This is an oasis in the northern suburbs of Johannesburg. Prepare to relax and feel as if you are in a hotel that time left behind, a feeling of (if you like) being cast off from society in the peace and quiet of this large house (or small hotel) until you leave through the gates. Even the neighbourhood has a serenity and friendliness, tranquillity and peace.

I cannot overstate what a contrast this is to the hustle, bustle and frenetic city centre of Johannesburg only a few miles to the south. Foxwood House is situated in a leafy area of the city, with a shopping mall only minutes walk away, where you can eat or buy all manner of goods. The area is very safe and every day we walked the mile or two to Rosebank and the northern stop of the Hop On, Hop Off Bus. Every morning and afternoon we were greeted by the gardeners and security guards that worked in the neighbourhood along our journey.

Foxwood house and our room were just splendid. We stayed in the Pearl Oats Suite, which had a lovely, large balcony where we sat every afternoon. The room had a fridge, a cable television, a good size wardrobe, good wifi and tea & coffee making facilities. The bathroom was large and the water always hot.

The breakfast was cooked to order, tasty and plentiful. The staff were so very friendly and the grounds and house like something from a fairytale. Old, quaint, interesting, meandering, peaceful, beautiful, cool, picturesque and relaxing are words that come to mind.

We were alone when we wanted to be and the staff or owners were there when we needed them. When we left for the airport after spending four nights, we wondered if it would be possible to find anywhere like Foxwood House again. I doubt it. Try it and be prepared to let the place envelop you.

Thank you. In a time like this, your report touches us all deeply. The warmth and kindness of your words will carry us through a period of lockdown that challenges morale and the spirit of the staff and owners. The trouble you have taken to write such a detailed account of Foxwood House and your stay with us is noted with gratitude and humility! Best wishes and rich blessings in a time of international stress - wherever you are now. May the road always rise to meet your feet!

Excellent place to relax while being at a hide-away in Johannesburg. Friendly staff and wonderful atmosphere. Get away from busy city life while only a 5 min drive from Joburg city centre. A wonderful relaxed afternoon in the lounge with a book. And an evening strolling among the tall trees and romantic corners of the awesome garden. This venue in Jozi is a must visit.

The staff was very kind and accommodating. They went above and beyond in their helpfulness. The grounds are beautiful and the rooms very nice. There's a shopping mall within about a 5 minute walk. Dinner and breakfast were very tasty. Would definitely go back and highly recommend.

Management caused an unnecessary argument with the bride and groom. It was very unpleasant, an we were only 24 people at the wedding. The groom asked for the leftover wine (wine that he bought), to take to his room to share with a few friends. This request did not go well, the manager went off in such a rude way, her behaviour shocked us! For the rest 10/10

I deeply regret that I hadn't known about it before - through no fault of yours but my own - and possibly intentional attempts to suppress the version of events that have only come to my attention now. My heartfelt apologies.Happening in the midst of a renewed outbreak of Covid, looking back now we believe the incident may have reflected the incredible stress experienced by the manager at the time. The manager has completely withdrawn from any communication from then and left a few weeks later. The incident has only come to my attention in recent weeks, but I wish knew of it then to tender my personal apologies.

Very beautiful venue, old Victorian mansion, now guesthouse with a little theatre. Sadly Christmas lunch was not up to par but we have been invited back at no cost to apologize for the disappointment. I appreciate the gesture as this is the way to keep guests coming back. I have attended a theatre production and it was indeed lovely. I have not stayed as a guest in their rooms so am unable to comment on that.

Thank you for your kind response to our invitation back. It is heart warming. The impact of the constant power outages prompted our dear colleague Theresa to serve Methode Cap Classique as palliative to frayed nerves. When I spoke to you as you were leaving the bond of sympathy was almost tangible. I sadly realized you could not attend the repeat Christmas on the 26th as I looked out for you! Possibly I missed you? Warm regards and thank you for your thanks.

I was quite surprised at a particularly vitriolic review regarding Foxwood House pertaining to the Christmas lunch (2012). As we are all aware when travelling, no venue can ever be 'all things to all people'. It all depends on what you are looking for and one would do well to carefully choose the environment you require. Yes, the food was not what you would expect at a 5 star specialist gourmet restaurant (I was also a guest at this luncheon), but the fare was well presented, very tasty, wholesome, generous and the service was relaxed and intimate. I chose Foxwood House because I do not enjoy the noise and 'glitz' of the many Sandton venues, I prefer to sit in a lush natural garden setting as I live in a complex. When I travel and have a bruising schedule, this is the type of hotel I search for.

Foxwood House has a historical setting and the bird-life is fascinating. Do not expect a hi-tech pub or any loud entertainment. That being said, Foxwood House has always been a great supporter of excellent South African artists. The theatre hosts performances (and premieres) by many top South African actors/musicians and it is also the home of Opera Africa's Young Artist Concert Series. It is also the setting for numerous television arts programs. When booking a conference at this venue you can also arrange entertainment in the theatre, if that is what you want.

If this is the environment you require, Foxwood House is the best choice.

Mike F, I am truly grateful for such a beautifully written review, in terms of style and content. All my staff would like me to thank you - and so do I - for the time and effort you have taken to write and post your review. We are doing our best, mostly to a highly sophisticated clientele who appreciate the rural simplicity, beautiful surroundings and solidly presentable fare. One of our chefs - Loveness Ndlovu - has earned high praise from former President Mandela's personal chef. We take pride in an unpretentious quality approach not vying for first place with the top Michelin restaurants, as you appeared to have noticed, but presenting the best beef fillet and Karoo lamb stew in town (or so do we believe!). Many thanks, once again. Pieter de Vos (Owner)

I have stayed at Foxwood many times and it is really a lovely place. The service is excellent, the staff very friendly and prompt. Quite a few times I have been running workshops and everything has gone very smoothly The food is great, especially the breakfast, which can be taken outside in the wonderful garden.

Thank you for your review. We do realize it takes time out of a busy schedule to comment - be it on this website or an e-mail directly to us - and it is greatly appreciated. There can be nothing more beautiful than an early morning breakfast in our gardens outside - weather permitting (as summer rains are a constant part of our lives from November to February)! Regards. Stayed at the Foxwood on business. Staff were friendly, however the room on the first night was a bit jaded. Outside shower, freezing temperatures in Joburg so bath it was. Breakfast was fine, the grounds I'm sure are wonderful during the summer, pools and ponds with swans. Lots of peacocks parading around too. I mentioned my dissatisfaction with not having a shower to the manager, Joey, and she kindly moved me to a different room, with full ensuite. The price is right for the 2nd room, and the 2nd night made up for the first, so I guess I would stay there again.

in Johannesburg there is a lot of new money, flashy spots with modern decor and ambiance to match. then there is Foxwood House...The stately house from the Art Nouveau period is surrounded by huge gardens filled with peacocks, ducks and birds. The interior if filled with antiques and collectables and has a wonderful ambiance.
The rooms are well equipped with every mod con but nothing beats the restful, quiet space of the garden. Tolkien could have lived here! The owners will give you personal attention and care..a must when you visit Johannesburg.
