Nestled in a stunning location, Misty Mountain Reserve is often lauded for its clean and comfortable accommodations, complete with thoughtful touches. Many guests enjoy the hotel's array of amenities, including the breathtaking views, although there are occasional mentions of basic issues. The staff's friendliness and efficiency frequently receive commendations, despite some reports of service inconsistencies. While the rooms are generally well-received for their decoration and comfort, a few travelers have raised concerns regarding temperature control and water quality. However, the value proposition has been questioned by guests expecting more for their money.

Misty Mountain Reserve and Resort overlooks an extensive grassy plateau edging a native forest reserve above the Indian Ocean and is reached by an 8km drive over a gravel rural road through pine plantations and lush green fields of dairy farms. There is a main house with reception, dining rooms, bar and patios surrounded by gardens and forest. Paths through the forest lead to large individual cabins with glass wall fronts overlooking the immaculately kept lawns edged by forest hiding a spectacular view of the cliffs down to the Indian Ocean. The staff is extremely helpful and courteous, and the meals and food service were excellent. For us it was a deluxe one-night stay in a beautiful setting that was convenient to the wonders of the Tsitsikama National Park. Our every comfort was seen to in our short stay.
There are several cabins side by side with complete privacy as well as a glass pyramid room hidden in the forest and another hidden suite with a star gazing platform suspended among the tree tops with views of the ocean. The cabins are are large and well-appointed with covered porches, interior sitting areas, and jacuzzi.

My husband and I stayed in The Dome for a couple of nights for our honeymoon and we had the most wonderful time. We had to cancel our original trip due to Covid which the hotel were absolutely wonderful about and refunded us promptly for. The service we received from the moment we arrived to when we left was exceptional. The bed in the dome is incredibly comfy, the seating area and nest are wonderful to sit in and relax. We ordered breakfast to the room one morning and it came promptly at the time we requested and was delicious. We also ordered the brai basket one night to have in our room which was a lovely touch although the meat wasn’t the best quality. The wood fire heated hot tub was fantastic, although you need to give it a little time to cool down before getting in it, as it’s a bit too toasty otherwise! Overall we had a really wonderful stay. Huge thank you to the hotel for a great start to our honeymoon!

What we loved:
1. The staff were incredibly friendly, helpful and efficient. They went out of their way to make us feel welcome and to make sure that we had a lovely stay. There was also a surprise fruity cocktail for everyone to welcome us to the property.
2. The view of the ocean is amazing and the property is beautiful.
3. The bed was very comfy and there was a very nice and big standing heater inside our room which helped to ward off the chill.
4. I loved the extra touch of placing beautiful leaves as decoration on the towels on the bed and in the bathroom and the chocolates left on the bed was a nice extra touch!
5. The spa bath in our room was heavenly and my spouse was in heaven when he used it. I especially loved the fact that a bottle of bubble bath (foam bath) was added to the other toiletries so that one can have a very relaxing bubble bath together with the jet streams in the spa bath. The view from the spa bath towards the back of the property was also amazing!
6. Breakfast was delicious.
7. Great care was taken to make our stay wonderful and we wish that we had time to stay longer than only one night, since it was a pit stop during our tour of the Garden Route.
What could be improved upon:
1. The property couldn't properly cater for our special dietary requirements which were specified in advance and no lactose-free yoghurt was provided at breakfast as requested, for example. We specified that we would've paid extra for this special request and we were assured that our requirements would be met, so breakfast for one of the other guests who travelled with us was disappointing.
2. The property should advertise that they are very isolated and that you should bring your own snacks and drinks along, as you are dependent on ordering food and drinks from the limited menu for lunch and dinner which is available on the property. The menu is sufficient for people who are not fussy eaters, but it does not cater properly for people with special dietary requirements due to health reasons.
3. It is difficult to find the entrance to the property from the N2 highway, since there is no sign for the property. The road towards the property is also very confusing since there are not sufficient signs to indicate where you should go.
Tip:
1. When booking on Booking.com, make absolutely sure of the type of accommodation that you are booking. Don't complain that your room was awful if you did not study your type of accommodation on the website beforehand!

