The Hobbit is a gem in Bloemfontein with a languid and comfortable atmosphere and setting. We were welcomed by Thabo who was very helpful as was Keke.

Our peace was somewhat shattered by a family with 4 noisy small children but that was not the fault of the hotel.
Two suggestions:
1. Place a curtain or block the glass above the bedroom door as light streams in very early.
2. Place a fan in the bedrooms as the aircon can be too cold.

I was impressed by the fast and friendly response to my request for details about the hotel. The spacious clean room, spacious bathroom, the peaceful garden, the refreshing pool, and the excellent breakfast omelet were all a confirmation that I struck treasure! The amazing story of Tolkien who was born in the place now bearing the name of his famous novel, added to the delight of a lovely place to stay in Bloemfontein with secure parking and friendly service. Excellent value for money! 3 km from the University, 3 km from Naval Hill Planetarium.

IMPORTANT: We did make a change last-minute (which seemingly resulted in us being allocated the last available room), which might have altered the experience compared to the expectations.

We were greeted by a very friendly lady, who organised our parking inside the perimeter and recommended a really fantastic restaurant for the dinner. The room was not too large, but featured enough storage space. The bed was comfy.
The property itself had a shared lounge, a few books on shelf (which we did make use of in the evening) and a lovely inner garden.
The breakfast was great and we enjoyed the good coffee as well.

Negatives:

The room was getting old (which is fine). However, there was no room to the bathroom and toilet, which was not comfortable when one person was asleep, and another needed to use the loo. That created quite a disturbance. The A/C was barely functioning, which made sleeping at night challenging - I was only able to fall asleep after 2 AM, when the weather outside got cool enough and it was possible to open the window and let some cooler air in. WIFI wasn't really functioning. There was no hairdryer in the room.

What an amazing surprise. My wife and I booked on our way from Plett for a stopover on the way to Durban. We can’t fault the Hobbit. With the history of being the birthplace of JRR Tolkien and the fantastic rooms All named after a Lord of the Rings characters and the charm of the place it really is a perfect stop over or business hotel in Bloem. Amazing with such attentive staff. We will be back

This was a phenomenal experience! The manager Debbie and her staff are so efficient. This is the birthplace of JR Tolkien and it is very special to live in the house where this masterful academic and novelist of Lord of the Rings lived. I would recommend both local and international traveller's to stay in this gem in Bloemfontein, South Africa. I've traveled extensively and this is by far one of the best places I've stayed in. Beautiful homes, stunning vintage furniture, a crystal clear swimming pool and a breakfast to die for. I rate Hobbit Boutique Hotel one the very best you will find in South Africa. Spoil yourself and stay here for a magical experience and an escape from the everyday. It is exceptionally safe.

This is the house where JRR Tolkien was born. It was my first time staying here . Each room has a name from a character out of the book .My room was very spacious , had TV , Fridge , and a huge bed. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Brakefast was amazing . I had an omelette which was probably the best I ever had . This will be my place of choice in Bloemfontein. This is also a National Heritage site . The house displays many pictures and info from the Hobbit books .

Popped down to bloem for the Easter weekend to visit family and decided to book in here to make life a little easier, so The Hobbit hotel got our interest as they were dog friendly. It was a truly lovely stay and very comfortable for us and our 2 dogs. Lovely hosts and so accepting of the dogs. The rooms were well appointed and very neat. Breakfast was good and service was too. Would stay again without question.

It was a real treat staying at this place. We were very impressed with the pleasant, welcoming attitude of the staff. The service was excellent. Loved how beautifully decorated the hotel was and it looked like the hotel was was well looked after.
The pillows weren't the best however it was just personal preference.
Nevertheless, will certainly return.
It is also in a great location where there are lovely restaurants nearby.

Last night we stayed in another super and quaint place in Bloemfontein called The Hobbit Boutique Hotel. It is in the house where J. R. R. Tolkien was born and is a real oasis if you are passing through. In the yard is a magnificent and very interesting garden. The rooms are super comfortable and clean and have all you want. We will definitely stay here when next we pass through Bloemfontein.

PS there is a marvelous restaurant called Casa Bella within walking distance
