I really enjoyed my stay. There is nothing better than a bit of workout after work, so the fact that there is a mini gym, my visit was complete. The natural view of indigenous shrubs and trees is a "yes" for me.

Freezing cold rooms with no working air conditioner or electric blanket. I had to sleep in a tracksuit to stay warm. Bed uncomfortable and no working tv. I’ve stayed here before, but the room felt old and dated now and needs an upgrade. Not sure I would come back.

Very nice place but managed by a very rude and customer unfriendly manager who seem not to understand the importance of customer service. When our breakfast orders were mixed up and our food came late,we were told just to wait because their kitchen is busy!I will never set my foot there.

When one arrives at Altissimo, both the exterior and interior of the main building is impressive – definitely 5 star décor and furniture. The feel is rich and luxurious. Unfortunately this is where the 5 star rating ends.

• The receptionist was rude and arrogant who made us feel that we were intruding and unwelcome. When I looked at other hotel reviews on the internet, this has been reported by several other guests. In addition, not once during our 5 day stay were either my colleague or I warmly greeted or asked if we were enjoying our stay or needed anything.
• We were allocated rooms outside of the man building in the so-called “penthouses”. It looks like rooms were built on top of an old converted barn (not confirmed).
• The stairs leading up to the rooms were not lit at all. Had to use cell phone torch.
• The rooms are separated by dry walling which was not well insulated. This resulted us hearing every movement from neighbours next door, including bowl movements. This resulted in interrupted sleep.
• The bottom floor of the “penthouse” is occupied by permanent tenants. They were having a loud get-together on their patio every night while smoking right underneath my room. Smoke travelled all the way up into my room. Their dog also barked while we were trying to sleep.
• Lighting in room was bad. Especially the bathroom had one down-light only.
• We experienced an extended power outage as a result of a storm during our 4-day stay. They were ill prepared for this. Although the main house was supported by a generator, the “penthouses” were not. Candles were provided, but no matches or lighter. Chargeable torches or at least matches to light candles, I believe should have been a standard in all rooms.
• The air conditioner was too small to cope with the size of the room – also noisy.
• The booking websites offer free Wi-Fi – it does not state that it is available only in the main building.
• Breakfasts were unimaginative.

The booking websites only show pictures of glamorous rooms. Given that the rooms are nicely appointed and that no cost was spared. However, it is when one pulls away the layers you realise that looks can be deceiving. The main house might be 5 star but the penthouses are definitely not. Above all, sleep quality was impaired due to inadequate room facilities as a result of both noisy neighbours, their dog and inadequate sound proofing/dry walling.

Perhaps the main house provides for a better experience but I will not stay at Altissimo again.

Arriving at the gate to the guesthouse, I was confronted by razor wire fencing and security gates that seemed to rise to the sky. A notice on the gate requested visitors to call reception if the gate was closed. Visiting from overseas, it meant an international call just to access the premises, not a good start. My room was up a flight of stairs, meaning I had to haul my baggage (enough for a 2 week visit) up the stairs. The room, however, was beautifully appointed and I would imagine that in summer the views would be lovely. Wi-fi would have been a welcome addition to my stay, but the home-made rusks and hot drink facilities were great. Since I was attending a function in the area, the location was perfect. The function was only about 0.5km from the guest house, which made it very convenient. For visitors who need to be elsewhere, possibly in the CBD, this location could be tricky and the extreme security measures a definite put-off, particularly for overseas visitors.

I travel quite a lot and I have found Altissimo to be amongst the 10 top guesthouses in SA and surely the best in Bloemfontein. I have stayed there since they opened their doors and will continue to enjoy my home away from home experience. C G Petersen.

How far off main road and can we leave early ie at about 6.30?
Answer from Altissimo_Bfn
Bloemfontein, South Africa5 contributions2 helpful votes
It will take about 10/15 minutes depending on traffic to get back on the main road. Guests receive a gate code so the can enter and exit the guesthouse whenever they want. As long as the bill etc. is settled you guys are welcome to leave as early as you want.