It sounds like your stay had many wonderful highlights, from the breathtaking views to the attentive staff and thoughtful touches in the room. I'm glad to hear that the overall experience was memorable and enjoyable. However, I understand your concerns and suggestions for improvement, especially regarding dietary requirements and the availability of snacks and drinks. Your feedback about the property's isolation and directions is also valuable and will help future guests plan accordingly. Thank you for sharing your tips for booking accommodations, as understanding the room type beforehand is indeed crucial for a satisfying stay. Your detailed feedback is incredibly helpful, and I hope these suggestions will be considered to enhance the experience for future guests. Your insights are valuable and will certainly help improve the overall experience at the property.

Whilst Misty Moutain Reserve is in a prime location we were very dissappointed on many levels. The accomodation was advertised as being 4 star and had a 4/5 star cost attached to it. The staff was friendly however the family cottage was not even 3 star standard. The bathroom towel rail was missing and other fittings were rusted. The accomodation was self catering yet no washing up liquid or dish cloths were provided. The facility runs on borehole water which is not filtered, so the toilets are brown and you cannot drink the water. We were provided with 2 liters of complimentary botteld water for 3 people for 2 nights. We had to buy additional water at an elevated cost. The towels were stained yellow/brown and the cushions on the patio chair were dirty, so you didn't want to sit on them. Food and coffee was expensive.

thank you so much for taking the time to review our property - we are so sorry that you didn't enjoy your experience with us - we pride ourselves on offering top class service and standards. Even though the cottages are self catering our housekeeping team does come in to do a clean up which does include doing the dishes for our guests. This place is great for people who love camping but it's not a luxurious kind of camping - more like the bare essentials kind of camping. My fiancé and I went there to celebrate our engagement, we booked the honeymoon suite and I felt like it was oversold to us.
The place has monkeys so you can't enjoy yourself outside or leave the door open. They use borehole water that isn't filtered and you can't drink it. Their bathroom and some of the appliances are very outdated and some of the pictures they use to advertise don't adequately represent what they actually offer. Lastly, there is no network or Internet service whatsoever in the rooms - if you want that you have to sit in the reception area and the Internet provided is incredibly slow. It was just a big overall let down. The owner also refused to give us a refund when we wanted to leave, he only gave us 25% of what we paid. In my opinion, this place is overpriced for the quality on offer, you are better off driving down an hour or so to Knysna and you will get better value for your money there.

Our reservation was made through booking.com. The professional shots of the venue shows wooden lodges, advertised the room that we had booked with a sea view and swimming pool facilities.

Unfortunately when we booked the accommodation we had not realised that the 'Deluxe Queen Room' we had reserved was in fact a tent with a double bed. A tin roof & tin shower formed part of the facilities. To add to our horror the room was absolutely freezing. A small and inadequate portable fan heater was provided in an attempt to heat up the tent. 2 hot water bottles were provided. When we arrived it was a very cold night & we were reassured by the staff at dinner to not to worry as an electric blanket had been provided in the room. It was only when we got into bed that we realised that a single sized electric blanket had been provided to cover one half of the bed. Very disappointing. We tried to make the best of a very bad situation. However, we were both woken up very early each morning by monkeys running on the Tin roof of our tent and cows mooing in a nearby field.

The food was average. The brown water that supplied the shower and sink to the tent derived from a borehole. The water came out brown and had a strong odour to it.

Despite paying an additional fee for a sea view the tent we were provided only had the view of a field.

There is a small pond on the grounds of the venue that provides a warning sign that this is occupied by a crocodile.

The staff were pleasant enough. Unfortunately, where the venue was of a very poor standard there is only so much they can do.

There was no pool located in the hotel despite being featured in the professional photos. There was however a muddy water feature on the corner of the field. It was not pleasant to look at and did not serve any practical purpose.

