The best thing about this hotel is the bathroom clean with a great shower The room is tired, the curtains didn’t meet in the middle and the rail was hanging off. The bed tiny, the hospitality tray in the room was poor. Cremona? Really? The tray was not refreshed the next day but he empty packets I had used were neatly stacked back in the tray. An empty fridge running in the corner of the room. Either fill it or switch it off, we have an electricity scarcity here.
The staff were friendly and helpful, the public areas were nice. An ok stay for a business meeting

And a night at the Sunnyside Hotel proved to be fun and entertaining. Not only were the staff helpful and friendly but the food, ambiance and general surrounds made us fall in love once again with this old lady of Johannesburg.

I remember the days when we used to meet after work on the wide open terrace under the giant oak trees on a Friday. And when the sun was well and truly set we would move off to Rocky Street in Yeoville for dinner before settling for Plum Crazy night club in Central JHB. Once that closed time to head off to Godfather in Hillbrow.

Once the sun started to make an appearance we would pass on at the Fonatana for rolls and rotisserie chicken to keep in the car for dinner whilst enjoying breakfast at the Sunnyside knowing we would sleep the day away at home. That's how our lives were in the 80's.

Spending the weekend there again brought back all these wonderful memories. The bedrooms are as spacious as they were then (when the thought of driving home was too much we didnt have central booking offices only bright eyed and bushy tailed receptionists happy to oblige bleary eyed revellers) with a few upgrades here and there. Bigger showers and the addition of the Holiday Inn building to accommodate families.

The Pound Bar still looked the same with the dark wood furniture you could almost hear the loud chitter chatter of women finally being allowed into men's only bars (at least this one didn't smell of urine like the others in our neighbourhood in those days as men's bathrooms were always just off rhe bar itself). The deck outside under the large oak trees was cool and the breeze rustled the leaves above us. Who would think we were just outside the city centre. There were no truck or car sounds just the shouts of children playing in the nearby pool.

The dinner was served early as we were due to catch the Ghost Tour with MYSTERY GHOST PRODUCTIONS - previously Mystery Ghost Bus of South Africa . We all ordered something different and not only were the portions enormous but they were well cooked and nicely presented. As was breakfast this morning. I was impressed with the lady doing the omelette that I videod her precision and delight in making each one (those in the queue waiting for eggs all turned their orders into omlettes).

Why not spend a weekend doing the tourist thing and visit the nearby Constitutional Hill or catch a show at Joburg theatre. Make it your visitors from out of town, stay of choice. I'll definitely recommend this great spot....#travelmatch

Atrocious stay. Our initial room had a loud air con so we were moved. The room they moved us to had half empty bottles of water, a used soap bar and hair in the shower -just filthy... so we were moved again... the next room had huge stains on the frayed carpet and mold in the shower -again filthy. The entire housekeeping staff (starting with the manager) needs to be retrained on what is considered an acceptable clean standard. The breakfast buffet is acceptable but the service is poor. While the hotel grounds are pleasant, it is surrounded by the worst neighborhood we stayed in SA. There are plenty of hotels in Johannesburg, don't waste your money or time here.

I’ve been at this same hotel previously and was pleasantly surprised on this visit. It’s recently become a Holiday Inn and the transformation is slight but noticeable. The hotel itself has a rich history and originates in a different era. The high vaulted ceilings and wide open spaces is something that I’ve always liked about it, but it was getting old. The recent refurbishment has kept its old world charm, but the amenities have been upgraded. Everything from the bathrooms, to the dining hall and fitness Centre. Certain features such as the ornate wood paneling and solid wooden staircases still remain, but the mix gives a nice mix of old world opulence and modern convenience. And the breakfast staff has remained from the old hotel and it is excellent. Anyway, really enjoyed my stay and would highly recommend.

1st Room given, was falling apart, air conditioner did not work. Carpet was dirty, curtains coming of its rail. Door to balcony would not lock.
Room was on street side, very noisy!
Kindly given another room facing the gardens. Not much better, but at least air conditioner worked. The noise of renovations on the floor above was rather overwhelming, as well as the leaf blowers used in the garden, non-stop from 07h00 to 16H00.
Food in restaurant was dismal. Please note that there are no other restaurants walking distance away and its not safe to walk in any event. (I did not have a vehicle)
The Pub was closed, due to Covid, even though Covid rules have changed at that time. However, room service was available.
I do emphasize that the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff did, up to a point, make up for the bad rooms and pathetic restaurant.
I chose the hotel as it is close to Parklane Hospital.
Still, the price of R1,200 is not justifiable!
Do not understand how the hotel can have a 4.5* rating!

Hiding away in a wooded area in Houghton, the hotel is next to some of the University of the Witwatersrand's faculties. The main building is a beautiful old house dating from 1985 that was once also the home of Lord Milner.

This great property is supported by a professional staff team that perfectly augments the property. I felt right at home, and spending time to meet some of my clients in the afternoon and evening in their lounge was not only a very comfortable setting, but the staff was attentive and friendly. It was, in summary, a memorable experience that left me with wonderful memories.

Capture the history of Johannesburg, city of gold from this hotel. Hotel reception and main building are housed in a monumental structure with a plaque describing the history of this land. Without a doubt,no wonder why it was declared a heritage site. The giagantic apple custard trees provide a serene environment for tourism ambience. Clean rooms give extra restful experience.

Close to the hotel is Kilarney and Rosebank malls for that exquisite shopping. Several options available for accessing nearby historical sites. Gauteng train and red bus tour are a must activities.

Really appreciated the short stay with supporting hotel staff. Lethi and Esther by the reception are just amazingly outstanding!!

Hi i did not make use of the pool so i wont be able to answer that question. I would suggest you contact the hotel or check out their website for accurate details. As for halal meals, because i am not Muslim i wont know but i am sure they cater for all, and if not on site i am sure they would be able to order it in for you. One email to the hotel would certainly answer that question. All the best and enjoy your holiday in SA
