Stayed 2 nights at the end of September. Had the corner room on the upper floor, overlooking the ocean. Even our shower had a view.

Our room was outstanding, breakfast on the terrace was lovely and the location is truly memorable - just a shame the dinner we had failed to live up to its pretensions. The chef obviously has high ambitions without the skill to match.

That said, we'd be more than happy to go back and just go for dinner somewhere else in Plett.

We got married and stayed a few nights at Plettenberg Park. It is located just outside Plettenberg. Upon arrival you have to make a call to the main building for them to open the gates for you. The views are spectacular. Our room was nr:210, the honeymoonsuite. Decor is all wood and white linen with african and a bit of asian influence. The is no cellphone reception available at the hotel's location,so your sort of cut off. There is however a regular phone that you can use in your room. We stayed 5 nights and never did the chef discuss our dinner options with us as mentioned on their website. Dinner was magnificent though. Their breakfasts are also very nice. We used the jacuzzi and staff lit candles for us,but we never got any sparkling wine (as mentioned on website). Staff are all very nice and eager to help whenever. The only thing that bothered me once was when we came back from a day of sightseeing and had to call to the main house to open the gates, nobody answered. We were stuck outside the gates for 15 minutes and very tired. We eventually called a farm nearby that also shares that gate and informed them we are hotel guests and nobody is answering the phone.....Another thing about the hotel is that the condition of the furniture is not the best...In the reception area there is a chair where the springs are literally hanging out from underneath it and in the lounge area the chairs have big brown stains and burn marks on them. You have to be 100% blind not to see it. Not very five star. We enjoyed our stay there but would not give this hotel 5 stars. It was highly overpriced for what we actually received. I have stayed in many 5 star places and I feel Plettenberg Park has potential but it needs to pay attention to detail and keep up with promises.

We stayed for three nights at Plettenberg park in February.

The reviews which say that the hotel is tired are accurate. It was clearly designed and refurbished about 10 years ago. As it is all very pale and white the furnishings in both the rooms and the central area are looking grubby, and in some cases are frayed and have holes in them - as the previoous reviewer noted - not particularly what you expect from a five star hotel.

The views however are amazing, and if you want somewhere to relax then this is the place. There is no cellphone reception at all at the hotel, the rooms are huge, and if it is cool you have a living flame fire in your room to cosy up to.

The pool is small and has no views. You also need to bear in mind that you will be nearly 5km from the nearest restaurant - so unless you want to pay for taxis (approx 200 rand round trip.) or drive - then you will be eating at the hotel - and when we were there that could have meant eating on your own one night.

I would not however recommend staying unless you are prepared to upgrade to a seaview room - it is the five star aspect to this hotel - without it the hotel would be seriously overpriced.

We are a South African family of four that stayed there for two nights in September 2012. As all the other ratings the setting of the hotel is perfect. We were extremely disappointed with our stay for the following reasons:
1. At 9pm after supper my wife wanted to bath, the water was muddy and there was no hot water in our room. After complaining and suggesting to call the maintenance manager it was said he was unavailable and there was nothing they could do and suggested to move us to another room, we said it was too late in the evening to pack and move.
2. Rooms were not maintained, our shower head was blocked, the shower door was not closing, the bathroom door was jammed, no two pin plug for the hairdryer, the sliding doors where leaking air.
3. Staff where not experienced enough and our service was slow. We asked for some water at breakfast it was brought to us in a measuring jug from the kitchen.
4. Supper was OK but my fillet steak was cold inside. Extremely expensive and we where charged full rates for our small kids. We where not even offered a coffee after our meal.
5 Breakfast was a disaster, fruit juices where carton type full of preservatives, croissants where either burnt of still frozen inside, there was black dirt from the grills or pans in our food, muffins where the only pastries available at breakfast and they where overcooked. The eggs where overcooked. I had to walk into the kitchen to get some service as I wanted some honey. The cold buffet was very limited and not of a five star hotel. There was no Hot chocolate available at the hotel for our kids.
6. The pool was ice cold and not heated, the Jacuzi was out of order, the spa was closed on Sunday and all the woodwork was rundown and needed replacing.
7. The day we checked out I sat with the young manager DD and listed all my complaints to her, she said they where all legitimate and asked what she could do to make thing right. I suggested that she give me a discount off our stay and said she would speak to the admin manager Caroline. On settling our bill I suggested a discount and the response was quite arrogantly no. Caroline said she would speak to her manager and get back to me, obviously she has the same attitude of the staff as I am still waiting.
My advice as a South African to other potential guests is that this is not at all a exclusive five star hotel as advertised, service is bad, hotel is not maintained and it is very expensive for what it is.
My advice to the Hotel is when people complain take them seriously, when your money is good the hotel should also be good.

