The main lodge at five-star Kichaka Lodge is constructed in natural stone and thatch which blends seamlessly with the surrounding landscape. The lodge was extensively re-built in 2020. The décor of the new Kichaka is a modern uptake of traditional safari and colonial style and the ambiance created is one of comfortable elegance. There is a sociable cocktail bar and sitting area, opening up onto a viewing deck where there are bar stools facing the waterhole and a counter on which guests can place cameras and binoculars – and of course a cocktail from the bar. There is a stately dining room as well as outdoor dining on the large main deck, and fireside dinners are held in the atmospheric boma on clear evenings. The upstairs library area has been enlarged and provides many cosy corners to relax in. There is a rim-flow swimming pool set on the edge of the main deck, so the water in the pool blurs seamlessly with the waterhole. The architect-designed spa, set above the waterhole, boasts floor-to-ceiling, panoramic windows – enabling guests to peer out at the nearby ‘hippo hollow’ in absolute privacy. Kichaka Lodge also boasts a well-equipped gym. The 10 suites are decorated in the same luxurious style as the main lodge and the finest fittings in the bathrooms are an indulgence, with enormous baths, rain shower heads and “his & hers” basins. Each suite has a private deck with heated plunge pool and an outside shower. The suites have been perfectly positioned to maximise the sense of being in the bush. Kichaka Lodge is situated on Lalibela Game Reserve, a private game reserve in the malaria-free Eastern Cape.

Our first time on safari in Africa, this lodge was recommended by Trailfinders, and it did not disappoint. In fact our 3 night stay here at the end of a fabulous 2 week trip to South Africa was the highlight of our entire holiday. Yes it is undoubtedly expensive but what an experience! The whole team of staff were just a joy and the housekeeping in our room was second to none. Whenever we returned from a game drive or from dinner the room had been refreshed and on our final night when we came back from the game drive we found a wonderful hot bubble bath already prepared with candles lit and champagne on ice - totally unexpected but it shows how they go the extra mile here. Our room was vast, totally private and secluded, beautifully furnished and decorated and we had no problems with wifi in the room (it was less reliable in the main lodge dining area and bar) Lovely not to have TV in the room! It meant we could all gather in the library upstairs to watch South Africa in the rugby World Cup and join in the local celebrations with Spring Bokke shots!
The food is plentiful and it would be impossible to go hungry here unless you were very fussy. There always seemed to be a veggie option. The wines were excellent and we loved the snacks which came out with us on our evening game drives to have with our sundowners.
Of course the main focus is the wildlife and our guide Ruan was absolutely superb. Our first drive was in torrential rain but we persevered under cover of the fleece lined ponchos provided and were rewarded with some great elephant sightings. Every drive after that we saw something different and by the end had ticked off pretty much everything barring leopard which even Ruan had only seen a couple of times in all his years working there. He was so knowledgeable and patient answering all our many questions, and an extremely skilful driver (because of the rains some of the tracks especially off road were tricky to negotiate but we never got stuck - although we had to tow other vehicles out a couple of times!) Best of all he made fabulous gin and tonics each evening when we stopped to view the sunset.
All in all we can't praise Lalibela Kichaka Lodge enough - it is such a special place and if you have to save up for a while to afford it then it's worth living on beans on toast for a while! Wonderful memories which will last a lifetime and that's what your money is buying you.

Dear Gill, Thank you for your wonderful review of Lalibela Game Reserve. We are thrilled to hear that you enjoyed your recent stay at Kichaka Lodge but we are even more thrilled to hear that your stay at Lalibela was the highlight of your trip to South Africa. It is lovely to know that you enjoyed the Rugby World Cup finals and celebrated ''South African style'' with the ''Springbokkie'' shooters. We are incredibly proud to hear that you enjoyed everything during your stay: from the room, to the food, to the small touches to make your stay even more special. This makes us so happy! We couldn't agree more that one cannot put a price tag on a stay at Lalibela. It is an experience worth any amount. We hope to welcome you back to Lalibela in the future. Kind regards, The Lalibela Team

This was our first ever safari and I have to say we were blown away. From the moment you walk in, you are greeted with requests from your private chef and other staff. The rooms were immaculate with a hot tub pool on the balcony, many of which overlook the watering hole, where we saw 2 hippos. Two game drives a day keep things very active with a surprise animal around almost every turn. The food was 5 star and the view from the spa if you get a treatment is wonderful.

