The garden is impressive and you can see the volcano from the rooms. Super nice hostess Eugenia
Quiet and close from the city center by car (2km)
you can walk to a mini supermarket and restaurants as well
Eugenia (owner) is so kind and welcoming.
The communal kitchen was a lovely spot to make coffee and enjoy the fresh eggs she leaves for use in the morning.
We had a couple days of really strong rain and loved the sound of it on the roof (metal).
The location is nice- within walking distance to several restaurants, laundry, and a market.
While there are tv's in the room, there is not Netflix or similar service. We did use the great wifi for streaming on our laptop.
There is hot water for the showers, which is nice.
If I would add anything it would be that there aren't blankets, only a top sheet on the bed. I know, it's CR! But the weight of having even a thin blanket, not the warmth of having one would be nice.
Do know that a small bit of sound carries from room to room- but I think that's mostly from bathroom windows that are open for ventalation.
Other than that, this is a really great place to stay.
The Roca Negra is beautifully laid out with a great tropical garden and we had a fantastic view of the Arenal from our room with a garden terrace. Our room was quite large, very clean, in good condition and the beds were OK. The furnishings are rather rustic and simple, but somehow appropriate. The shower, bathroom and toilet were also fine.
Despite the adjacent main road in the front area of the complex, we had wonderful peace and quiet in our room (No. 10).
The hotel has a small but perfectly adequate and well-maintained pool area with seating and a whirlpool.
There is also a covered area with a table tennis table, table football, etc.
Unfortunately, we cannot rate the breakfast as it was not possible to offer any due to low occupancy.
This wasn't a problem (more of a stroke of luck) because the "Red Frog" Café, which was recommended to us by the very nice and helpful hotel owner, is wonderful and only a few minutes' walk away. Here we were able to enjoy a great breakfast in a nice atmosphere.
Our only criticism (which we didn't find so tragic in this case) is the somewhat chaotic private area next to the reception, which you pass on the way to the pool. A privacy screen would be appropriate here!!
Hotel: Great value for what you get, considering Costa Rica isn't all that cheap. The grounds are full of lush, beautiful greenery and flowers, attracting many species of exotic birds. The pool area is truly lovely, with a direct view of Arenal Volcano (when it isn't being hidden behind clouds) and there's a jacuzzi if you don't feel like making another trip out to the hot springs. Since it's a gated compound, it was safe for my 4-year-old to explore the hotel grounds on her own and she loved paying visits to the resident chickens, geese, peacock and rabbit. Instead of serving breakfast, they have a communal kitchen where you can make your own meals but they provide complimentary coffee, tea and fresh eggs courtesy of the onsite hens every morning.
Rooms: Rooms were pretty basic but clean, comfortable and quiet. We loved watching the hummingbirds from the private patio with a hammock and rocking chairs. No problems with Wifi, bed and shower were great. Just wished they labeled the toiletries though!
Service: Warm and friendly, especially Elizabeth who really seemed to have a passion for her job!
The gardens surrounding our cabin (& entire grounds) were lush and provided privacy. The pool area was spotless and we enjoyed the games area in the evening.
This is a self-catering establishment so no restaurant or bar to serve you but a nicely equipped common kitchen should you want to use it. Within walking distance to restaurants.
The service was welcoming and attentive. So glad we chose this beautiful little family run inn while we enjoyed the La Fortuna area. The location is also central to all the sights.
"We walked to have lunch/dinner and ice. easy walk never felt unsafe. To go further we chose Uber and it worked out great! Cheaper and nicer"Read full review
"If no car…Ubers are so cheap! A ride to a restaurant in town is about $2-3! No hassle! "Read full review
