Beautiful great hotel with large rooms and beautiful premises (including outside pool).
We especially loved the breakfast.
Location wise the hotel is between a purely residential area and a not-so-nice local shopping area; there is nothing in walking distance. There is a good laundry and petrol station around the corner with some basic shopping items which was helpful.
Staff was great.
Reception at peak times sometimes understaffed and internal phone calls to reception were not answered.
They have a nice Spa area with all sorts of treatments. The indoor pool, sauna and steam room are free to use; if you want to use the separate outside Spa area you have to pay or book a treatment.
If you are a light sleeper as I am you better ask for a room not in the first floor (music from the restaurant area beneath can be heard in the rooms).
I would love to stay there again.

A real oasis in the heart of the city.
We primarily looked for a place where we could sleep and relax before our intercontinental flight the following day and picked it solely on location.
We were overwhelmed by the contemporary style, the huge rooms with peekaboo showers, the setting on the golf course and the great restaurants. Yummy!
The service level was as expected at the very top. One of our children caught a cold and the staff immediately offered to go to a near by pharmacy to grab medicin.
If there is anything to improve it must be the confusing and very illogical route to the swimmingpool, spa and gym. From the room you will have to walk to end of the corridor, take the lift down to the garage and walk through it to get to the pool. Clearly a design flaw and not a walk you would like to undertake in only your swimmers...

The property appears immense since it is part of a golf course and apartment complex, however the hotel itself is a nice size. It is extremely clean and modern. Everyone from the bellman to the front desk reception to the cleaning staff to the food service staff was incredibly friendly and professional. The spacious king room I was in overlooked the pool and was across from the apartments. It is an open floor plan with frosted glass doors you can close around the bathroom area -- otherwise it is all open. The toilet is separate, but even it has a frosted glass door. The bed was super comfy with wonderful linens. My only complaint is that the walls could be better soundproofed. The gym is gorgeous. I didn't make it to the spa, so can't vouch for that but I'm sure it's on par with the rest. There is a heated indoor pool in the spa area. There is a convenient restaurant with some very healthy options, which I was pleased to see. Service is a bit slow, but very attentive. The hotel is located in a very nice residential area near where Nelson Mandela had a house. If I come back to Joburg, I'll stay here again.

Voted the best 5 star hotel in South Africa in 2021 and it’s easy to see why.

I stayed in what the hotel called a “Junior Suite” however there was nothing junior about the room.
You could easily seat 4 people for a private meal with a separate washroom from the bedroom area.

Both nights we ordered room service, the price of food and drink is very good for a 5 star hotel.
The staff are very friendly there was a couple of minor hiccups regarding a couple of orders but the staff go above an beyond to making your stay as enjoyable as they can.

The WiFi is extremely good, the hotel is extremely clean.
On arrival there was a bottle of white wine (South African of course) with a welcome note that was hand written by Miriam Ryan (manger) which was a lovely touch.

Then night we arrived the hotel had a number of functions on however you wouldn’t have noticed.

Thank you for a wonderful stay.

I had a problem in the room with the air conditioning that did not reach the temperature we put in. The maintenance team came to try to fix it, without success. But it must be a structural problem, because they put (in the suite we were in) a machine to exchange air with ice. This indicates that the problem is recurring. The room is also not completely sealed with the curtains. The sun comes in strongly through the cracks and the bathroom window, illuminating everything very early, as there is no entrance door to the bathroom. We also had a problem with the hired transport (for 3x more than an uber) to the airport, which was 30 minutes late to take us, because their car were doing another tour and the hotel staff told us that it would arrive in 5 minutes, lying. Poorly trained staff. Very attentive door staff and cleaning. Impeccable food, delicious, both for breakfast and dinner. Great gym and swimming pools too. Very nice room.

This was my second stay at the hotel and will probably be my last thanks to the joke that the Houghton Hotel calls a steam room. It may not mean much to some people but the experience completely soured my stay on both occasions.

There is a ridiculous system on the door of the steam room that (when it works) switches on the steam but then switches it off after 30 minutes if the door is not opened again within that time, even though anybody who has ever used a steam room will know that it takes at least an hour for a room of that size to heat up from room temperature. This means that you firstly need to decide over an hour in advance that you would like to use the steam room, then go and open the door to switch it on, and then still make sure you go and open the door again at least once within a small window so that it doesn't switch off, before hoping that nothing else comes up in that time so that you can actually enjoy the fruits of all of that effort (which I couldn't because it stopped working after the second door opening). Hardly a relaxing experience if you have to watch the clock and go up and down between the spa area and your room.

Even more laughably, when I complained to a staff member about this, he opened the door to show me the steam that had filled the room and said that it's clearly working properly even though it was ice cold while we were both standing inside. He seemed to think that everything is fine as long as there is steam so the heat is not actually necessary. Either nobody bothers to inform the staff how a steam room works or this is a narrative pushed to make it seem like everything is in order, which is far from the case.

A number of residents that I met at the time also complained about the same thing and mentioned that the system on the door often doesn't work, which means that you would end up waiting for nothing without realising it. That explained what I experienced during my previous stay when I waited almost an hour only to enter a bone dry room because it wasn't working.

Some of the staff mentioned to me that it was a cost-saving initiative instituted by management a while back that was disguised it as a COVID safety measure. The hotel has since left it this way knowing that very few will go through the rigmarole of what I have mentioned just to enjoy a decent steam bath, meaning that the hotel can appear to offer the service without actually carrying the cost of doing so.

I've never experienced anything like this in a 4-star hotel or even a standard gym, let alone a 5-star establishment that I would expect to prioritise the guest experience over counting pennies.