Thank you so much for taking the time to review our property and I am so sorry that you did not enjoy your time spent with us. Please note that when you make a booking on bookings.com it shows the photos of the room that you have chosen, and you will be able to see that you have booked a tented lodge. I am sorry for the problem you experienced with the electric blanket - I will pass this onto our Management Team. We do make use of borehole water, but we have recently upgraded our water system so this problem has been sorted out. As previously mentioned, when booking a room online it does show you the information about the rooms and the tented lodges do not have an ocean view. Since we are a nature reserve, we do have our animal friends such ask the monkeys visiting us. Unfortunately, we had to redo our pool due our old pool being damaged by the recent heavy rains that the area experienced and we have moved our pool to our lawn area - we are sorry that this inconvenienced, but we were once again hindered by the heavy rains. We are really sorry that you did not enjoy your experience with us, and we do not want any of our guests to leave feeling that their standards were not met. We really hope to welcome you back in the future. Warm Regards The Misty Team

We stayed in the forest dome.
It is beautiful upon arrival, but the place is full of problems unfortunately.
From a construction point of view, you can notice fairly cheap labour was used. Gaps in panels, shower mixer handle upside down. The shower and toilet area is shared but all the water runs toward the toilet. So once you’ve showered the toilet is always under water.
One big problem is the gas leak. The gas cylinder is directly under the dome and we smelled gas for a long time till we went under the dome and shut off the gas. And it sounded as though management knew about it when we informed them.
The portable AC leaks water and there is a plug right next to it. So we couldn’t use it.
They also need to work on communication. There’s a rope at the top where you enter the dome area, and when it’s up no one is supposed to come down, yet staff continued to come down to us multiple times.
There is a phone in the dome but it doesn’t work.
The wood fire hot tub is a nice idea, but the chimney is too low so when you’re in the tub the smoke is in your eyes the whole time.
They should probably think about a bug light or something, they are everywhere.
The golf cart you get to drive back and forth is a nice touch.

We booked and payed a deposit for a stay during April holidays but had to cancel for Covid restrictions.
We canceled as soon as we went in lockdown and we asked for refund.
After not receiving any feedback we called and the lady on the phone assured us they were going to refund us, which never happened.
We were supposed to go there in December so that we could use the same deposit but then changed plans again.
Asked again for refund and have not got it yet.
It’s been almost one year now and we are very disappointed about lack of follow up.
We understand the difficulty and uncertainty of these times but we still think it’s fair to receive a refund, especially because they always said they would do so.

The Cube is a great private unit with a beautiful view and cool atmosphere but is heavily let down by its facilities.

Day 1.

We travelled from 600kms away very much looking forward to spending some downtime at this special place…

Upon arrival the gas grill/braai was not working. Took maintenance team an hour to try fix and eventually replace. Still one of the elements didn’t work after replacement but I just wanted the maintenance guys out of our hair at that point.

Same evening there was confusion about the restaurant menu regarding “pre-ordering”. No one explained any of this to us upon check-in. This was sorted however and the restaurant was still able to accommodate us. Food was average in general throughout our stay, 3/5.

Day 2. Went for a light hike in the forest after breakfast and returned to the Cube to start running the outside baths; No hot water, barely any pressure, very yellow…. Took 40 mins to fill up and kinda looked like urine, not very enticing.

Maintenance had to come and were in and out again for another hour until I chased them away.

We boiled the kettle and poured into the baths about 6-7 times to get the temps to a comfortable level so we can sit in them for a bit but landed up getting out after 5 minutes. Unfortunately that moment didn’t work out the way we had wanted it. Rinced ourselves in a cold shower with hardly any water coming out.

Loadshedding hit late afternoon and the inverter kicked on after a few minutes but didn’t last the entire 2 hours. It gets very hot inside the Cube so one must run the aircon at all times on hot sunny days. A stronger Inverter is required.

Day 3. Checking out. Couldn’t take a hot shower (or a cold one because the water pressure was pathetic) before driving 600km back to Cape Town.

Called maintenance again. Some long story again. No one actually knows what the problem is.

I voiced my disappointment to management upon checking out at reception and the best they could do was offer a 15% discount off our 2 day stay. I feel this is not enough to show me that they are taking accountability and truly apologize for shattering our expectations. More like a little hush money to say they did. Anyway, it’s been a week and even this refund was never received.

For R6,500 per night I have certain expectations and in the very least the basic ones, like water. Too much time with maintenance fussing about, impeding on our privacy, poor communication from staff and a “shoulder shrug” approach.
