If you ever want a trip of a lifetime, this is a place to add to that list. I stayed 2 nights, and was able to do about 17hrs of Safari rides (4 total) with a fantastic ranger Frans. He knows the property inside \ out and will get you as close as possible to the animals so you feel completely safe. I read a lot various reviews ahead of visiting, and one thing I'll certainly point out, it was no different than other safari's where you are in the middle of no where and the animals roam free in their own ecosystem. I was concerned it may be a bit zoo like, but its completely opposite and real as you are going to get. There are other properties nearby that have that feeling when driving we saw, but not on the Shamwari Reserve. Also just like Kruger, you will see other Shamwari Safari Jeeps driving around time to time, but that is because there are several lodges on the same reserve. I felt that this was helpful, rather than a distraction as other rangers could share where to find the animals. I was also able to see all of the Big 5 plus several others like the White Rhino. The hardest to find is the leopard and cheetah, but Frans did a great job locating both over the 3 days.

The lodge was equally fantastic, its a small exclusive property situated in the hills of the resort with 9 private villas (plunge pool) included. The staff and property didn't miss a beat from the high quality good to every detail from the Nutella hot chocolate returning from safari to making sure you were fully satisfied the entire time.

My only recommendations for fellow travelers is:

1) Bring layers (yes its hot, but it gets very cold in the morning and freezing when the sun goes down on the afternoon rides), they provide wool blankets, but you'll be cold if don't dress correctly.

2) Bring a insect repellent - The rooms don't have nets around the bed or the pool area, so you will see all kinds of crazy bugs and its very hard to sit by the pool without getting lots of bugs on you. They do provide a cream when you arrive, but a spray or candle would be best to enjoy the pool .

3) Bring a high quality camera with at least 300MM zoom lense. I saw several people with just their phones and they missed getting some great photos even though we were close to the animals.

Me and my husband had an utterly amazing experience at Shamwari Eagles Crag.

The wildlife we saw was unforgettable and it was made even better with fabulous accommodation and wonderful staff.

Keenan was a brilliant ranger, putting wildlife experiences into perspective (a bit like a soap opera) but also providing insightful knowledge of the animals. The animal viewing was highly respectful to the animals (no more than two vehicles watching) and the vehicles were comfortable and offered exceptional viewing of the animals (three rows of two seats). We were even lucky enough to have two of our own private drives (we could have easily been moved to a vehicle with other guests).

One of the main reasons we booked Shamwari was for their conservation work and we weren’t disappointed. Trips to both the born free centre and the rehabilitation centre were at no additional cost, and provided a behind the scenes look into the fantastic work happening at the reserve. We also were able to do a bush walk, which provided more insight into the plants of the bush (again this was included in the cost).

The accommodation was exceptional, we were welcomed with open arms. The food was unbelievable in both quantity and quality. Nothing was ever too much trouble and when we had an issue with our hot water in the room it was resolved immediately without hesitation.

The memories we have made will last a lifetime, hopefully we will return one day to make even more!

The culmination of our trip to South Africa was the visit to Eagles Crag and Shamwari. It was to be the high point of what had been an amazing holiday. We were not disappointed. You go to a Game reserve to see the animals and we certainly did that. We were there for three nights and had six game drives each one different and mind-boggling in its own way. Our guide Frans was so knowledgeable and provided for us so many memorable moments and sights. He seemed to know where the best views of all the animals would be. One of the most incredible was to be within a few feet of a pride of lions as they devoured a warthog. Gruesome but incredibly fascinating. The countryside of Shamwari is stunningly beautiful and the drives at sunrise and sunset showed off the area to the best advantage
In addition to all of this the accommodation at Eagles Crag is of the highest possible standard. Each room is self detached with its own private sun deck and plunge pool. The room itself was luxurious and spacious with everything you could possibly want including a well stocked and complimentary mini bar. The staff were fantastic. They were friendly, helpful and attentive. The food was gorgeous and served in beautiful surroundings. It all amounted to what was probably the most incredible three days of our lives. Thank you to everyone at Eagles Crag for making that possible

Just when we think Shamwari couldn’t possibly get better, it does! We stayed at Eagles Crag for three nights and it was wonderful, we were lucky to have Frans as our brilliant Ranger, he tirelessly and patiently answered all of our many questions and took so much time to make our experience an amazing one. We shall definitely return and look forward to it already. Thank you to a wonderful team at Shamwari and Eagles Crag for a holiday we will always treasure.

WOW! Eagles Crag Lodge at Shamwari really has the wow factor.

We stayed for 2 nights and did 4 Game Drives. It was early mornings and late evenings but boy did we have the most amazing lifetime experience. Frans is a fabulous Ranger - very knowledgeable about the reserve and the animals. We saw everything - lions, cheetahs, leopard, elephants, giraffes, rhino, hippo, water buffalo and on and on.

