Our room was outstanding, breakfast on the terrace was lovely and the location is truly memorable - just a shame the dinner we had failed to live up to its pretensions. The chef obviously has high ambitions without the skill to match.
That said, we'd be more than happy to go back and just go for dinner somewhere else in Plett.
The reviews which say that the hotel is tired are accurate. It was clearly designed and refurbished about 10 years ago. As it is all very pale and white the furnishings in both the rooms and the central area are looking grubby, and in some cases are frayed and have holes in them - as the previoous reviewer noted - not particularly what you expect from a five star hotel.
The views however are amazing, and if you want somewhere to relax then this is the place. There is no cellphone reception at all at the hotel, the rooms are huge, and if it is cool you have a living flame fire in your room to cosy up to.
The pool is small and has no views. You also need to bear in mind that you will be nearly 5km from the nearest restaurant - so unless you want to pay for taxis (approx 200 rand round trip.) or drive - then you will be eating at the hotel - and when we were there that could have meant eating on your own one night.
I would not however recommend staying unless you are prepared to upgrade to a seaview room - it is the five star aspect to this hotel - without it the hotel would be seriously overpriced.
1. At 9pm after supper my wife wanted to bath, the water was muddy and there was no hot water in our room. After complaining and suggesting to call the maintenance manager it was said he was unavailable and there was nothing they could do and suggested to move us to another room, we said it was too late in the evening to pack and move.
2. Rooms were not maintained, our shower head was blocked, the shower door was not closing, the bathroom door was jammed, no two pin plug for the hairdryer, the sliding doors where leaking air.
3. Staff where not experienced enough and our service was slow. We asked for some water at breakfast it was brought to us in a measuring jug from the kitchen.
4. Supper was OK but my fillet steak was cold inside. Extremely expensive and we where charged full rates for our small kids. We where not even offered a coffee after our meal.
5 Breakfast was a disaster, fruit juices where carton type full of preservatives, croissants where either burnt of still frozen inside, there was black dirt from the grills or pans in our food, muffins where the only pastries available at breakfast and they where overcooked. The eggs where overcooked. I had to walk into the kitchen to get some service as I wanted some honey. The cold buffet was very limited and not of a five star hotel. There was no Hot chocolate available at the hotel for our kids.
6. The pool was ice cold and not heated, the Jacuzi was out of order, the spa was closed on Sunday and all the woodwork was rundown and needed replacing.
7. The day we checked out I sat with the young manager DD and listed all my complaints to her, she said they where all legitimate and asked what she could do to make thing right. I suggested that she give me a discount off our stay and said she would speak to the admin manager Caroline. On settling our bill I suggested a discount and the response was quite arrogantly no. Caroline said she would speak to her manager and get back to me, obviously she has the same attitude of the staff as I am still waiting.
My advice as a South African to other potential guests is that this is not at all a exclusive five star hotel as advertised, service is bad, hotel is not maintained and it is very expensive for what it is.
My advice to the Hotel is when people complain take them seriously, when your money is good the hotel should also be good.
If this hotel is trying to attract clientele it should behave more like the upmarket establishment it pretends to be.
Pity: we had an excellent lunch here a year ago.
Or you could simply luxuriate in personal service and having all the facilities to yourselves!
OK so it is simply not acceptable that the pool was unusable, but forget that. This is one of the most spectacular and dramatic locations you could try. Starting with showering in a cubicle with glass sides that clings onto a 200 foot cliff, watching crashing seas or a million stars. In fact youre almost that close on the loo...
Excellent food personally cooked by Angie who is a gem. If you want to lose yourself for a couple of days, try Plett Park.
We loved it...
When we arrived in our room, our bags had been delivered and we found an enormous bed, a sitting room area and a huge bathroom with bath and walk in shower. there was a large sea facing balcony complete with a couple of sun beds. The property is arranged in such a way as to provide privacy for guests to enjoy time on their private balcony or terrace.
Kyle and his team are truly amazing and go the extra mile to ensure guests are happy and comfortable at all times. Nothing is too much trouble for any of them. Particular mention to Michael, Ahti and Dee Dee. What to say about food and beverages? I ran out of superlatives, the food at every meal we had was first class in terms of quality and presentation and certainly flavoursome! An extensive wine list, with suggestions as to which wine to choose with different dishes.
Each evening when we returned happily to our room we found our beds turned down and the lovely candles above the fireplace had been lit for us. We had a little jug of fresh milk to use with the coffee machine (a kettle and tea pot were also provided) and this was replenished twice a day.
We cannot recommend this property highly enough, at the appropriate time of the year it is the perfect spot for whale watching. We both had spa treatments in the lovely on-site spa, and we enjoyed browsing in the library. The sun deck is the ideal place to watch the spectacular sunsets and on warm evening you can arrange a candle lit dinner on the deck. Daytime temperatures were a little hot for us to eat lunch outside but there are lots of huge parasols to keep you shaded and lovely spots to lounge with an afternoon cocktail. We left this paradise refreshed and rejuvenated ready to drive up the Coast to our final destination, a game reserve.
Thank you Kyle, congratulations to you and your wonderful team for creating this little slice of heaven on earth!
