I knew the place when the previous owners lived there, a paradise! Now they have crammed so many cabins into a small space it ruins the entire experience. pretentious , overpriced, and over crowded. also she very rude to her neighbors.

This place is what I am always looking for when I travel-Truly Original! Beautiful layout with magnificent design and architecture. Because of this uniqueness there a couple of things you need to know. This place is built into the side of a hill and the walks are step with a fair amount of stairs, but the views make it worth it. They have their own private beach with an attendant which was a nice tough if you wanted a cold cerveza. The restaurant is very good but a little pricey but very good tar tar. Lots of Monkeys and birds around the place. Also I read the bad reviews on this place and after staying here I felt I would have stayed longer if I had not read them. There is some merit to the hot water situation and in most places in Costa Rica Hot water is via Solar and during the rainy season not a lot of sun, so the hot water in most resorts maybe lacking. This is my third trip to Costa Rica and this is one of the best places for the money I have stayed. P.S. Don't feed the Monkeys!

We recently visited Costa Rica for the first time. We rested at the Makanda hotel. We were amazed at the hotel's beauty as soon as we entered the tropical garden.  It really felt like we were transported into a magical place. In an amazingly beautiful office made of glass so that you can see the gorgeous tropical garden around you. I fell in love with this hotel from the very first minute of my stay in it. We settled in private suite with a balcony overlooking the rainforest with singing birds, and a direct view of the Pacific Ocean. The serene and tranquil atmosphere is disturbed only by the singing of birds, the rustle of the foliage of the trees and monkeys of various species running through the trees.  I just found a heavenly place to relax. We spent 4 magical nights at this hotel. The hotel is very clean which is very important now during the pandemic. This hotel is the work of a very talented designer and high-quality architecture with 2 insanely beautiful swimming pools with mesmerizing ocean views. I have traveled a lot around the world and have stayed in many expensive and beautiful hotels. This hotel took first place in my heart. I slept all nights so calmly and woke up to the singing of birds in the forest. This is a real life fairy tale. This hotel has done everything possible and even impossible so that the impressions of Costa Rica remain with us not only the best, but also fabulously magical. I recommend Hotel Makanda as the best hotel in Costa Rica

We stayed at Makanda for 9 luxurious days to celebrate our 18th wedding anniversary and it did not disappoint. My husband and I travel a lot and this was one of the best hotels we've ever stayed at. I know the hotel was booked, yet it never felt crowded, and that's really important to me. We could always find an awesome seat at either pool (there are 2) or at the beach. We never had to wait to be seated to eat, either. I hope they don’t expand and keep it quaint. The pool is quite deep (8 ft) with not much of a shallow end. We brought our own pool floaties and they certainly came in handy. The pool music was really good and not too loud! We both really liked it. It didn’t sound like a night club, so cheers to that! The resort service was impeccable and the staff works hard to ensure you have everything you need, making an effort to know you by name. The pictures do not lie; what you see is what you get. It's just as stunning as the photos. Our room was very modern and had a picturesque ocean view. We could see wildlife in the trees all around us (sloths, monkeys, exotic birds, iguanas, etc.) No need to go on a formal tour, it's all right in front of you at Makanda). They also arranged our COVID test and someone actually come to our room so it was very convenient. They arranged our transportation to and from the resort as well. We can’t wait to go back! Here are some tips to help plan your stay. I comb reviews for similar info and never find it, so here you go: Weather during our July stay: It's the rainy season and it's a "rain" forest, but I couldn't imagine staying during their “summer” season. Being from Southern California, I thought the weather was absolute perfection. We had two evenings of what I would call pouring rain (started around 4 pm) and throughout the rest of the week it would occasionally drizzle for no more than an hour. We didn’t see the sun often, but it was still hot. It doesn't stop you from going in the pool or down to the beach. We never get rain in CA and we really enjoyed the occasional showers. Bring a rain jacket and you can do anything. We walked into town when it was pouring and we were never stuck in our room because of it. Clothes: I totally overpacked! I packed a few fancier dresses and they hung beautifully in my closet. The hotel restaurant is very nice for dinner, but you could dress casual or fancy. The town that's within walking distance is very beach casual and we really liked the local cafes. Definitely take a rain jacket, sandals you can walk in without falling on your face and WATER SHOES if you want to go to the beach. Atmosphere: It's in a beautiful rainforest on a mountain. There is a lot of climbing. Bring sandals you can easily walk in without tripping on your face (as advised above) and water shoes!!! Water shoes are a must! Beach: You can walk down or take a golf cart down (we always walked. Not sure you can get it back up). It's very steep, but my husband and I liked to walk up and down for exercise and it’s beautiful. I'd easily log 100 flights of stairs a day. The beach is very rocky. We LOVED it because we were prepared. If you want to swim in the ocean, BRING WATER SHOES and you'll have a grand time. We saw plenty of people attempt without and it was never pretty. The water is warm and not too rough. There are swinging hammock beds and plenty of lounge chairs. There's always a kind employee at the beach to help with towels, drinks, etc. If you enjoy open water swimming, it’s a great location. Exercise: There is no hotel gym. This was the only con in my opinion, but I heard they are building one. We used MA Fitness down the street for a daily rate of $12. You can also use the resort and surrounding area as your gym because walking around is quite a workout. I’m training for a marathon and ran around the town a bit, but it was so hilly and with the humidity and road traffic, I couldn’t run much further than 4 miles outside, so I’d split my runs between that and the treadmill at MA. Food: There is one restaurant. Breakfast is included and there were plenty of tasty options. We only ate dinner on-site our first night and we really enjoyed it, but we were just in the mood for something more casual. We’d always walk into town or eat a larger lunch. Room: We had a really nice ocean view with the rain forest surrounding. Our room was modern, but standard. We were right next to the salt water pool and I was concerned we’d hear the music, but with our slider closed, we didn’t hear a thing. The bed was also very comfortable. This insomniac almost got 12 hours of sleep the first night. The blackout curtains helped. I heard some rooms don’t have blackout curtains and the sun rises early. Maybe bring a sleep mask. Some people also said they could hear the sounds of the rain forest all night, but we couldn’t hear a thing. The town: It’s about ¾ of a mile to walk into the little town, but it’s almost all uphill and it’s very busy with traffic. You will become quite good a dodging it by the end of your trip. There’s a Thai food place (it was good), sushi, pizza place (I think it was called Lamberto’s and it was phenomenal with stunning views), Emilios and our favorite place was Milagro. They had the best coffee and fresh tuna sandwiches. Everything closes by 9pm, but the sunsets at 6:30pm, so we always tried to be back to the hotel by then. We felt very safe walking around…probably safer than some places near our home, lol! We even walked 3 miles to the farmer’s market. Manuel Antonio: The only excursion we did was to Manuel Antonio. I highly recommend it and if you go, pay for a guide. The guide will point out animals that you will not see on your own. He/she will take binoculars too so you can see clearly. If you want sandy beaches, you will find them on this tour. I just wore workout clothes and my running shoes. You don’t need fancy hiking boots. Most of it is well paved.

The hotel was fantastic - great design, attention to detail, awesome rooms and good food. I never wanted to leave. The hotel sits on a steep hill so the views are incredible and the location is proximate to Manuel Antonio National Park and other activities. They have two pools which are really beautiful, especially at sunset.
