A superb alternative to a large hotel situated in a lovely suburb Craighall Park with a lovely garden and pool.
Delia is a great host who cooks a superb breakfast. The rooms are very comfortable with satellite tv including BBC Brit and Sky News! There is a superb deli and restaurant very close by - a safe and easy walk too. All in all a perfect place to begin our holiday. Thanks Delia for making us so welcome and sharing your own life stories!

Thank you David, for your great review. I loved having you both to stay and I hope you are smitten with the South African bug and get to come back to Johannesburg for a longer stay next time. As your fellow Canadian guests said even 3 whole days in JHb was not enough. There is lots to see and do. Safe travels and all the very best for 2020 and beyond. Delia

We arranged for our daughter and her boyfriend to stay at Rutland House for the final week of their visit to South Africa. It was so easy to contact Delia to make the very last minute arrangements we needed. She was extremely helpful and reassuring about their stay. She took care of everything, including transportation and excursions. Our young travelers have provide the most glowing report of their stay with Delia and the wonderful excursions provided by Rudie and Agnes. Top notch accommodation in a warm and inviting setting. It seems that the #1 rating is well deserved. Delia, Rudie and Agnes we cannot thank you enough.

Thank you Maria, for your kind comments in your review. You must be very proud of your lovely daughter, it was fun having them to stay and seeing how much they got out of their time in Johannesburg. I told you they would be fine and safe here as I am a real mother hen when necessary. Next time it must be you visiting !!. Best regards Delia

I travelled with my sister and cousin to Johannesburg and stayed at Delia's Guest House for three nights I know I made the right choice, when we arrived as opposed to staying in a Hotel.

Delia was very welcoming, & gave information on the area and certain shops to go to, she even went out of her way to take my cousin to get a take away and assisted my sister in order food on a different day.
The Guest House Garden is stunning comfortable to sit out and chill which I liked.

I liked home cooked Breakfast in the morning where Delia would be cooking it, it was a treat to see.

My sister and I had the twin Orchard room which is very spacious, clean , love the shower in the mornings , coffee/tea milk in the fridge, Tv, microwave etc

Thanks Delia for being a great host

Thank you so much for your great review Shirley. It was such a pleasure to host you and I am pleased you were not disappointed after booking a year in advance. A pity your flight was cancelled and you arrived a day late. In the end it all worked out well. Take care and all the very best to the three of you. Delia

Seven of us stayed with Delia at the Rutland House as we finished up a trip to South Africa. The rooms were comfy, clean, and nicely decorated - it felt very warm and homey. She made us a fabulous breakfast with eggs, toast, fruit, coffee, and juice, and gave us recommendations for local eateries (the Corner Restaurant, only 3 blocks away, is fantastic). And she shared her experiences as a local (she’s a bicyclist - so am I - and we chatted about the Chapman’s Peak Drive bike ride, quite an awesome challenge). The Rutland House is also in a great, safe, beautiful location, perfect for exploring Jo’burg and environs. Very highly recommended!

Absolutely detestable!

I might edit this later, however, I would advise not staying here. After I left I was charged for breaking a chair and leaving the room in total disarray accompanied by a very rude email full of personal insult.

So, if you like being insulted; being charged from breaking things that are in fine working condition; being told that folded blankets, washed dishes, wiped counters, wiped stoves, trash set aside, and just a general state of daily cleanliness constitutes filthy; and having your trash gone through (yes, this happened too), then this is the perfect place for you. Otherwise, I don't advise it.

The trash thing is really sketchy though. Why would someone go through someone else's trash?..

Dear Jo, Thank you for your review. We obviously have differing ideas on cleanliness. You forget to mention I did not charge you when the single booking suddenly becoming a double booking with your girlfriend. I let this pass. You do not mention I drove you to my local gym and introduced you to the management and asked for a special rate for you. I went out of my way to make you feel at home and comfortable. But I am pleased you have had a chance to say your words. Delia

Our famiy of 4 and close family friend stayed with Delia at the Rutland House on 4 separate occasions during our 3-1/2 week trip to South Africa in September and October. All I can say is "hostess with the mostest" does not even come close to describing Delia's beautiful property and the services she provides to her guests. She arranged transportation for us from the airport, she stored our extra suitcases when we took our excursions to other parts of the country and welcomed us home as family on each of our return trips. She made our dinner and sight-seeing reservations as well. I can't imagine that anyone could do a better job for her guests. The rooms are immaculate and beautifully decorated with fresh fruit, delicious local treats called "rusks", coffee with french press coffee makers and even real milk in the fridge. The grounds are beautiful with all kinds of flowers, beautiful blooming bushes and trees and birds of all types. Alfie and Kitty are just an added bonus in making The Rutland House feel like (actually better than!) home. I just wished we lived closer so we could stay with our now good friend, Delia, much sooner.

Delia is a fantastic host, she gave us some really good tips for having dinner. We decided for the CNR cafe two blocks away and she made a reservation for us. The good thing is that this part of town is safe so we could even walk there. It was very nice.
The rooms in Rutland House are welcoming, very clean and have little extras like a fruit basket made it special.

Rutland House is an absolute gem. Run by Delia and her staff, it is an electic mix of clean, comfy accomodation, with privacy whenever you want and a good old natter thrown in. I don't think I have ever stayed anywhere so friendly. Our room was roomy with larger than normal twin beds, a dinig table, tv, sofa, en-suite and patio! Delia is one of the best cooks on the planet - she offered dinner one night and after that we just couldn't be bothered to go out! Our bathroom was not "american standard perfect" in that it had seen better days but it was spotlessly clean and belted out gallons of hot water and I for one would far rather have an "individual" fun place to stay than a large boring chain hotel. Full marks. Can't wait to go back.

Rutland House is a warm welcoming and stunning place to spend a few nights (or more of you can afford it). Delia and Gretta are the perfect hosts - gentle and caring for your every need. The large gardens are gorgeous and enchanting. My room was as comfortable as my own bedroom - with all amenities. Suburban Johannesburg at its best and in walking distance to the areas best restaurants. When you are next in Joburg, give it a try

Dear James, Yes indeed you do have a reservation booked by Compass Odyssey for 4 rooms for 17 May 18. At Rutland House Not only is Compass Odyssey a reputable company, they are a terrific tour operator. Darren leaves no stone un-turned to make your trip easy, safe and the very best experience of your life. I have had many of his clients stay with me and I have seen the effort he puts into the guests welfare. You are lucky to have found him. On another note - I only know about your question thanks to a past Australian guest who stayed with me this year and forwarded this to me. I did not receive any notification from Tripadvisor. Thank you Jennifer for passing this on. Wishing you all the very best and i Look forward to meeting you all on 17 May 2018 which will be here sooner than a flash :-) Delia