What an incredible three days we have had at Kichaka - every need has been taken care of in 6* style.

Let’s start at the reception we received from Jamie and her team, the level of service was top notch and did not dip for one second of our trip. They could not do enough and always with Jamie’s beacon of a smile driving that customer service to a level we have rarely had the pleasure of experiencing. The chef worked hard to make sure our needs were catered for with delicious, well presented and generous meals and even when there were very few residents in the lodge it was clear no corners were cut in catering or service. Jamie - you and your team are stars. We’ll miss the hot towel greetings every time we returned to the lodge.

The lodge, pool, spa, deck, library were wonderful well thought places. From the roaring evening fire, heated plunge pool, infinity pool hanging over the waterhole to the colonial dining room we could have not been more comfortable.

And then the centrepiece. The wonderful Nikita bringing the savannah to life, introducing us knowledgeably to the big 5 ( we saw 4), the ugly 5 and so many beasts varying in scale from termites to elephants! We learnt so much, with so many great life enriching experiences in 3 short days. We had crazy thunderstorms and clear blue skies. Charging elephants, playful birds, dazzling zebras and an awesome tower of giraffes all on a reserve that clearly takes its conservation very seriously and employs rangers who care, know and share in a way well beyond their years. Nikita thank you for making this so special for us - you went the extra mile and it is truly appreciated.

From the moment we arrived until we left the service we received from everyone was impeccable. All the staff were professional, discreet, friendly and very knowledgable and went above and beyond to make our stay so memorable.

The setting for the lodges is within the trees and surrounding bush , so highly camouflaged and the water hole adds to the feeling of actually being in the natural landscape, especially when the hippos returned every morning .
We had a bush facing room where monkeys would greet us and baby deer wonder by, truly wonderful. These rooms were of a very high quality of decor, bedding and facilities, the deep bath was very welcoming after a particularly cold evening drive. Each room has a decent size plunge pool. The servicing of the rooms was so discreet and they even managed to return whist we were having dinner to dim the lights etc.

The highlight of our stay was the 4 game drives led by Nathan. His enthusiasm, knowledge and friendly manner with a sense of humour enabled us to feel safe to enjoy the many animals in their natural setting. We were vey lucky to see a herd of elephants and giraffes at dawn , 2 male and female lions, a cheater , rhinos and so many deer, birds and other animals. This was all down to Nathan’s expertise in tracking and eye for any opportunity gave us experiences that will will never forget.

When you first arrived, we were excited by the location and view of the reserve.
We stayed for 3 nights with 6 game drives( morning and early evening game drives).
The staff were very friendly and helpful.
The meals were never-ending and had good choices and tasted delicious.
The accommodation was mind-blowing with a large king-size bed, large bathroom, and patio with a plunge pool.
The bed was comfortable, and we were woken by the birds in the morning. You do not need an alarm clock for the early morning game drives.
The game drives are the highlight of the stay, and our ranger was very informative and left us with memories that live with us for a lifetime. To see the animals in their own environment is an amazing experience.
We also did a walking game drive, which was not included but was again an amazing experience. You then learn about the small 5.
Overall, I would recommend the Lalibela Lodge for an experience of a lifetime.

The lodge was certainly once great and stately several decades ago, but in our opinion is in urgent need of renovation. The price-performance ratio is by no means suitable, as many small and larger defects are visible and noticeable. The main building is completely smoked, as the open fireplaces seem to be the only heating options. In the accommodations, the cooling/heating units only function to a limited extent, i.e. domestic staff must be consulted here. We could not use our safe because the key was not to be found. The small outdoor pool was first warm then cold again etc. All in all actually a nice place but here would have to be invested again. The staff was very friendly

The stay at the Kichaka Lodge in the Lalibela Game Reserve was simply wonderful. We felt completely at home right from the start, which is of course due in part to the great location and facilities of the lodge, but also much more to the friendly and courteous staff on site, who made the stay unforgettable for us. We lacked nothing, the food was always perfect and very special from breakfast to dinner. There is also a huge selection of drinks and very good wines from South Africa. The daily safari trips were our personal highlight, which was mainly due to our professional guide Ash. He lives this job and was able to captivate and inspire us with his information about the animals and the reserve. We saw many animals, sometimes more often but in different situations, which made the safari very varied and exciting.
Thank you again to everyone, you are great! We will definitely come back.

