Not only is this hotel beautifully appointed and of the highest standard but it has a certain ‘Je ne sais quoi’ that cannot be explained and needs to be experienced.

As this is the residence of Nelson Mandela that has been developed as a unique boutique hotel and contemplative space, you cannot help but experience both the presence and grace of this amazing man.

The hotel is filled with the history and the character of Mandela down to the Head Chef who was the personal chef to Mandela. This also allows for the lifting of the veil around this great statesman to reveal some of his human characteristics and even idiosyncrasies.

This must be the best venue in Johannesburg to host that all important meeting or luncheon/dinner and I can think of no better place to host your important international guests.

If they, or you, are deemed important enough, you can even spend an evening or two in the presidential suite which was his bedroom.

I cannot stop sinning the praises of this amazing venue.

The service is attentive and if the highest standard yet not intrusive and you defiantly feel at home.

I just didn’t want to leave.

You HAVE to visit this hotel!!!

What a wonderful experience a luxury home away from home steeped in heritage a an honour to have stayed in a building Madiba resided. This boutique hotel offers personalized attention where no requests is too much to ask. The team are proud of their hotel and it shines through with inspirational art work which adorned the walls fitting of a Gallery experience

We were a family of 4 in two rooms at the hotel and we couldn't pass up the opportunity to spend the night at Nelson Mandela's former home. Rooms 1, 2 and 3 are the original bedrooms and rooms 4-9 were added. All guests are offered a tour of the hotel which takes about 30 minutes. No need for a reservation. Just let them know when you arrive when it fits into your schedule. Rooms were amazing with very high ceilings (15 feet..ish) and very large. The entire place felt more like a spa, encouraging reflection. The staff members were phenomenal and very friendly. It is about a block from stop 3 (Nelson Mandela Foundation) on the Hop On, Hop Off bus tour, so that can provide easy access to other points of interest.

I was traveling through and had 3 nights in Johannesburg. Sanctuary Mandela was perfect! Intimate, comfortable, clean and an exceptional A+ staff. The menu was smaller, however everything was delicious. The staff was easily to accommodate my dietary needs by altering menu items. I feel so fortunate to stay on a property with such rich history. I hope to return!

Sanctuary Mandela has "Wow" factor like no other. Besides for the status that it holds, it truly is an exquisite sanctuary encompassing the legacy of Madiba.

The "Home" has a warm | peaceful and serene ambience throughout the Home. The Historic artifects and decor represents Madiba's values and principals.

I had the honour of staying in Suite 2 and I loved every minute of my stay. The Suite is beautiful and luxurious and like no other.

The cuisine prepared by Madiba's personal Chef Xoliswa and the other chefs was absolutely superb.

The service from the entire Santuary Mandela Team lives up to Madiba's legacy.
A warm and heartfelt Thank You to Whitney | Sbu | Naison | Tumi and Kervin for their outstanding service and making my stay one of the most memorable experiences in my life.

I highly recommend a visit to Sanctuary Mandela and Insights restaurant. A Home away from Home.

If you are looking for an experience, not just a visit to Johannesburg, then you must book at least one night in Sanctuary Mandela as part of your stay. This is the former home of Nelson Mandela which has been converted to a small hotel, with the feel of a luxury guest house. Many of the original features are still here, and the welcoming staff members are only too happy to bring you on a guided tour. The food is excellent, the location is great and the staff are top notch.

This is the best boutique hotel I’ve ever experienced! The staff actually curates a special one on one experience from food to drinks to transportation to engaging in the beautiful art and history that this hotel houses. All of the staff seem to be in sync with every idiosyncrasy and desire that I had as a guest. They’re intuitive attention to detail was mind blowing. It is worth every penny and presents South africa and all of its beauty in the most caring and loving way.

STAY HERE!!!!! I can't imagine a better place to stay to truly take in all that Nelson Mandela did for this country and truly learn and honor this remarkable man. They converted his prior home into this beautiful small boutique hotel. My travel agent (elsewhere- highly recommend) recommended it. First of all, it is small and personal. The staff is like none other than I have experienced in the world. The US should take notes. So nice, so kind, so welcoming. I honestly wanted to hang out with them. So interesting to talk to. My husband was born in Johannesburg a few miles away and this was his first trip back in 47 years. Needless to say alot changed since 1977. He mentioned he would love some pap (pronounced pup) and it wasn't on the menu. Our waiter had the chef make some the next day. It is a traditional meal similar to southern grits and it takes all day to make. That was special. Be sure to allow time (30 min) to take the tour of the hotel. All the rooms have meaningful names, all the photos tell a story. The room was very comfortable. Laundry service every day was included. And a special history lesson/ treat each evening. The food at the restaurant was excellent. Most hotels are just a place to stay and are not memorable. Sanctuary Mandela is aptly named and will be remembered forever. HIGHLY recommend.

This is an amazing property. It is tastefully designed with so much history showcased all around. It is serene and cozy making you feel like family. The staff are awesome, the food is delish! We chatted with Chef Xoliswa Ndoyiya  who was Mandela's personal chef for over 20 years who shared some incredible stories. There young head Chef also has an incredible story. The pool is warm if you want a relaxing dip and there are books you can browse and purchase.

This stay was tremendous and we loved every moment. This really is a sanctuary.

On Christmas, my family and I had the chance to dine at Sanctuary Mandela, and it was a memorable experience during our visit to Johannesburg for the holiday. We were initially disappointed to find that the menu had changed, but we were pleasantly surprised by the excellent choices available to us. As it was a holiday, the restaurant was quite empty, which suited us just fine. The staff were incredibly attentive, and their pride in their roles was evident. I particularly enjoyed a perfectly cooked steak, which was not only delicious but also beautifully presented. The drinks were also top-notch.

It's worth noting that this restaurant is situated at a former home of Nelson Mandela, which has been transformed into a boutique hotel and restaurant.