And let's not forget the sundowners on the drives... scenery and sunsets to die for, washed down with a G&T.

Amazing experience all round. The accommodation is contemporary, spacious and sympathetic to the game reserve environment. Fantastic service ethic from all of the staff - really nothing was too much trouble. Food was plentiful and beautifully prepared. We just didn't have enough time to enjoy it all.

Shamwari as a whole is a very impressive operation.

We will definitely return and would have no hesitation in recommending this game reserve to others.

We stayed here for 4 nights at the end of a 12 night visit to South Africa, if I was planning this trip again it would be 12 nights at Shamwari. What an incredible experience I will remember for the rest of my life.

5 star service from the moment we arrived at Eagles Crag and we went straight out on our first game drive. Frans was our ranger who will forever hold a special place in our hearts, he went above and beyond during every game drive and made each one special in their own way. From a sunset glass of wine next to hippos to morning hot chocolates with insane views of Shamwari topping it off with a private day safari with a special lunch in the bush.

Our animal highlights were finding a lion with its 3 month old cub walking along the road bringing my Lion King childhood dreams to life. We also witnessed two amazing elephant sitings at sunset and the early morning - words can’t describe these amazing experiences.

We used the spa for a massage one of the mornings - would highly recommend! Amazing staff and treatments.

The staff at eagles crag were amazing and felt like family during our stay. Massive thanks to Portia, Nolu, Francis & Speedo who we can’t wait to see again in the near future.

Thank you thank you thank you ❤️❤️❤️

The hotel is a dream for those seeking a luxurious and secluded journey.
The reception is warm, and the staff is professional, kind, and helpful. The room is spacious, the bed comfortable, and the view to the reserve stunning. In the fridge, wine, champagne, gin, chips, sweets and treats.

While waiting for the game drive, relax at the private pool, drinking champagne and enjoying the view!

The food at the hotel is sensational! The Chef asks for any dietary restrictions before arrival and cooks the meals as requested.
The attention to detail and level of service provided sets the hotel apart from the rest!

During our 2 day stay, we went out on 4 game drives. At 7 in the morning and then at 4 in the afternoon. Each one lasted approximately 3 to 3 and a half hours.

On the first day, we were lucky to see all the Big 5 except the leopard! Which we saw the next days! I must say that our ranger did an excellent job of spotting them.

The next day, our ranger knew that a cheetah was strolling around after months unseen. We chased the cheetah for over two hours until he found it. And we were able to admire it up close.

This was by far one of the most amazing experiences I ever had. It was surreal spotting these majestic creatures in their natural habitat.

This lodge was among the best we ever stayed at, and we have stayed in many wonderful places!

The accomodation is in separate spacious huts, with plenty of privacy, expansive sun decks with a private plunge pool, and the interiors are luxurious and beautiful, as was the main lodge.

Both the service and food was fantastic! The staff were extremely friendly and attentive. Excellent service at every meal as well as from Kingston behind the bar.

The safari was a highlight with our outstanding ranger Raymond. We have been on several luxury safaris, and have always been happy with our ranger, but Raymond is the best of the lot! We saw lots of animals, and we took us to different parts of the park. He has excellent tracker skills, is very knowledgeable, and very pleasant to be around.

We were sorry to leave and would love to go back. Highly recommended!

The best, most memorable Honeymoon experience we could wish for.

We stayed for 4 nights and had Frans as our ranger. He was hugely knowledgable about all the Animals, their behaviours and got us way closer than we ever thought we'd be! The evening sundowners are an amazing experience where you can enjoy a nice glass of wine out in the Bush. Our 1st night break actually got cut short because we sighted an Elephant!

Eagles Crag is the first 5 star stay where the staff generally felt like one big family. Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner was amazing. We had the best time chatting to Leo, Francis, Kingston and all the team over our meals/drinks.

1 moment stood out in particular when the staff arranged a surprise lunch out in the bush with some bubbles for just my Wife and I. It was just the most incredible moment you could wish for on honeymoon.

We come away from Eagles Crag sad to leave but feeling a part of the Shamwari family.

We stayed for 3 nights at this exceptional game reserve and had the most amazing time. Frans the game ranger was absolutely brilliant, and managed to track all the big five, and made the safari experience both fun and informative. The lodges, food, and service were all wonderful. Shamwari was the highlight of our two week garden route trip from Cape Town, and we had no problem driving to Eagles Crag. I want to say a special thank you to Portia, the manager of Shamwari, who was extremely professional and helpful and nothing was too much trouble. We look forward to returning to this exceptional game reserve.
