It's well priced, especially if you prefer hotels to bnbs. most of grahamstown is bnbs and sometimes a hotel is better at offering amenities. the staff is friendly and professional. i would give the restaurant a miss, and if you get food elsewhere they will give you cutlery to eat it in your room.

The Graham Hotel is a lovely place to stay, ideally located, beautifully presented, and the attached restaurant makes the whole experience a friendly and satisfying one.
Makhanda is a small town, so you can come and go to your room and the restaurant many times during the day and night without hassle. This makes it feel more like home.

I booked in on 1June and checked out this morning 11June. This was a home away from home as the staff: housekeeping, room service, front desk.... EVERYONE was extremely friendly, helpful and made me feel comfortable and safe. The food was very good, well presented, well everything was just immaculate. I thank each and everyone for my fantastic stay and I sure will come back.

The name captures the essence of the town...
The potholes are everywhere, the donkeys roam the town and outside the town the donkey carts collect wattle poles.
We needed air-conditioning, last week given it was one of the hotter days and decided to lunch here.
We were greeted at the door and shown to our table. Our waiter previously worked for a chain restaurant and took pride in his calling. Our meal was simple, herb focaccia with fresh tomato as an appetiser. My wife had prawns and I choose the pulled pork burger. Excellent! Wine list limited but we found a wine to complement our meal.
Must talk about the choice of music...stunning blues.
What a find.

No alternative for loadshedding. No air during loadshedding. Was perspiring due to no aircon worling. Twice a day for a total of 5 hours. Too much noise at night and No one ensures quiet. You are given 2 sachets of coffee and must purchase from them if you want another one. Couches in the lobby are looking shabby. You don't even want to sit on it.

I stayed here for one night as it was 8pm and I'd been driving all day. In its day (I'd guess the 1970/80s) it was probably a plush place to stay. Now it is clean, but faded. It really has nothing to recommend it, but not a bad place as a one night stop over.
The room was clean and big enough, but there was a smell of cigarettes despite being a non-smoking room.
Breakfast was in the Steers next door and OK.

Pleasant location and a comfortable bed but the good stuff ends there. Dodgy TV, broken tap, windows that don't close. And the shower topped it all - plenty of fungus but no soap dish. Horribly average food.

The Graham Hotel in Grahamstown, Eatern Cape Province, South Africa are still being misrepresented as a Protea Hotel Group on the internet even 2 years after it changed to an ordinary hotel.
The guy on duty at the reception desk clearly was guesing the price of the room for 2 persons sharing. When confronted with the price that is clearly displayed on their website at R475-00, the manager had to be called and was forced to change the price to that which was shown on their website (nearly half of what we were quote). To make matters worse we were then shown to our room in another building accross the road which was not the Graham Hotel but Evelyn Guest House. We were shocked to find that we had to walk to another building. The front enterance was locked and we had to eneter down a side walk and round the back of the guest house. Once inside, the phone range and the guy on reception then said that breakfast was not included. This, after we had paid with the understanding that breakfast was included.
Well, Evelyn Guset House has a 4 star rating while The Grahan Hotel a 3 star rating, but should have been graded as a 1 star. The bath has a big rust mark in the bottom. The shower and basin taps have no indication of Hot or Cold. The hot water is infact scalding hot and could result in serious injury through burning. The toilet seat was broken in two places. The TV was hanging off the wall. Banging upstairs started at 08h30 in the morning, preventing the weary traveller from sleeping in until check-out time of 10h00. The toilet doesnt stop running when flushed. The mattress was so old, I am sure it would be classified as antique.
