I checked in today and I tried looking for other accommodation in East London and the only other place which offers similar accommodation is fully booked so I am stuchk with this pla,ce. The undercover parking area has filthy walls and water is leaking on the floors which I find very irresponsible about the environment for a hotel which is part of such a reputable group.

When we got to the 2bed apartment, the whole place smells of mould and opening all doors and windows hasn't helped. The refrigerator and microwave (which we had to request as it wasnt in the room) are completely outdated. The main bedroom carpert is dirty and the blanket has burnt marks on it. There is no remote control for the very small tv in the lounge.

The curtains are also just way outdated.

It is such a pity that this place is in a such a beautiful location and when you drive past, it looks promising but I will never come here again. I am not looking forward to the next 2 nights at all.

This is a very basic property equivalent to a 2 star hotel. The rooms are comfortable but very basic. No fans or air condition so when it is hot outside, the rooms can get quite stale. Minimal amenities are provided and rooms are serviced daily. If you are on a tight budget, then you will find this place suitable.

Overall, a comfortable stay for the price minded person.

We flew in from CT on Friday the 3rd. Arrived to a very quiet hotel.
1. No offers to help with luggage.
2. We were told that if we wanted to park in the underground parking, we had to pay extra. Why? Surely if you are a guest and paid to stay there, why are you made to pay more for parking!
3. No remote given for gate, neither was there any security, told he will only come at 18h00! So we hooted, repeatedly till someone opened.
4. Very poor signage as to how to open the inter leading door from Garage.
5. The room/apartment was fine. Clean & neat. We stayed in #50
6. The safe was already locked, so we couldn't store anything inside, the lid of the kettle was broken. If you as a hotel have allocated rooms to guests arriving, why did no one go through and check?
7. The the damn noise!!! Whole night of the Friday until 04h00 the morning. My son woke up at 03h00 moaning abut the noise. Ghastly music, or rather lets not call that music! The Saturday night it went on till 06h00 Sunday morning, when our alarm went off to prepare for the trip home. It was AWFUL, no sleep at all! and forget about catching an afternoon nap.... it basically started the afternoon! We didn't bother to ask for new rooms as we already unpacked and shopped for groceries (have a 6yo).
8. The Saturday we went for breakfast and were told we had to pay R145 per person. I'm still trying to figure out what exactly for???
9. There was no more bacon and my husband asked one of the ladies for some.. when she was cooking more, she was basically crapped out by one of the senior staff and asked why she is making more! Really? We are paying a lot of money for a poor breakfast spread and then they want to have an issue with making more bacon available?
10. Lastly again... the issue of having to hoot repeatedly especially at night and wait 10/15 mins for someone to open the gates is just wrong. If the guests are paying for parking, irrespective of the price... at least give them a remote so they can come and go with ease.

Response from 1Frenchy, General Manager at Windsor Cabanas & Courtyard
Responded 07 Aug 2018
Good Afternoon Firstly, thank you for your review, I do appreciate your feedback. Unfortunately I have been on leave, but there was a relief Manager on duty whilst I was away, however I can assure you that I will address these matters immediately. With regards to the luggage assistance, unfortunately we do not have a porter facility. Please note that it is Hotel policy to charge R30 per vehicle per day to park in the underground parking. We charge a further R150 refundable deposit for a remote to the electric gate should a guest wish to hire a remote. We are in the process of changing this system to a keycard system which will alleviate this problem in the future. Security is on duty between 6pm and 6am. The interleading door from the garage into the Hotel is opened by way of your access card which you swipe to open the door the same way in which you open your room door. I will look into the signage and investigate if any changes need to be made. We are very proud of the Buffett Breakfast and the selection which we have to offer at the Windsor Cabanas, so please be assured that I will address this issue with the Chef and the Manager that was on duty on Saturday. I am very happy to see that you did enjoy your apartment and the facilities which we have to offer. The kettle in the apartment has been replaced. Please keep in mind that it is always best to call on the Reception or Manager on Duty and address the issues immediately with them so that they can be rectified whilst you are staying with us, rather than after your departure I apologise for any inconvenience caused during your stay. I look forward to welcoming you back to the Windsor Cabanas again in the future.

This hotel looks good at first glance, but is simply dirty. The carpets were wet, the couch smelled, the beds were dirty and the fridge was mouldy. We complained but the management was unbothered about this hygiene problem.

Do not stay here.

Yikes. In its heyday this must have been a great hotel with a stunning location. Now it's in the midst of a dodgy area, with dirty rooms, no aircon, coffee making facilities in the rooms or decent pillows. Stay far far away and save yourself all sorts of heartache.