Dear Joe P We read with concern your comments with regards to your difficulty in operating the steam room. Unfortunately, in South Africa we have government-imposed load shedding whereby our electricity is cut off and The Houghton Hotel is fortunate to have generators to cater for this. This can happen 4 times a day and what you experienced in your steam room was such a switchover whereby the steamer would switch off and then power back. It is not a ridiculous system. Thank you for bringing this to our attention so that we can ensure we communicate to users of this during the load shedding periods. We do apologize that the procedure was not explained and or made clear to you. Please let us know when you next plan to visit and contact me directly, you won't struggle again. On Monday the 31st of January i walked into the hotel and booked and paid gor a room, for my Fiance' and i, i notified Mr. Jabulani at reception that i was getting married on the following day, the 1st of February. I asked for the latest checkout possible, Mr. Jabulani said that 1pm was the latest checkout and there would be an additional charge of R1000 for the late check out, i agreed and paid.

Mr. Jabulani, after registering that we would be newlyweds, offered the "Romantic Turn-down" as compliments from the hotel, i gladly accepted and thought, how thoughtful of the Hotel.

Tuesday evening, around 23:30, we arrived at the hotel, after our Wedding Ceremony and checked into our room which was beautifully decorated for a New Bride and Groom.

This morning, while having breakfast at 11am, by the pool in the hotel, the Hotel Reception called and asked if there was a chance that we could check out earlier than 13:00 as they had new guests arriving. I informed the Hotel Reception to please check their computers, as on Monday the 31st of January, i paid an additional R1000 for a late checkout.

I asked the reception to entertain the New guests that were arriving at one of their pools or complimentary drinks on the hotel.

Shortly after finishing out meal, we returned to our room to pack, at 11:45am.

To our surprise, our access cards had been disabled, so no access to the second floor where our room was.
Luckily one of the RoomService Staff were nearby, and opened our room for us.

I called reception to find out why our cards had been disabled and was informed that the system automatically does this, even though i paid R1000 for a late checkout, the cards are automatically disabled at 10:30am. How convenient, they charge you extra, bit don't bother updating the system that you have a late checkout.

We packed our bags and went down to reception at 12:15pm.
Upon arrival at reception, i asked to speak with the Hotel Manager, Mr. Johan, who left us a note upon checking in, welcoming us to the hotel and wishing us the very best for the future.

The Representative at reception clearly misunderstood me, and called the rooms Manager and not Mr Johan himself. Instead i was told that Mr. Johan, the General Manager of the hotel was in a meeting.
The rooms manager sincerely apologised for the Inconvenience caused, and informed me that the additional R1000 that i paid for late checkout, was actually for the Romantic Turndown.....

Clearly Lack of communication between all staff members there.
Other than the Bell boys, Porters and the Waiters at the Restaurant, the rest of the staff are extremely unprofessional.

Pity, such a beautiful venue, but such Pathetic service!

I am definitely not going back there again.

- Extremely Unsatisfied Guest

We are just checking out from The Houghton Hotel after a little staycation. Check in was quick and easy. All staff have been really friendly and helpful.

The best part of this hotel is the design. Interiors created by the same designers of O&O Le Saint Geran + Jumeirah Al Naseem - you can expect only the best. Rooms are filled with luxurious marble and wood finishes and appointed with everything you need. The design is really unique and practical. I’m usually not a fan of bathrooms that are open to the bedroom but this has been done really carefully and beautifully. The bathroom can easily close off for privacy.

The pool and outdoor area is probably one of the best in South Africa. It feels like an urban resort. Pity the pools are way too cold to swim in though.

The spa is really large and the setting and decor is lovely. However, it’s way overpriced.

So why 4 stars?

I can’t remember the last time I’ve been to a hotel that charges you for additional bottled water in your room. Most 4 star hotels don’t even charge for this nowadays. You have to order additional bottles from room service and be charged a tray charge in addition to the water.

Breakfast was a mess! Service was painfully slow and the offering really limited for in house guests. It feels like ‘breakfast on a budget’ for in house guests. Seems like they are more concerned with outside customers who get to select from a different menu and obviously pay a higher price. It took around 30 mins for us to receive a simple bread basket and plate of fruit. Our teapot was basically hot water from the tap! Breakfast here certainly is not on par with LHW standards.

Hope they can improve this offering.

The place is beautiful without a doubt. There are just some admin issues which I did not quite appreciate. The property (penthouses) are sold on the website quite well but and they certainly meet the standards of how they were sold BUT there was something that was off-putting for me. One pays thousands per night for a penthouse with a “fully integrated” kitchen only to be told that you cannot cook in it??? This was very strange to me and some of the staff dealt with this in a manner I did not appreciate. Things could be done different and it is important that these clauses are mentioned in addition to the descriptions on the website. Because you are selling something and not being fully transparent. It could be worked on a bit better.

I made a 50% deposit on a Presidential Penthouse on the Houghton Hotel website and changed my mind about staying because the booking description showed the penthouse has 4 bedrooms but after communicating with the hotel, I was informed the penthouse I booked only has 2 bedrooms. I was told the description of 4 bedrooms was a “mistake”. So, since there was no process for me to cancel the reservation myself online, I emailed them to cancel my reservation. I received an email back requesting I send them a bank letter or bank confirmation. They had sent me an email showing they received my deposit with a payment reference number, but now they are asking me for a bank letter or bank confirmation to refund my deposit. I called my bank, USAA, and they had never heard of a business asking for either thing. USAA could see the transaction on my card and I had already sent Houghton Hotel a screenshot of that payment detail, but they were not accepting that even though they sent me a payment confirmation. As big and popular as this hotel appears to be
