Was put here as the plane was delayed, filthy hotel and felt very uncomfortable especially after reading other reviews, dreadful place that put myself and my family in a very uncomfortable situation.

Let's face it - going to this hotel is like a kids haircut or using Microsoft Office, its probably not something you pick for yourself. I can't imagine someone deciding to stay here if not part of a corporate conference, tour group or event. So in some ways this review does not really impact their business. That's the problem. This is a massive, sprawling establishment with multiple venues, buffets and hotels of different grades. I stayed here for a week to attend an event and chose the top of the line Silver Birch Hotel which is billed as an award winning 4* hotel. I should have just gone for the cheaper option since the rooms are a solid 3 star motel grade, My room had a noisy generator outside and an even noisier old style AC inside. You can see the maintenance team struggles to keep up & generally its slightly well worn but OK. The breakfasts were ok - quite generous in the traditional hotel buffet style with watery filter coffee or powder based "espresso's and cupuchino's". The fine dining option is the Grill at 120 which is expensive and mediocre - you will get a better steak at a better price at the Spur just outside the gate of the complex. For the rest its public sector conference/mass tourism par excellence with no adjustment to rules and a saussage machine model of customer service. The one time I complained about something the indifferent "eyeroll" by the reception desk was almost audible - just another guest - one of thousands - with an issue. Its well situated close to the international airport and probably one of few conference venues that can accomodate thousands of delegates with ease. It probably makes a lot of money from folks who eat and drink on the company bill and it delivers on volume and scale. Just don't expect any special attention and know you are just another PAX on just another day. I guess the model works but I can imagine more charming places to stay.

I stayed there 2 days at the end of September because my flight was canceled and the airline put us up there. The food was good, the staff was very helpful, and the pool & gym were very nice. The only problem was that at night you could hear some kind of party noise after 00:00. Besides this, everything was cool. 4 out of 5 😀

Depressing overpriced lodge, definitely not 4 star and definitely not a hotel. You are nothing more than a number, a statistic for a monster cash munching business. The worst excuse for a toasted chicken mayonasise sandwich at the breakfast venue. Waitress asked if I would prefer my toasted sandwich with bacon and egg? ! Non existing service at the spa, no one answering phones to make a booking. Telephone broken in bedroom and could only phone reception on outside line, which was not answered either, to query when the wifi, which didn't function for over 3 hours, went off. Dinner in the restaurant was ok, but again, service v average. Depressing, overpriced, never to be repeated.

Stayed in Silverbirch for work conference. Accommodation was good. 2 double beds in each room, even though we were single people. Singles could have been accommodated in smaller room. Room had a tv with most channels, aircon that worked well, as well as a kitchenette with bar fridge. Bathroom had a good size shower, but no bath. I did request to swap to a room with bath, but they said Silverbirch was full. I stayed in the row of 600’s and room was quiet. Colleague stayed in 711 and was bothered by very loud generator noise at night. Due to big generator, we weren’t affected by loadshedding which is a great thing Breakfast was great, full hot and cold buffet and nice selection to choose from. Muffins and croissants were lovely and fresh. Only disappointment was no honey, only syrup with breakfast. Conference lunch was ok. Dinner the first night was in Cloverside and included in DB@B price. Dinner was a total let down. Pap, tasteless sauce, dry boerewors and dry fried chicken, pre fried steak cooked well done only and thin and dry. Spinach was cold and cubed butternut seemed to be cooked in oil and water. Fruit salad for pudding was good, but horrible lumpy custard. If you need more cutlery, that was a challenge. Nothing nice about dinner, except friendly staff. Dinner for conference Gala Event was supposed to be “Gourmet Wraps and Gourmet Baps”, a Mexican Theme. We got hot dog rolls, round rolls, salad toppings and choice of beef burgers or chicken burger, boerewors or Vienna’s. Definitely not “gourmet” and a disappointment for a Gala Event. Conference facilities were excellent and comfortable, and toilets were clean and excellent, no long wait for toilets. All staff, especially reception and golf car drivers, were exceptional. Friendly, efficient and informative. If dinners were better, i would have rated the facilities a lot more as they brought everything down, and after a long day of conference, everyone looks forward to a good dinner.

Attended a weeklong conference at the site. Rooms were comfortable. A friend who used a wheelchair for mobility had an accessible room. The place is very spread out. So be prepared to walk, although staff are also available to transport by cart. Used th exercise room. Did not use pool. I noticed a small chapel on the premises. Conference rooms were generally large, perhaps because of the nature of this particular conference. The food was varied and very good. Halal, Kosher and vegetarian options available for this particular conference.

Nice rotation of dining options.. Favorite was Boma house and surrounding gardens. Don’t count on Golf carts to assist with luggage. Shuttle from airport makes it convenient to stay here. Front desk staff are surely surly if they are older.

Birch wood is located approximately 15 minutes driving distance from OR Tambo. It is a large hotel and very popular for conferences. The hotel had the following pros and cons:- Pros 1. Location close to the airport 2. Sufficient rooms available for large conferences 3. Lovely gardens 4. Rooms were fairly large with two double beds 5. Breakfast had a nice variety with a vegetarian grill for halaal omelettes 6. Comfortable beds Cons 1. Because it’s popular for conferences, it was very noisy with loud music and people coming back to their rooms in the early hours of the morning 2. Room requires an overhaul and the outdated bathrooms requires a revamp 3. Non-smoking room smelt like cigarette smoke 4. Stains on the basin and shower floor were undesirable All in all, it’s okay for a one night stay. However, there are other hotels that are closer to the airport and more modern which would be worthwhile to consider.