Years ago this hotel must have been a real gem. Today it has lost virtually all its splendour. The Garden in the courtyard and the two ladies who try to keep this establishment together are the only positives to share about this place. I stayed in one of the Courtyard apartments. The beds are lumpy, my sheets on moving in was dirty and it was changed after I complained. The furniture in the room would be more fitting as garden furniture than a hotel room. The sliding door to the shower/toilet facility was stuck and I had to use force to get it working. The television dates from the previous century and the image was fuzzy on every channel. The upholstery of the "dressing table" stool was stained with un-known agents of which some looked fairly biological. The ceiling fan has only one speed, but it makes such a racket that it cant be used at night. The windows on the passage side offer perfect opportunities for crime. Opening the back windows you have the noise of a 24 hour service station and a singing pump-attendant. The back windows of the apartments face each other in very close proximity and you can clearly hear all your neighbour's bodily functions when he uses the ablutions. On day 1 a neighbour cleaned dried mud from his shoes in front of his apartment. When I vacated 4 nights later, this dried mud was still gracing the passage. The reception staff are useless and never spoke a word to me during the check-in process. She handed me my room key without a word. I asked her what my room number is. She didn't reply, just pointed to the number on my key holder. I asked her where room 72 is and she said 3rd floor. Well, walking up and down the 3rd floor didn't produce room 72. A staff member reluctantly took me to my room. Which was actually on the first floor, plus another half floor. In the 4 days of my stay, I was not once greeted or welcomed by the receptionists when I returned to the hotel. In fact, none of them would even look up from their computer screen. Every night there would be at least 4 or 5 "people" waiting in the reception area. After asking around it emerged that these people are prostitutes waiting for clients. How can any establishment condone this? The breakfast was average, but the lady doing the fried eggs to order doesn't have a clue what the difference is between a "sunny side up" and "easy over" or well done egg. She has an adequate Flat Top fryer but she can only handle one egg order at a time. Will I go back to this place? Never Ever. Will I recommend this establishment to anybody? Never.

4 young 14 year old WP Waterpolo players sharing a room at the Windsor Cabanas were broken into whilst they were sleeping. 3 cell phones were stolen as well as R500 in Cash. The worst is that access was gained using a key as the room was locked before the girls went to sleep. They called their team manager the next morning who reported the incident to the owner. The owner, Mr Russel Osner, refuses to accept liability. Your safety is at risk staying at this establishment as there are no security camera's and access is only gained through the use of a key.

Well, what can I say...I arrived here for half ironman. The price was average and it was right outside the start of the race and didn't look too shabby. I gave myself a high five, which should of been to the face.

On first contact the staff were'nt really much help at all, everytime I asked a question it seemed a mission to stop typing on their phone and answer me. My room was a disaster. It's a bedroom with an en-suite bathroom with absolutely no airflow let alone air con to keep cool in the humid wather. To cool down I had to sleep with wet towels on my body.

Coming up for a race I expected a small bar fridge I could keep my nutrition cool in and fresh. Unfortunately they did not have in the rooms or apparently anywhere in the hotel. Even though they have a "restaurant". Every question asked was a chore to them.

The room smelt likean old-age home and didn't come accross as clean at all. I wasn't allowed to park my car inside the building so I had to park it outside. The first night my rental was broken into and my battery stolen. I was informed they have security that patrol in the evening, but they obviously had better things to do than watch the guests cars.

The next day after I received my new rental car, I left to go to the shops. Not even 500m up the road I witnessed police chasing a taxi and a full on shootout happened right in front of me.

This is definitely not the safest place to stay in South Africa. That evening I was obviously paranoid about my car being hit again. With such limited parking right in front of the hotel I wanted to park inside. After much begging and pleading they finally allowed me to park inside.

I spoke to a few other guests in the hotel and I heard stories of either them or a friend who's car was also broken into in the same area with belongings stolen.

They offered a full buffet breakfast the morning of the race for R85. It was going to be from 4am sharp. at 4:45am after being chased away 3 times they finally opened. The breakfast was sub-standard.

Stay away from this place if you have any self-respect and would like to live to see another day.

Stayed for two nights. The principle problem was a night club over the road with blaring music that went on until 6am. Had no sleep on either night.
The flat we rented was comfortable although there were a few fittings broken (kettle, toilet paper holder). There was bird droppings all over the patio.
We paid extra for breakfast and parking. The breakfast was a bit steep at R145 for what it was!
No security at the parking so had to stand outside hooting to get someones attention to open up!

Good Day Please note that I have already responded to the review by your spouse posted yesterday. However just to re-itterate - We do encourage our guests to address any matters with Management immediately so that the problems can be rectified whilst you are still on the property rather than to leave it until after your departure. We would have welcomed the opportunity to make the necessary changes to ensure that your stay with us was a comfortable and happy experience. We would have been very happy to move you to another apartment whilst you were still on the property, and we would have immediately replaced or repaired the kettle, as the lid had unclipped. Housekeeping could have been called in to clean the patio after the birds late afternoon "visit". I note that the rate which you paid was an accommodation only rate, hence you would have had to pay extra for your breakfast. Once again, if you were not happy with breakfast, bring the matter to the attention of the Manager on duty in the Restaurant giving her the opportunity to assist you immediately, ensuring that you would have left the Restaurant a happy guest :-) As mentioned in my previous response, we do charge an extra R30 per vehicle per night for the secure underground parking and a refundable deposit for the gate remote. Security are on duty from 6pm until 6am. Once again, I do apologise that you experienced a few slight inconveniences, however please keep in mind for the future, that any issues must be raised with Management immediately in order for you to allow us the opportunity to assist you whilst you are still staying with us. We look forward to welcoming you and your family back to the Windsor Cabanas in the near future. Kind Regards
