice and organised a heater for us because it was really cold and the door to our room wasn't closing properly.
The area around the hostel is safe but also there is nothing to do there except for to go to a luxurious shopping mall.
After two nights we left and stayed in a cheaper, friendlier and cleaner hostel!

Last weekend a few of my friends came up to Johannesburg ( as they are not locals they didn't know to much about the city). As I had previously heard that the Ritz backpackers was a great place to stay I thought it would be appropriate to book my friends into the backpackers. As we all knew it was a backpackers we did not expect " all the bells and whistles" and rather thought it would be a simple, clean establishment with a good location. On arrival at the Hostel we were greeted by a gentleman behind the front desk who was not really phased by our arrival and started to go through the rules in a most mundane tone. After we had been given the "low down" on how the place worked we payed upfront for the total stay and went on to my friends room... The best possible word I could use to describe the room is inhabitable: the room stank, the windows were broken, the bathroom was a complete tip, but the worst thing of all was the linen( the linen on the bed was still the old linen from the people who had slept in the room the night before.) After this very quick tour of the room we decided that this was not acceptable and that we wanted a refund. Well to our "surprise" the same gentleman behind the front desk told us that since we had put our bags on the bed we could only have a refund for two of the nights and not all three. In other words they basically said pay us R450.00 to see the room and spend a total of five minutes in the establishment.... As a result of all of the above I will never ever recommend this place to anyone ever again!! Hopefully I will be able to save a few of you from the same experience!!

This would have to be the most disgusting place I have stayed. Everything felt humid and filthy. There were giant cockroaches in the showers, and you couldn't close bathroom doors properly. The giant roaches followed you into the bedrooms, and weren't afraid to climb over you or into your bags. As soon as the sun was up I got a taxi straight out of there! Would recommend not staying here if you value hygiene and generally accepted standards of lodgings. The soft drink machine was completely broken, as was the beer vending machine which was partially broken and only sold one beer. A very unpleasant experience.

A little maintenance would have this place at a satisfactory level. eg; broken chairs, tables, power outlets off wall, cracked windows, curtains hanging off rails, smell underneath a sink (couldn't open door as the bed was pushed up against it), GREEN pool, no locks on showers and lock on toilet didn't latch, We were appalled and have recommended the tour company use a different pick up point.
One lady we met was so appalled and worried that she had to stay there at the end of her tour as well. Wasnt just us.....

The Ritz backpackers was recommended by a family member so we thought it was a sure bet for a quality establishment. Wrong! It was the WORST backpackers we stayed at in South Africa! The staff was put out by any the questions we asked and were demanding and inflexible about paying for our tour and our airport shuttle (don't get me started on the airport "shuttle"! We landed at the Jo'burg airport at 3pm and made it to the Ritz at 6:30 PM! We could have driven from Cape Town and made it sooner!). When we asked for help the staff acted as if it would be a big hassle to meet our needs.
Good luck finding a place to brush your teeth! You have to hunt down the one toilet/shower that has a sink!
The pool area was nice. Too bad it was winter!
If your young and want to party this place would be okay. The dorms looked allright. But if you want a place to stay with your significant other, spend the extra to stay in a B&B or hotel! I don't know what other options Jo'burg has, but there just HAS to be a better option than this place!

A nice place top stay. Very friendly and helpful staff that will make your stay very pleasant and for sure you will remember it. They helped me in everything I needed and it was a lot. If you go to Joburg this is the place to stay in.

I would never go there again! The room was nice, the location and the garden are beautiful. But at least one of the receptionists was incredibly unfriendly, rude and not helpful at all. The reception is open 24/7. However, when my friend called to ask for directions because he couldn't find the place at 3 am the guy didn't help at all but seemed to be very annoyed that he was asked to deal with that in the middle of the night. He didn't even give my friend the phone number of a taxi company ("It's 3 am. I don't have any taxi numbers.")! In this business you have to know these things. And even if you don't know phone numbers or even taxi companies, sitting in front of a computer you should be polite enough to at least try to help instead of expressing your lack of interest and motivation!
