As our first stop on a tour of Southern Africa, Periwinkle lodge was a peaceful haven in a beautiful location on Robberg beach overlooking the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean. Our large and comfortable room had French doors out to a terrace overlooking the sea where we gazed out to the Robberg peninsula and the Tsitsikamma mountains towering around the bay.
For first time visitors to Africa, “Plett” as it is known felt a lot less like the dark continent and much more like a genteel seaside resort in West Sussex. Except of course for the seals and dolphins playing in the ocean, the sparkling white sand and the tropical sunshine 😎. But falling asleep and waking again to the soothing sounds of the waves lapping on the beach was a simple delight.
Our room in the lodge was spacious and comfortable with a large bathroom that even had under heated floor if required. Breakfast was a delight, served on another terrace overlooking the ocean. A buffet of fresh fruit, yogurt, cheeses and pastries is followed with a range of cooked breakfasts . Full English, omelettes, eggs benedict and French toast - we tried them all and without exception they were delicious!
Apart from relaxing on the beach (surfing is excellent if that’s your thing) the Robberg nature reserve nearby is outstanding. There are three trails that can be taken, with the longest being 10km around the whole peninsula. The first part of the trail goes high above the water looking down onto colonies of fur seals and sea birds. Whales and dolphins and sometimes sharks can also be seen in the water below. Rounding the point you can sit close to the water and watch the seals porpoising around the edge of the rocks. Then the trail becomes a bit of a scramble across the rocks before it heads back to a sheltered cove where you can paddle or break the walk with a quick swim.
You need about four hours to complete the trail which is quite hard going in places so bring your boots and plenty of water. But it’s a beautiful trek and not to be missed.
Lots of good restaurants nearby in Plett. The Fat fish serves great seafood while the lookout is a more casual beach front restaurant serving great burgers and local beer. We also ate at the 1777 restaurant in the rectory hotel which is elegant and refined and serving delicious food.
If you are driving the garden route, make sure to stop in Plett and you cannot find a better place to stay than the Periwinkle lodge.

We stayed in Periwinkle for 4 nights for our honeymoon which they very kindly marked with bottle of sparkling wine and flower petals - a lovely touch. This was our favourite accommodation out of our 3 week stay in SA - beautiful view of sea from balcony and at breakfast, staff very helpful, great location close to beach but about a 30 min walk or more to Plett town which was ok as taxis were available also. Delicious afternoon tea with dessert was available complimentary which was a highlight. Would definitely stay again if ever back in SA.

Periwinkle Lodge is a complete treat. Across the road from Robberg 5 beach, this is the best place to stay in Plett when you want to walk on the beaches, have plenty of swims and enjoy the best views right from your room. The verandah and lounge area provide a beautiful place to enjoy early breakfast, drinks or a complimentary cup of tea and cake. Sunbathing around the plunge pool was the most relaxed we could get in Plett. Very accommodating and friendly staff complete the visit, with Richard being one of the best managers we've met. There are lots of levels so everyone gets a view - if you have 'walking' issues ask for a lower level room. We loved every minute and will be back. Don't hesitate - book!

This was our first stop on our trip along the garden route & vineyards, and what a great start to our trip.
Periwinkle is located just across from the beach, and a short drive from town where there are plenty of great restaurants. It's also conveniently located to walk the Robberg peninsular.
The staff at the lodge were friendly and very helpful, and organised inexpensive taxis for us to eat out each night. Our room was lovely and had a balcony to sit out. Breakfast was delicious with lots of choices.
Recommended.

We must remember these are covid times so we arrived at beautiful periwinkle lodge to be greeted by one of the cooks/cleaner. We were not happy particularly as our previous visit had been so wonderful. However, after contacting Richard the manager he very fairly sorted everything out and we had a lovely four day stay. The staff were welcoming and accommodating
The room and views are stunning and well upkept and we got used to being the only couple in the house
We would come back and hope the travel industry improves and periwinkle runs on full capacity as it so well deserves

This B&B is really excellent, but when we were there there were power outages and we were inconvenienced considerably as guests. No fan, no internet, no back up. We feel a place of this quality should have a generator and not let its customers down, but in all other respects it was first class.
Rosie with magical hands will massage your problems away.
The laundry service is really great compared with other places.

Good Morning, We appreciate your feedback on the Lodge, Unfortunately South Africa is going through a power crisis at this stage,i do apologize for the inconvenience during our "Load Shedding electricity cuts", we are in the process of investing in a generator and also looking into solar systems, in order to keep our guests as happy and comfortable as possible. I am glad that you were happy with the Laundry service and the massage received by Rosie. Thank you for the first class rating, and we hope to welcome you back to the Lodge in the near Future. The staff here are so welcoming, helpful and friendly. The location is fantastic, short walk down onto beautiful swimming beach, views of dolphins from terrace while eating breakfast, and oh! The breakfast is amazing, carefully prepared by lovely ladies. Fantastic fruit and amazing array of delicious choices, I would happily have my breakfast there every day if I could! Our room was lovely, all tasteful, spotlessly clean and spacious. Well done Periwinkle Lodge just right in every way. Thank you and so many fantastic activities so close too. Beautiful Robberg Nation park just minutes away.

We had been looking forward to the wide panoramic sea-views for our last three nights at Periwinkle Guesthouse and were, therefore, initially very disappointed to be given Room 6 on the first floor, below the breakfast area. Unfortunately it was the Easter weekend and Pearson and Brian were very apologetic that they didn’t have any higher floor rooms available to move us into.
To our surprise, the room really grew on us. It was large and spacious and there was hardly any noise either from the little road in front nor from the breakfast/reception area overhead (I had worried about loud conversations and scraping chairs early in the morning). The view of the sea was nice (albeit not panoramic), we could hear the waves crashing all night and contrary to my initial fears, it was actually very private. The entire house is beautiful with many lovely, quirky touches. The pool area is very relaxing even though the water temperature was rather refreshing in March. There are also only four sun loungers but with most guests enjoying the beach rather than the pool, it wasn’t a problem. It actually gets sun until mid-afternoon despite facing east/southeast (the balconies only get morning sun). There was no A/C but a very welcome ceiling fan and lots of cross-draughts to keep us cool.
Breakfast was absolutely excellent and the afternoon cakes were to die for (the Lemon Meringue is in a class of its own!) Brian and Pearson are excellent hosts and couldn’t have been more helpful. All in all, we enjoyed a beautiful, relaxing Easter weekend right down by the Indian Ocean before tackling the long journey home. Would highly recommend this guesthouse!

The Periwinkle Lodge lies in very affluent neighbourhood of Plett across the street from beautiful Robberg beach.
We loved the chic beach style decor, the welcoming staff , the excellent breakfast.
The pool is tiny but still enjoyable.
Plett altogether is by far the best location on the garden route.

What a joy to stay here; beautiful location and a fabulous, stylish property. The breakfast was one of the best we were served along the Cape and the highlight was eating on the terrace whilst the dolphins played out in the ocean in front of us. Wow!
