The gas generator that automatically starts during load shedding is fantastic. All the lights, plugs & internet work. Gas geysers guarentee hot showers and kitchen also runs on gas. Comfy and clean rooms. Large property with beautiful gardens and swimming pool. Delicious food.

Friendly staff, but not the most helpful or informative when providing basic hotel or area information. Hostel is cheap, and that’s what you get. Very basic facilities, not very lively and it’s not safe to leave the hostel by foot. Also, we tried to leave one morning at 5am to head to Krugar but the Hostel has external security doors around the exits and windows which were locked, the release buzzer was also out of order, leaving us effectively locked into the hostel. The fear is that had their been a fire (which was likely given the daisy chained electrics) we would have no escape until the receptionist woke up. Also the only fire extinguisher in site was behind reception...which was also locked closed.

I had a fabulous time staying here - the property is pretty large with a good selection of room types - I was in the glass room and it was stunning to wake up to the light pouring in and seeing planes fly over head. There is a bar and outdoor terrace area where you can buy lunch. You can also pretty arrange dinner. I am vegetarian and was also well catered for. The property is 15mins to the city centre and an Uber was about 60rand. This area felt very safe and more relaxed to stay in than the city center. The staff here are so incredibly friendly too!! The free airport collection is a huge bonus plus free breakfast and wifi. Would 100% stay again and highly recommend to all backpackers.

We only ended up staying one night here due to transport timetables. However, we enjoyed our stay and will stay here for sure next time we are in Johannesburg. It is clean and comfortable and our double room had an ensuite in it. The staff were friendly and helpful to us and were also able to provide us with a lift to the airport for a reasonable price. The backpackers has a lot of character and a relaxed feel about it. They served food and there was also a bar. They seem to offer a lot of tours and also ideas for activities you can do as well as shuttles to places in the area. I have always stayed elsewhere when in Johannesburg but I found this better and would pick it again in the future to stay at and also to organise tours through.