Garden Route

I attended a 60th birthday brunch at this hotel and feel sooo! sorry for our birthday girl. I hope that when paying her bill, she made a huge fuss about the unbelievable bad service. The location is amazing and that is why one expect just the best from this so called 5star hotel. But let me come to the horrible point: The Garden Route was experiencing a heat wave - the day was very well overcasted but extremely hot and humid - the tables were set on the deck outside with no shelter from the sun which came on us fearcely in about 45min. after arrival. We had to ask the one male waiter to please pitch the umbrellas which turned out to be an enormous task as some of the umbrellas were not in a good condition. There were only two waitresses for 22 guests - and I have my doubts about their knowledge of waitressing. The menu looked very impressive - but definately to complicated for the waitressing skills, because only a few orders arrived correct. The entre was a buffet table with fruit, yogurt, cold meats, bread and cheese - I think all this was put out at 8:00 for a function that started at 10:00am. The bread was hard, the butter running, cold meat all curled up, etc, etc. etc. We adviced the waiter(don't know if he was the head waiter - but the only male in sight)to move the table in the shade. It was a battle to get the tea that we ordered (good old SA rooibos). I suppose that the Restaurant was nor geared for 22 guests - some of the cups had a round base put in square centre sourcers - try and balance that - icecream spoons with your teacup and ... really no joke... teapots without lids. Some of the orders arrived an hour later than the first orders been brought out with hollandaise source already forming a crust. 5Star hotel?? I think a 2star would have done better. The on-site manageress never showed a face.

Arrived for lunch - explained to receptionist via intercom at the gate that this is what we had come for. Reach the hotel - no one in sight; tried several times to call 'for assistance' on internal phone - no response. Finally, with no apology a waiter arrived and told us that lunch was not possible as 'the chef was preparing dinner'. We left shortly afterwards.

If this hotel is trying to attract clientele it should behave more like the upmarket establishment it pretends to be.

Pity: we had an excellent lunch here a year ago.

This hotels restaurant is amazing. I had high tea here last year and the food quality was great. This experience along with the view compelled me to book for my 21st the following year. I decided I would try the dinner as I enjoy changing things up. The dinner started with cocktails which took 30min to prepare which the waiter did tell us before he took our orders. My family and I then took photo's with the amazing view whilst waiting for our table. The sun had set and we were all ready to eat. The only problem is that the waiter brought us the wrong wine and the food took two hours until it was served. The meal was also definitely not worth the price we paid so therefore I will not be attending this venue for any further events as one bad experience at a five star restaurant can put anybody off. The manager did not speak to us, as if because we weren't staying at the hotel we weren't guests. Overall my experience at this venue has not been five star which for my 21st is quite disappointing.

Evening Jenna, Very disappointing to read your review as you have been here before and thoroughly enjoyed it. This was your birthday, a very special birthday indeed. I take note of all that you have said and I thank you for being honest and open. I understand that you will not visit again from the Dinner experience. I hope that you would give us the opportunity, in the near future, to rectify the Dinner experience you had.

If you want to feel guilty, stay in a 5 star hotel where there are only 2 other guests...who dont even stay for dinner...

Or you could simply luxuriate in personal service and having all the facilities to yourselves!

OK so it is simply not acceptable that the pool was unusable, but forget that. This is one of the most spectacular and dramatic locations you could try. Starting with showering in a cubicle with glass sides that clings onto a 200 foot cliff, watching crashing seas or a million stars. In fact youre almost that close on the loo...

Excellent food personally cooked by Angie who is a gem. If you want to lose yourself for a couple of days, try Plett Park.

We loved it...

I stayed here recently with my daughter. We had spent a hectic New Year in Capetown, followed by several stays in other properties along the wine and garden routes so we arrived at this wonderful hotel exhausted and in need of r and r. We were greeted on our arrival by Kyle the general manager, together with a couple of the hotel butlers with glasses of ice cold delicious home made apple juice. We arrived early so spent a short while relaxing by the pool whilst our room was made ready for us. Not before we had taken in the magnificent view of the Indian Ocean from the beautiful sun deck at the front of the restaurant. Breathtaking!!

When we arrived in our room, our bags had been delivered and we found an enormous bed, a sitting room area and a huge bathroom with bath and walk in shower. there was a large sea facing balcony complete with a couple of sun beds. The property is arranged in such a way as to provide privacy for guests to enjoy time on their private balcony or terrace.

Kyle and his team are truly amazing and go the extra mile to ensure guests are happy and comfortable at all times. Nothing is too much trouble for any of them. Particular mention to Michael, Ahti and Dee Dee. What to say about food and beverages? I ran out of superlatives, the food at every meal we had was first class in terms of quality and presentation and certainly flavoursome! An extensive wine list, with suggestions as to which wine to choose with different dishes.

Each evening when we returned happily to our room we found our beds turned down and the lovely candles above the fireplace had been lit for us. We had a little jug of fresh milk to use with the coffee machine (a kettle and tea pot were also provided) and this was replenished twice a day.

We cannot recommend this property highly enough, at the appropriate time of the year it is the perfect spot for whale watching. We both had spa treatments in the lovely on-site spa, and we enjoyed browsing in the library. The sun deck is the ideal place to watch the spectacular sunsets and on warm evening you can arrange a candle lit dinner on the deck. Daytime temperatures were a little hot for us to eat lunch outside but there are lots of huge parasols to keep you shaded and lovely spots to lounge with an afternoon cocktail. We left this paradise refreshed and rejuvenated ready to drive up the Coast to our final destination, a game reserve.

Thank you Kyle, congratulations to you and your wonderful team for creating this little slice of heaven on earth!

You drive up a long gravel path and know when you arrive you are escaping to paradise. The location is unique, perched above the cliff, overlooking the crashing waves and beach below. I was lucky enough to stay in the Honeymoon Suite, privacy and perfection. The shower is all glass and overlooks the sea, quite unique. The decor is tasteful, the restaurant cozy with a lovely menu and the best was having breakfast on the verandah overlooking the sea as well as having sundowners the previous evening on the deck. Perfect for a romantic getaway. An absolute must if you want to experience a dream holiday. The staff are all most friendly and helpful.
