On arrival we were met by Solomon who was delightful and couldn’t be more helpful. There is no check in service so we couldn’t understand how he knew who we were until we found out later that we were the only people staying there. Our room was spacious and clean, if a little dated but the oddity was that apart from a piece of paper giving the wifi code and breakfast time, there were no other instructions in the room for the safe, or the tv or even local attractions, something that I have never seen. We had no hot water for a shower or bath in the morning despite there being hot water in the basin. Breakfast was a limited affair (cooked breakfast) but well cooked by Solomon. This place could do well with a little more thought and attention to detail.
We stayed at Le Chatelat, located in the salubrious district of Sandhurst, for two nights when we flew into Johannesburg in the early hours of 21 April. I had emailed the property to advise of our unusually early arrival, telling them we did not expect to be accommodated at that early hour, but keen to offload our luggage. However, on arriving in darkness at 6.00am, we were promptly shown to our prepared room by the night janitor and asked whether we would prefer to rest before breakfast and what time would we like to eat. We were very impressed and relieved to have this level of hospitality. The front of desk staff member, Soloman, was exceptional. He was multi-tasking the whole time we were there and was very helpful when we had a security scare at the local Sandton City shopping mall, . In fact, in order to ensure our safety, he ordered cars for us whenever we wanted to go out by ourselves and also arranged return transport so that we were not put at risk. The rooms here are amazing. Previously a very elegant private residence, it still has that feel and is such a change from the more austere big-chain hotel vibe. The grounds also have a European feel to them - the deciduous trees were starting to colour up. The only down side was the water that invaded our room via the roof during a day of heavy downpours. Some money could be allocated to fixing the roof. Soloman's breakfasts were delicious and we can't say enough about the way he looked after us - he certainly went beyond the scope of his usual duties to ensure our safety and comfort. We highly recommend this accommodation for the time of year that we were visiting. We're not sure whether it would be warm enough in the middle of winter. Had the roof not leaked, it would have scored a perfect score.…
Ok SO for the idiots that gave this place a bad review- you guys didn't deserve to be there and more than likely you were the jerks in the equation! THIS PLACE IS AMAZING! THE PEOPLE THAT WORK THAT ARE AVAILABLE FOR ANYTHING YOU NEED AT ANY TIME!! This hotel is UNIQUE! It had the luxuries of a hotel but the peace and quiet like that was your OWN HOME! the pictures DONT DO THIS PLACE JUSTICE!! LET ME REPEAT THE PICTURES DO NOT! do this place justice! From the amazing crystal chandelier to the winding staircase- the view from our bedroom overlooking the garden, the spacious rooms AMAZING BATHROOMS! Catered to breakfast! I COULD GO ON!!! Solomon is a SWEETHEART AND Prince is a Great Cook when it came to our breakfast meals! I LOVED THEM BOTH!! YOU HAVE TO GO YOU JUST HAVE TO !! This place made our trip well worth it. My only advice to the hotel staff and owner- upgrade the pool area- get new lounge chairs - have the pool clean- get concrete and replace the gravel- that's it - fix the pool area and have lounge furniture- it will make a BIG difference. Everything else WAS AMAZING.…
We booked and paid in full for two Grande Suites at Le Chatelat for our last night of a truly magical 3 week long holiday with our two grown up children in South Africa. Upon arrival at about 3pm we were met by Solomon who informed us that our rooms weren’t ready but we could have the Presidential Suite instead and that the other room would be ready later. Although the suite was beautiful, it contained someone else’s toiletries, clothes and belongings. We pointed this out and were told that it was the Boss’s room and it would be cleaned and prepared for our return after a meal out that evening. On return at about 8.30pm we could get no answer from the telecom system that allowed entry into the hotel. We were stood in the dark in the road for about 10 minutes feeling extremely vulnerable. Eventually Solomon allowed entry but then informed us that the Grande Suite which we booked was no longer available and that we would have to have a Courtyard room. Although it was acceptable, it certainly wasn’t what we had booked and paid for. The hotel had loud thumping music playing, children in the kitchen and no sight of any other guests or staff! We felt vulnerable and uneasy but it was late and we needed to leave the hotel at 7.30am the next morning for a flight. During the night a child tried to get into our room, tugging and rattling loudly on the door handle, luckily the door was locked. I could hear the mother calling the child away after I called out to inform them that the room was occupied. The next morning, there was no one around AT ALL. Outside our room were two sofa’s which had duvets on where people had obviously slept. There was no breakfast. No drinks. It was completely empty. We tried all the downstairs rooms to find staff or anyone to help but it was empty. Again, this made us feel very uneasy and anxious. When our taxi arrived we had no means for letting it through the locked, automatic gates. We raced around the hotel, calling for help, pressing buttons hoping it would allow the gates to open including rummaging in the hotel office trying to find a buzzer to open the gates. Still no luck. Eventually we removed some linkage from the automatic gate that allowed us to get ourselves and cases out of the hotel grounds. We have never felt so disappointed, scared and let down by what could have been a wonderful final night in South Africa. Seriously think twice before booking this hotel. It may look beautiful but that’s where it ends. We have emailed the hotel twice and have heard nothing back, not even an apology. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED, BY CAREFUL.…
We enjoyed a business dinner at Lechatelat. The reception we received was wonderful and we enjoyed pre dinner drinks overlooking the beautiful garden and pool was truly special. Our private dinning was hosted in the cellar was just perfect , the service professional , and 3 course meal most enjoyable. This is a very private spot with a wonderful boutique style and feel.
