My kids (13 and 10) stayed here for 4 nights and really enjoyed our stay. I purposely chose this for the cabin/rainforest feel and pool for my youngest, along with the chickens roaming the property. We did get to see a few other small creatures while here.

Eugenia (owner) is so kind and welcoming.

The communal kitchen was a lovely spot to make coffee and enjoy the fresh eggs she leaves for use in the morning.

We had a couple days of really strong rain and loved the sound of it on the roof (metal).

The location is nice- within walking distance to several restaurants, laundry, and a market.

While there are tv's in the room, there is not Netflix or similar service. We did use the great wifi for streaming on our laptop.

There is hot water for the showers, which is nice.

If I would add anything it would be that there aren't blankets, only a top sheet on the bed. I know, it's CR! But the weight of having even a thin blanket, not the warmth of having one would be nice.

Do know that a small bit of sound carries from room to room- but I think that's mostly from bathroom windows that are open for ventalation.

Other than that, this is a really great place to stay.

Wonderful stay and great price and value. Someone else said this is “no frills” and they can’t be further from the truth. Our bathroom was huge and our patio had comfy rockers, hammock facing the volcano. Great landscaping that includes cocoa trees and plants for hummingbirds. The pool is a good size and is nicer than even the pictures show and the jacuzzi was nice. The reception, pool/jacuzzi, game area (ping pong, fusball, and billiards area is nicely designed and comfortable- great landscaping and boho relax feel. It was perfect. There’s also a kitchen area and hotel provided complementary coffee and eggs from their chickens. It’s in a great location being between the center and many of the tourist attractions, super short walk to restaurants and shops. As others have said, Eugenia is super attentive and helpful. There is so much to do here during your down time between activities. My kids loved it so much & me too! If you are on a budget and want some bang for your buck stay here.

Spacious, clean room with comfortable beds. Compact bathroom with good shower. Nice porch with comfortable rocking chairs and a view of a beautiful garden with many flowers and plants, birds and butterflies. Good restaurants, a supermarket, laundry service etc. within walking distance (approx. 300 m). The public kitchen (including fresh eggs, coffee and tea) is great for making your own breakfast in the morning. Staff is very helpful, fun, enthusiastic and cheerful! Activities around the volcano are easily accessible (by car) and can be booked on site. Recommended!

Stayed here for 4 nights, it is about 1 mile out of the town centre so is quiet. The grounds are beautiful and the view of the volcano is stunning. We could sit on our terrace in the leather rocking chairs and take in the stunning views! The staff were really helpful, there is a small pool and jacuzzi. There is a kitchen where all the guests cook breakfast and the hotel supplies fresh eggs from their chickens daily. There are lots of restaurants and Sodas in the immediate vicinity and if you want to head into town the Uber’s are minimal cost! We had a great time and really enjoyed the hotel!

We spent 5 nights at this beautiful piece of heaven. The manager Elizabeth was super accommodating and couldn’t have been nicer. Rooms are comfortable, clean and quiet. Price is very reasonable. They have an outdoor kitchen and covered patio area that we took advantage of and used daily. They supplied the eggs from their chickens. There is hot water, a rare luxury in this country. There is a fridge in the unit and the most comfortable rocking chairs for enjoying the view of the volcano on your individual patios. The location is Walking distance to everything. Definitely will stay here again and looking forward to the next trip.

First of all: if you are looking for luxury accommodation in La Fortuna, you have to pay almost twice or more than at the Roca Negra, which is a bit more basic.

The Roca Negra is beautifully laid out with a great tropical garden and we had a fantastic view of the Arenal from our room with a garden terrace. Our room was quite large, very clean, in good condition and the beds were OK. The furnishings are rather rustic and simple, but somehow appropriate. The shower, bathroom and toilet were also fine.

Despite the adjacent main road in the front area of the complex, we had wonderful peace and quiet in our room (No. 10).

The hotel has a small but perfectly adequate and well-maintained pool area with seating and a whirlpool.

There is also a covered area with a table tennis table, table football, etc.

Unfortunately, we cannot rate the breakfast as it was not possible to offer any due to low occupancy.

This wasn't a problem (more of a stroke of luck) because the "Red Frog" Café, which was recommended to us by the very nice and helpful hotel owner, is wonderful and only a few minutes' walk away. Here we were able to enjoy a great breakfast in a nice atmosphere.

Our only criticism (which we didn't find so tragic in this case) is the somewhat chaotic private area next to the reception, which you pass on the way to the pool. A privacy screen would be appropriate here!!

Location: A sanctuary near the heart of La Fortuna! You can walk to town in 20 minutes but there's a supermarket and some good places to eat close to the hotel.

Hotel: Great value for what you get, considering Costa Rica isn't all that cheap. The grounds are full of lush, beautiful greenery and flowers, attracting many species of exotic birds. The pool area is truly lovely, with a direct view of Arenal Volcano (when it isn't being hidden behind clouds) and there's a jacuzzi if you don't feel like making another trip out to the hot springs. Since it's a gated compound, it was safe for my 4-year-old to explore the hotel grounds on her own and she loved paying visits to the resident chickens, geese, peacock and rabbit. Instead of serving breakfast, they have a communal kitchen where you can make your own meals but they provide complimentary coffee, tea and fresh eggs courtesy of the onsite hens every morning.

Rooms: Rooms were pretty basic but clean, comfortable and quiet. We loved watching the hummingbirds from the private patio with a hammock and rocking chairs. No problems with Wifi, bed and shower were great. Just wished they labeled the toiletries though!

Service: Warm and friendly, especially Elizabeth who really seemed to have a passion for her job!

This little gem showed better than in photos! We had an upgraded cabin which was modern, clean and comfortable.

The gardens surrounding our cabin (& entire grounds) were lush and provided privacy. The pool area was spotless and we enjoyed the games area in the evening.

This is a self-catering establishment so no restaurant or bar to serve you but a nicely equipped common kitchen should you want to use it. Within walking distance to restaurants.

The service was welcoming and attentive. So glad we chose this beautiful little family run inn while we enjoyed the La Fortuna area. The location is also central to all the sights.

The rooms are modern and comfortable (although a bit small). The surrounding gardens are beautiful and the patios of all the rooms face the Arenal volcano. Ready to relax? Not so fast, there are a few chores you have to attend to up front. First, you must go to the ATM and withdraw gobs of cash because this hotel doesn’t accept credit cards. Next you must go to the grocery store because Roca Negra doesn’t provide breakfast (other than coffee and a few eggs harvested from their resident chickens) and you otherwise have to drive to go anywhere. Should be a five star review but Roca Negra hit both of my pet peeves.

there is no shuttle. There is no bar on site. But if I go back to arenal area, I would come back to this hotel. Rooms are clean, beautiful gardens and wildlife, friendly staff. Restaurants are right across the street.

I think there were 8 rooms at la Roca Negra. They were each detached cabinas with a little porch and garden. The hotel is not in the town, it is up the little highway. You can walk to a restaurant but it is a few blocks. We had a rental car and we drove into the downtown for dinner, and one night we ate at Baldi, the huge fancy hotsprings resort. We drove there from San Jose. Beautiful drive! Not far. I think Liberia airport is about the same distance. By the way, Liberia airport looked easier to navigate, much less crowded and more oriented to tourists than San Jose. But I would inquire somewhere else about travel from Liberia to La Fortuna. Have a nice trip, Costa Rica is a lovely country!
