The main lodge at five-star Kichaka Lodge is constructed in natural stone and thatch which blends seamlessly with the surrounding landscape. The lodge was extensively re-built in 2020. The décor of the new Kichaka is a modern uptake of traditional safari and colonial style and the ambiance created is one of comfortable elegance. There is a sociable cocktail bar and sitting area, opening up onto a viewing deck where there are bar stools facing the waterhole and a counter on which guests can place cameras and binoculars – and of course a cocktail from the bar. There is a stately dining room as well as outdoor dining on the large main deck, and fireside dinners are held in the atmospheric boma on clear evenings. The upstairs library area has been enlarged and provides many cosy corners to relax in. There is a rim-flow swimming pool set on the edge of the main deck, so the water in the pool blurs seamlessly with the waterhole. The architect-designed spa, set above the waterhole, boasts floor-to-ceiling, panoramic windows – enabling guests to peer out at the nearby ‘hippo hollow’ in absolute privacy. Kichaka Lodge also boasts a well-equipped gym. The 10 suites are decorated in the same luxurious style as the main lodge and the finest fittings in the bathrooms are an indulgence, with enormous baths, rain shower heads and “his & hers” basins. Each suite has a private deck with heated plunge pool and an outside shower. The suites have been perfectly positioned to maximise the sense of being in the bush. Kichaka Lodge is situated on Lalibela Game Reserve, a private game reserve in the malaria-free Eastern Cape.

What an incredible experience at a very special place. We visited as part of our honeymoon and were blown away by the amazing surroundings and the fabulous service. Everything was just perfect from the lodge decor to the delicious food, not to mention the beautiful scenery and wildlife. Our guide, Nikita, was so lovely and knowledgeable, she really made the drives enjoyable and we felt like we learnt a lot from her. On our last night, we returned to our room to find a candlelit bath with champagne and it’s these little extras that make this place really special. We have done safari in other parts of Africa but this is truly a five star experience and we would definitely recommend!

Wow. AMAZING EXPERIENCE. The lodge was true luxury. Absolutely stunning. We had a water facing lodge and we saw a hippo in the water for our whole stay. We even heard him at night :) On out last night housekeeping ran us a bath with candles and champagne for when we returned which was a lovely surprise. The food was Al a Carte. We had high tea before game drives and everything was gorgeous. On our last night we had the whole place to ourselves as the lodge had a turn over o guests. The amazing chef (newly appointed) and the wonderful team made us a traditional Braai outside at the fire pit. (sorry i don't know the traditional name) We couldn't believe how lucky we were. It was truly special. The food was amazing and was in an abundance. The whole experience i will never forget - thank you. On my birthday the made me lovely cake and sang happy birthday to me. As for the game drives. Nathan was amazing, incredible, just wow. His knowledge is boundless. his excitement and love for nature and animals was inspiring. We saw giraffes, cheetah, elephants, zebras, antelope and we were even lucky enough to see a rhino with her calf. That was truly mesmerising. Thank you Nathan. We couldn't of asked for a better guide.

