I've been wanting to visit Mountain Sanctuary Park for years and finally got the chance when my partner booked a surprise getaway. I was totally blown away. This is a magnificent property, and as I said a little piece of heaven. If you are looking for a place to rest and rejuvenate, then this is it.

Our chalet was clean and spacious, and there is a beautiful pool oasis which overlooks the Buffelspoort Dam. We went on a hike and the scenery was breath-taking, we got to see some of the oldest rock formations in the Southern Hemisphere.

The restaurant needs a bit of work with regards to their menu offering, but apart from that I would highly recommend Mountain Sanctuary Park. The perfect getaway and not too far from Pretoria and Johannesburg.

Looking for a place to take the family for the week end just 90min from Johannesburg. There are both chalets and camping sites available. Within a short hike / walking distance there are some lovely rock pools which the kids can slide down into. There are also more strenous hikes / MTB cycling. Most chalets are rudimentary BUT have everything you need for self catering. There is also a beautiful stunning swimming pool with a bar, with awesome views where you are also able to braai. Highly recommended for a short visit.

We arrived to an empty site, we had the place to ourselves which initially we thought was a good thing ! The setting is beautiful .. very peaceful. When we arrived at the campsite we were told at the office that there are baboons, so lock your food in your car or trailer. We padlocked our trailer everytime we went out. We saw our first baboons the next day at breakfast, they are obviously used to humans, and came right up to the table, which is intimidating as they are the size of a small labrador, ... none of the rubbish bins had been emptied (even though we were the only ones staying) it would seem the only things emptying the bins were the baboons ... each bin had been ransacked with the rubbish lying all over the place... only once did we see a member of staff come around and pick up the rubbish in the 3 days we were camping ... We visited the slide pools one afternoon which were truly magnificent ... natural mountain pools in which you are able to slide down ..... great for children (and adults)...... On returning to our tent we could see that the baboons had paid us a visit, even though we had locked everything away .... our cooker had been thrown onto the ground, but worse, was our teenage children's ground tent (which we had also padlocked) had been ripped across the back, a baboon had got in and ransacked the tent obviously looking for food. This is a big heavy canvas dome tent, NOT a flimsy nylon one. There was no food in the tent, so the baboon pulled out my daughter's wash bag and took the toothpaste ! We were unable to continue camping as we didn't have enough sleeping space. We had booked for a week's holiday so we had to de-camp into one of the chalets, the Manager gave it to us at a reduced rate, but shrugged off the baboon incident by saying 'well it is a nature reserve'. The camping ablutions are a bit tired but they are clean. The chalet was spotless, a little dark but it was dry and warm and had everything you would need, we had to provide our own towels and bedding. It is a shame that the camping isn't managed more efficiently, ie regular bin emptying etc, or somebody on regular patrols as it is a stunning place with natural beauty, great walks, lovely clean swimming pool and braai area and if you like baboons then you will love it there, especially now that they all have lovely clean teeth !!!!

We were camping, but we could not leave the caravan alone as there were monkeys and boboons looking for food and horasing the campers the whole day. For the money you pay this is not funny or acceptable.

The bathrooms is clean but old and need a bit of attention or an upgrade.

The campsite is shady and spacious and the wardens will do their best to look after you!
The park itself is breathtaking - the rock pools are tranquil, shaded and great for a dip, and you'll be almost completely alone wandering around the beautiful rock formations. I walked up the mountain here on a Saturday afternoon and didn't see another person for hours.

Couldn't have had a better romantic getaway!

We stayed in Log Cabin 4 which has all your basic amenities, great breeze through the cabin which is kitted out with fans, cutlery, microwave, braai, outside chairs etc.

Amazing long hikes (or short if you prefer!). Stunning pools! Bit of a climber's paradise as well. And such a gorgeous swimming pool which has a bar / tuck shop there (take cash).

Loved it, great for couples and definitely for families as well. It's a rustic weekend in nature. Gorgeous. Great value for money.

I can go into a lot of detail, but I will rather just summarise our experience:

a) I respect rules and regulations, but it can be softened and set in the positive! The "NO", "NOT", "BEWARE" etc were a bit much
b) Quality of accommodation & bath towels are poor.
c) Overpriced for what one gets
d) No cleaner in sight for 3 days
e) Everything just a bit tatty - from the reception to the signage
f) Monkeys and baboons are an enormous problem.
g) Road can do with some attention - we had a rented saloon car and not a 4x4.

On the positive side, we were impressed by the nature and the rock pools. We were also very happy with the quality of food at the restaurant, and the service we have received from Martin and staff.

Had a pushy Stacy push us to pay in full with short and abrupt emails, after which her replies to us got worse. We joked that maybe she was suffering from hangovers when she was writing to us. We arrived to find we had to pay for vehicle entry?? Did they think we were going to arrive on foot? This should have been included in the price. We were given a chalet number and when we turned up, had to figure out where the mains switch was as there was no electricity. Accommodation needs some attention... acceptable but hardly clean. Stacy had told us to bring our own bedsheets and towels, but the bad was already made up and there were towels in the bathrooms. Bizarre. The area is nice, though nowhere near as pristine or beautiful as the Dome nearby. There were signs everywhere saying "Don't do this!" and "Report anyone you see doing this!", which we thought could have been phrased in a more welcoming manner. The sun beds bolted to the decks by the pool made us laugh, especially the single one by itself - for lonely single travellers? The place was almost full which is a shame because it seems to me that the owners have found themselves a decent location to take money out of people on, and have then taken the attitude that they don't need to be welcoming or friendly or make any effort because there's always people coming in anyway. We also trekked around the entire place and didn't know where they'd shot many of the photos on their website... Won't be going back again. Would advise others to look around for better places.

Highly overpriced accommodation for both chalets and camping. Best as a day visit and bigger groups (over 4) should stay clear. Well a quiet place is welcome, unreasonable wardens make the overall experience unpleasant. Facilities run down and the best part, the natural setting has become littered and staff fail to keep the area clean. There are numerous accommodation and reservation options in the area that offer a far better experience.

No refund of your 100% deposit paid if you cancel late. is this fair? We booked a weekend to the park two months ahead of time. Three families to take their little ones on their first camping experience. On the morning of our booked tripped it was pouring with rain! We phoned the camp site to find out their weather and was told it was pouring there also and had been so for the last 24 hours. Camping with kids in the rain does not sound like fun so we cancelled late. When trying to rebook for another weekend we were told that we lost the entire deposit which was a 100% of what the weekend would have cost us. Shocking!