Oh we absolutely loved Kickaka Lodge from the moment we arrived. Our room was fabulous, with a warm plunge pool. We even loved the board walk to the room, so private and romantic in the evening. We could hear and see the hippos in the watering hole from our room. Amazing! The staff are very friendly and chatty, and always willing to provide you with anything you need.
Our safaris were fabulous, with a guide called Ruan, and he was so knowledgeable and interesting and did his very best to make sure we saw as many animals as possible. The highlight for me was seeing the giraffes walking along with the sunset behind, absolutely incredible. We also saw two cheetahs who had just made a kill!!! The only one of the big 5 we didn't see was a leopard. When you return from a drive you are greeted with a hot cloth morning and evening, and a cocktail in the evening. Lovely food as well! We would really recommend this Lodge, luxury from the minute you arrive and we hope to return again.

We spent 4 nights in this blissful place. The welcome and booking in process was very smooth and reassuring.
We met our guide Nikita who took us from reception to the lodge when we arrived and explained the game drives and overall plan for our stay.
Our lodge was beautiful, very spacious with high quality furnishings and facilities. The large balcony with plunge pool and outdoor shower overlooked a waterhole so we could spot animals at any time.
The service was impeccably warm and friendly, nothing was too much trouble. We were offered food and drinks before and after each game drive as well as the main meals. All the food is excellent and adaptable to specific wishes. We enjoyed a good relationship with the other guests leading to a large group table for dinner on 2 out of our 4 nights.
The game drives guided by the beautiful and enthusiastic Nikita were even better than expected. Views of every animal was carefully managed to avoid disturbance or alteration of natural behaviour. Nikita generously shared her knowledge and passion for these creatures with us.
A fabulous experience highly recommended.

This was my third time at Kichaka Lodge and as always I booked a long therm stay. This time for 12 days.
I can honestly say that I worried a bit how it would be after a 5 years break. No worries, it matched from all points of view. You could easily realize, that the Maintenance Manager did a very good job during the pandemic ; the lodge looks absolutely wonderful.
All the staff around was so friendly, they did their utmost. There is nothing to complain about the food and the wine offered during lunch and diner or whenever you want it throughout the day.
The room itself is beautiful and well maintained. Housekeepig is working at the level you can expect from a 5 star Lodge.
Coming to the Game Drives. They were absolutely stunning. Nathan our guide left no stone unturned to create breathtaking sightings every day. Keep in mind we did 24 game drives!!! The knowledgement of Nathan regarding the animals and their behaviour is more than outstanding. So it was also with the plants and trees around. It was worth every second listening to him.
The landscape of the whole Reseve is so amazing, that it gives you this specially feeling you want to experience being in the African Bush.
So I can only summarize. If you want to see African Wildlife at its best and to stay in luxury accomodation and surroundings than go to Kichaka Lodge; you will never regret your decision.
I am absolutely sure that this stay was not my last time.

Dear Alissa Thank you for your question. Our game viewing vehicles can seat a maximum of 10 guests at a time but that does not mean the vehicle will be full. It all depends on the number of in house guests at a time and the number of vehicles that we have available to send out. We limit our animal sightings to two vehicles at a time. Our overnight rate includes your accommodation, all meals, all local drinks as well as two game drives per night stayed. Lalibela is a private game reserve whereas Gorah Elephant Camp is situated in a National Park so this means your animal sightings will be shared with the public who are doing their own day trips. We offer a private game viewing experience so it is a more personalized experience.
Dear Nicky I trust you are well. Thank you for your question. Our rates include your accommodation, all meals, all local drinks as well as two game drives per day. Spa treatments, exclusive drinks, curio items and staff gratuities are all extra costs. You are welcome to either pay cash or with your credit card (visa or mastercard). I would recommend paying with a card as it is safer than carrying a large amount of cash around.

In our case everything was included which meant all meals, wine and drinks at the bar. Most enjoyable were the sundowner drinks at the end of the afternoon safari whilst watching lions basking in the evening sun.