What a special, magical experience being able to see the hippo from your private viewing deck and to hear them in the evenings. It is one of the sounds of Africa that will live with you forever. We are glad to hear that you enjoyed your romantic turndown during your last evening at the lodge and that you were able to enjoy an authentic South African ''braai'' around the ''boma''. We will pass on your wonderful feedback to Nathan and the rest of the Kichaka Team. What a special memory to have of your game drives - a rhino with her calf! Considering we have never done a Game Lodge or anything similar before we asked for the advice of Trailfinders who we have used on several previous occasions and whose opinion we trust. From start to finish the whole experience at Kichaka is first rate. All the lodge staff are extremely friendly and professional without being stuffy in any way. Whilst the on-site facilities are absolutely spot on the highlight of each day are the Game Drives (early morning and early evening). Woody was our guide and what an absolutely top bloke he is. Woody clearly has a genuine passion for all the reserve’s wildlife and is also extremely knowledgeable about insects, birds, the night skies and can mix a cracking Bloody Mary or Gin & Tonic (the Guides will provide whatever refreshment you request). All other guests at Kichaka during our visit were good fun which I know always helps but I think a lot of this is down to the relaxed atmosphere created by the place and the fact that nothing is too much trouble. We did three nights there which I think is probably about the right number but after being extremely hesitant, prior to our arrival, about how we would feel seeing wild animals restricted (whilst the reserve is in a huge area there are still naturally fences around the reserve) it is clear everyone working there has a passion for the animals who roam totally free and to fend for themselves (they do not feed them or monitor locations for easier tracking) and so the reserve is actually doing great conservation work by re-introducing specific animals from other reserves wherever necessary to encourage healthier breeding programmes. Whilst we have had no other Game Drive experience to compare Kichaka with, I am genuinely struggling to see how the experience could be improved. We have totally shifted our opinion from a couple who said we would do this once only to a couple who are now planning when we will next be visiting Kichaka. This is down to the excellent staff at Kichaka and the considerate way the owners have created the lodges and their surroundings so they blend in so seamlessly to their surroundings. First rate experiences that will be remembered for life.

Our first time on safari in Africa, this lodge was recommended by Trailfinders, and it did not disappoint. In fact our 3 night stay here at the end of a fabulous 2 week trip to South Africa was the highlight of our entire holiday. Yes it is undoubtedly expensive but what an experience! The whole team of staff were just a joy and the housekeeping in our room was second to none. Whenever we returned from a game drive or from dinner the room had been refreshed and on our final night when we came back from the game drive we found a wonderful hot bubble bath already prepared with candles lit and champagne on ice - totally unexpected but it shows how they go the extra mile here. Our room was vast, totally private and secluded, beautifully furnished and decorated and we had no problems with wifi in the room (it was less reliable in the main lodge dining area and bar) Lovely not to have TV in the room! It meant we could all gather in the library upstairs to watch South Africa in the rugby World Cup and join in the local celebrations with Spring Bokke shots! The food is plentiful and it would be impossible to go hungry here unless you were very fussy. There always seemed to be a veggie option. The wines were excellent and we loved the snacks which came out with us on our evening game drives to have with our sundowners. Of course the main focus is the wildlife and our guide Ruan was absolutely superb. Our first drive was in torrential rain but we persevered under cover of the fleece lined ponchos provided and were rewarded with some great elephant sightings. Every drive after that we saw something different and by the end had ticked off pretty much everything barring leopard which even Ruan had only seen a couple of times in all his years working there. He was so knowledgeable and patient answering all our many questions, and an extremely skilful driver (because of the rains some of the tracks especially off road were tricky to negotiate but we never got stuck - although we had to tow other vehicles out a couple of times!) Best of all he made fabulous gin and tonics each evening when we stopped to view the sunset. All in all we can't praise Lalibela Kichaka Lodge enough - it is such a special place and if you have to save up for a while to afford it then it's worth living on beans on toast for a while! Wonderful memories which will last a lifetime and that's what your money is buying you.

Dear Gill, Thank you for your wonderful review of Lalibela Game Reserve. We are thrilled to hear that you enjoyed your recent stay at Kichaka Lodge but we are even more thrilled to hear that your stay at Lalibela was the highlight of your trip to South Africa. It is lovely to know that you enjoyed the Rugby World Cup finals and celebrated ''South African style'' with the ''Springbokkie'' shooters. We are incredibly proud to hear that you enjoyed everything during your stay: from the room, to the food, to the small touches to make your stay even more special. This makes us so happy! We couldn't agree more that one cannot put a price tag on a stay at Lalibela. It is an experience worth any amount. We hope to welcome you back to Lalibela in the future. Oh we absolutely loved Kickaka Lodge from the moment we arrived. Our room was fabulous, with a warm plunge pool. We even loved the board walk to the room, so private and romantic in the evening. We could hear and see the hippos in the watering hole from our room. Amazing! The staff are very friendly and chatty, and always willing to provide you with anything you need. Our safaris were fabulous, with a guide called Ruan, and he was so knowledgeable and interesting and did his very best to make sure we saw as many animals as possible. The highlight for me was seeing the giraffes walking along with the sunset behind, absolutely incredible. We also saw two cheetahs who had just made a kill!!! The only one of the big 5 we didn't see was a leopard. When you return from a drive you are greeted with a hot cloth morning and evening, and a cocktail in the evening. Lovely food as well! We would really recommend this Lodge, luxury from the minute you arrive and we hope to return again.

