Southern Cross is a Colonial style home, tastefully decorated in the colours of sand, sea and sky. Five en-suite bedrooms open onto the verandah and sunny garden courtyard. The views of the bay and Tsitsikamma Mountains from the breakfast patio are magnificent and dolphins, whales and seals often complete the picture. Robberg beach can be reached directly from the house via a boardwalk and its 5 km of unbroken sand offers easy walking and jogging at low tide. The sound of the sea is always with you and in winter, when the Southern Right whales are in the bay, one can sometimes hear them blowing at night – it is a magical sound. The emphasis is on relaxed informality where heart-warming service is provided but not imposed. Your host Susie Ovenstone bring years of experience in the hospitality industry to a more private and intimate setting and they and their staff will do everything they can to ensure that visitors to Southern Cross leave with very pleasant memories.

Detailed Reviews
Keren who handled our reservation was excellent and she earned one of the stars I allocate to this property in this review.
Upon arrival I was wowed by the beautiful garden. The flowers and birds made me feel as if I am entering a tropical paradise.
We stayed in the Deluxe King room. Our room was spacious and had a seating area, a desk, a cupboard and a king size bed.
The room also had a coffee and tea station but no fridge. A communal fridge was available.
The bathroom was spacious and when some maintenance was required during our stay Wendy attended to it immediately.
The rooms face a central courtyard and therefore you need to close the shutters if you want to get dressed. The room can be quite dark once the shutters are closed.
The guest house has various communal areas. A covered patio, a lounge, a breakfast area and the 'sunset nook' with sun loungers facing the ocean. An honesty bar is available. You might get to know some fellow guests while using the communal areas which is always interesting.
Each morning Wendy prepared crepes which I only saw for a second since my husband loved them so much that he stole mine every morning. A hot breakfast is also served to order. The breakfast buffet included blueberry muffins, some cereals, fruit, yogurt and juice - no cheese. The garden setting is lovely.
Other than the garden the highlight when staying at this property is the ability to enjoy beach views from the sun loungers positions at the edge of the garden. Spending time here early in the morning or on windy/cold days when the beach is not an option or at sunset is just fantastic.

Southern Cross was a lovely, relaxed, home away from home. The property is on the beachfront in Plett and very good value for money considering the location. Wendy and Eunice were amazing and breakfasts were a real treat. We were perfectly located for exploring the area and for visiting some of Plett's finest restaurants. I cannot recommend "The Fat Fish" or the restaurant at "Barringtons Craft Brewery" enough. Hiking on Robberg Peninsula (a mere R60 entrance fee without a wild card) should also be a priority when staying in Plett. From the path, we saw 4 great white sharks circling the seal colony below us. Incredible!

Stayed 2 nights, I wish we could have stayed longer. This charming b and bis beautifully laid out, with lovely decor, places to sit and relax. Wendy who runs it is such a kind person who supplied us with info, delicious brekky, and (don’t ask) bin liners when needed. We couldn’t have stayed in a more wonderful place, highly recommend it, you won’t be disappointed. Lastly the view over the beach is magnificent. They could not have done enough for us..

The plantation style house is very tasteful and lovely - and in a fantastic location with a peaceful garden overlooking the bay. Wendy was so warm and welcoming to make sure we were well cared for. Breakfast outside on the veranda over looking the ocean was peaceful and tasty. Our room was elegant and showed the owner's great eye for detail and decor. In short we loved out stay in this small piece of paradise!

Stayed there for 5 nights , scorpion in the room on the first night, no air conditioning, no mini bar, broken safe and a very old toilet that broke. Lack of hospitality, there’s no one around in the afternoon till the next morning. I called the manager to ask for help she didn’t answer and proceeded to tell me the next day that she sleeps at 18.00 pm. Breakfast very basic , food is rationed, one muffin and one croissant per person. The manager Wendy is very condescending, she made a lot of passive aggressive remarks which made me wonder if it was because of the colour of my skin? The dogs were the friendliest. In summary this place is beautiful on the outside but empty inside. Overpriced and definitely doesn’t deserve 4* !

The guesthouse is in a beautiful place with an amazing view. The rooms are spacious and comfortable with good beds. I didnt get the firm pillows I had asked for until the second night though. Sleep quality wasnt great as the sash windows all rattle with wind - every single one of them which could be counteracted. But breakfast was good. Would have been nice to get a good coffee which would have made an enormous difference.

My advice for future visitors: expect the best, but prepare for the worst. My expectations were too high, and so, I was disappointed with this B&B that has so much potential!
No one was on duty when I arrived to check-in just after 5pm. (They'd all gone home)
My room must have been the tiniest, I was cramped.
It felt like a little shoebox, with Zero view.
No wifi access in my room, no 3G either, just on+off Edge. (Not conducive to business travel at all)
There was only a shower, with a broken door & blocked drain.
You could hear all movement in room above you, and when they smoke, it funnels straight into the room.
In the morning, the garden sprayer was aimed straight into my door, and flooded my room, and soaked my laptop bag.
Breakfast only starts at 8:30 (difficult if I have to start work at 8am already)
There were really no special touches that made me happy to be there, or that make me want to return..

From the moment we arrived we were made to feel so welcome at Southern Cross. You really felt like you were a guest in a private home rather than at a guesthouse per se. The rooms were designed in a sophisticated contemporary style (although quite compact) and the living areas were a blend of colonial chic and Cath Kidson boutique. I wasn’t surprised to learn that the owners have an interiors shop of their own in town as they clearly had good taste. There was always a buzz of activity with guests relaxing playing cards or cracking open a bottle of wine or a beer from the kitchen, where you could purchase drinks or help yourself to tea and coffee. The breakfasts were delicious!
The only disappointment was that we couldn't sit on the upstairs balcony to admire the view of Robberg Beach. This is because the owners live upstairs and the guests downstairs; but who can blame them! There is however a lovely garden with views over the Robberg, and there is direct access onto the beach from the garden via a walkway. We enjoyed a morning run along the beach and you can often spot dolphins there. A trip to Robberg Beach Nature Reserve is a must. Thanks to everyone at Southern Cross for a lovely stay.

Lovely position near to the Robberg Peninsula but no sea views and owners living on the top floor. Little privacy because french windows opened on to a courtyard garden. Sweet dog that jumped on your bed, ok, if you like dogs but not good, if you don't! Lovely staff and manager but would not choose to stay there again. Do not swim near the guest house, as there is a strong rip tide and we got caught in it, where there are no lifeguards.