Wow! What more can I say. We came here for 4 nights on our honeymoon in September and honestly couldn’t have had a better experience. The lodge was just stunning. Our room was perhaps the best we have ever stayed in. Furnished beautifully with a huge bed, tea station, sitting area and a massive balcony with a plunge pool, outdoor shower and view of the water hole with the hippos. The bathroom had a huge bath, bathrobes, walk-in shower and a ‘his and hers’ sinks. The room was just everything we had hoped for and more. Then the main lodge was where you were treated like royalty with the best food and service. Special shout out to Nonvoyo and Oli who were both amazing! We were lucky enough to be the only couple there on our first night and felt absolutely spoilt. In total you have 5 meals per day (high tea at 3pm was a particular highlight!) meaning you would never go hungry! Woody, our guide, was just fantastic and we miss him to this day! He was so knowledgeable and just a great guy - we couldn’t have asked for a better guide. The game drives offered everything to us, seeing all the animals that we had hoped to see (including a cheetah kill on our very last drive!). I think what sets Kichaka apart from other places that we have stayed at, are the small things that they do (such as remembering dietary requirements and coming back to a hot towel and a warm fire after a morning or evening drive), that just really make the difference. If you are thinking of going on a safari, do not hesitate to book the Kichaka Lodge at Lalibela. It is truly an unforgettable experience and we can’t wait to hopefully return one day in the future. Thank you.

This lodge was an amazing experience. We came here from PE and it was my family and I’s first experience with safaris. We had an amazing guide Woody and we saw so many animals like elephants, lions, cheetahs, rhinos, etc. The lodge had a beautiful set up and the staff were so welcoming. Only downside was wifi was on and off. Food portions were also very heavy. Overall, great experience would highly recommend.

From the moment you arrive at reception you are greeted with smiles and a very warm welcome. The Lodges are superb as is the main lodge itself . The staff cannot be more friendly and helpful and nothing is too much trouble I cannot single out any individual as everyone player their part. The good is amazing and plentiful great pre drive cakes and biscuits, superb continental breakfast awaits you on your return follows by an a la carte hot breakfast. Not forgetting someone is always waiting with hot towels when you return. The pool area over the watering hole is amazing and then more food for lunch again an a La carte choice. Pre ordered evening meals with you do before the 4 pm drive ensure a high level of service when you choose to take your evening meal . It’s all inclusive with many European spirits included. The drives themselves are spectacular it’s a huge reserve but still has a lovely private feel. It’s certainly not a Kruger park with tarmac roads this is the real thing . Yea we saw lions , Cheetah, Elephants , Rhino , Hippo , wilderbeast,Buffalo and thanks to our great guide Nathan who we had for 3 days we also saw Bugs , Tortoise, bark spiders , snails I have no idea how he saw those whisky driving . He is very knowledgeable but conducts each drive by combining information with humour . This is a reserve and you have to search for the animals but seeing the guides tracking them is much more fun than putting GPS’s on the animals . We also have to mention Nakita who we had a great first day seeing the Lioness’s with a kill and of course let us taste the termites :) I strongly advise this Lodge it really is faultless Many thanks guys we all had such fun :)
